Shame they didn't allow for the camera to zoom out at an angle, to allow a better field of view of the surroundings. Being directly overhead is often more awkward than helpful.

But you can? You can move the camera around any way you want in tactical view. Mike Laidlaw demonstrates this in the first PC UI twitch stream he did. You can even make it the same-looking camera angle as 3rd person, except it plays more point-and-click in tactical view.

But I think it is worthwhile to note - as you did - it won't play exactly like Infinity Engine games in tactical view.

This weekend will be grueling...at least I have the Master Chief Collection and Sunset Overdrive to keep me occupied.

I have 10 parcels making there way to me for dragon age

8 of them include key components for my New PC.

If just one fails to arrive in the next week... Grrr

Yep. I am almost done Halo 1. Sunset is sitting at ~2/3 done

Once I jump on the DA train...I am not getting off for months. (Maybe get 3 runs in and then the Witcher)

I'm not even reading the reviews, they're usually a bit too spoilery. But looked at the scores and they seem mostly excellent. Can't wait to get stuck in. The sequel we've been waiting for since Origins, which was way back in 2009.

And crazy to think that there's another sprawling, epic fantasy rpg coming in February with the Witcher 3. I can't even imagine how many hours I'll be pouring into these two games.

So gamespot says the combat is weak and the story is great. IGN says the combat is great and the story is weak. From what I have seen of the game I am leaning with gamespot on this one. Really cool to see reviews out so early.

Why you already get 3 games on pc including DA:O, which they'll almost certainly drop if they introduced access.

I'll never understand why people are in a hurry to pay a monthly fee,

In principal I have no interest in what it offers. Except for DA: I early. Hype train and all that.

Well looking at videos the gameplay looks fun. Maybe by weak he means not making much use of strategy as it could have. I usually trust KVO's reviews. He seems to share much of my tastes and opinions.
I just watched GiantBomb's quick look and they seem to be saying the story is fairly weak.

Gaf, I can safely say that I've been Dragon Aged. I'm absolutely tired of shooters and it's been a while since I don't play an RPG. After watching some walkthroughs I have to say that this game looks phenomenal. Open-world where solo means go along with your party? I'm in! Mini games? Hell yeah! Switch from hack'n slash-like game to tactical? Count me in!

Any videos worth watching? I'm still deciding if I should go rogue or mage... In the end I guess it doesn't matter too much.

Go mage and get knight enchanter specialization! :D
It looks super amazing to play!

So IS the tactical option an afterthought?

Also, I feel like finishing Origins, but I sold my PS3 copy and missed out on the free PC version! :(

I miss the combat and just want to have some fun with the origin stories. I presume this game doesn't start out like Origins did, which by the way was such an awesome idea. Hope more RPGs do that one day

Yeah, I'm sure both played on Normal though.

Sorry if it's already been discussed earlier in the thread, but does anybody know how the retail PS4 version holds up in terms of resolution/framerate - i.e fixed resolution versus dynamic & stable FPS? Thank you in advance

Hi Gaf,

I desperately want to play this game, but i need to know. Do i necessarily have to play Origins and its expansions (and part 2) in order to jump in? I ask because i do not have a powerful PC currently, and i only have a PS4/Xbox One so i cant play the old games on consoles either.

Would DA: Origins run properly on a Surface Pro 1? Is it even worth playing on such a small screen or can i just jump straight into Inquisition?

I think both are great. The combat isn't as heavy on strategy as, say, Baldur's Gate II, but tactical mode is designed really well (despite some jankiness) and it's really fun to use. And the story, like most good stories, is more about smaller threads and character interactions than it is about some big epic twisting narrative.

Hey, may I ask you a pretty odd question? :D
Currently trying to finish DA2 and I hate the boss design in this game! Most of the time I don't even get to fight they damage sponge boss because it runs away and summons minions I have to fight instead. Is DA:I plagued by this kind of fights too?

We don't have an actual analysis. But we know it's 1080p and 30 FPS. And reviewers have said that's a mostly stable 30 FPS except when in areas with lots of NPC's.

I agree with Jason. I think this game has some of the best BioWare character interactions in a while. I feel like there are more, interesting personal quests and the romance quest has been changed a little too. The main story might not be earth shattering, but it's decent enough. Combined with the "world story" and sidecontent, there's a lot of good stuff.

Also, I really like Iron Bull.

You can just jump into Inquisition.

Here's how I'm interpreting Kotaku's warning about starting with this game: Dragon Age's lore is WAY more detailed than Mass Effect's (it has to be, as it's a fantasy world instead of our-world-in-the-future). So in Mass Effect someone mentions London and you're like, "Oh ok, it's London in the future." Someone mentions the Black City and you're like, "Wait, what's that? Oh it's this place in the Fade? What's the Fade? Wait it used to be the Golden City? What happened?" I am confident, however, that the LORE will be adequately explained in the codex and dialogue investigate options.

So really, I think if you're willing to comb through the codex for Inquisition you won't be lost, lore-wise. Where Inquisition might come up short is explaining the events and characters of Dragon Age 1 and 2. For that purpose Shinobi is including summaries in the OT, and for that purpose the reading you might want to do is in the Dragon Age Wiki summaries for each game.

My advice is to read the codex in Inquisition and just play through. If you love the world enough, go back and play through the first two games, then play through Inquisition again with your enriched timeline knowledge.

This is all I wanted to hear. If the characters are good then we are fucking set. Mass Effect 2 has one of the weakest plots for an RPG in recent memory and people loved that story because of the BioWare characters.

That's not an odd question at all!

There are some bosses that shield up and jump to an unreachable ledge or whatever while summoning minions. Not every boss does this, but there are some that do. Dragons also tend to shield up A LOT and they WILL summon small wyrms to assist them.

Draogn Age Origins is an excellent RPG, you should definitley give it a go, and yes, it will run ona surface pro.

Chek out this website for compatibel games:

You don't NEED to play ti before playign this game. You'll fele lost at first, but as you play inquisition (this is based on reviews so far) the game will continue to get you immersed in the lore.

It's certinaly nice to have the context and world building DA:O provides though. So not necessary, but would definitely recommend.

This just answered my question lol.

I'm really looking forward to my cohorts chatting between themselves, man I love that in BioWare games. Makes me smile.

Honestly the Dragon Age keep seems to be a decent way to catch up on the story. You'll have to make a bunch of random choices on things you have no clue about, but once you do you can play a video to get a summary of the story narrated by Varric. It's not a perfect solution but it's quicker/easier than playing the first two games (although I really do recommend at least DA:O since it's a really good game).

Ah, nice one. Think that just about settles it then; I shall be a Dragon Age virgin no more :)

Thanks, that is good to hear. I suspected that story wise but a few reviews had me concerned.

Varric and Cassandra should be golden.

Less random/you'll have more of a clue if you use this:

Origin store says you can preload the PC version of Inquisition. I assume it's not active yet? (because I can't seem to figure out how to get mine to do it)
