Dragon Age: Inquisition Review Thread

Quick question.

Is the story continuous with the previous of Dragon Age games? Thinking of getting this on PS4 after hearing so many good things but have missed out on the first games.

p.s. Also, is there an official thread for the game? Can't find it.

No, the world is continuous but the main plot is relatively self-contained.

Think of it like Suikoden if you've played those games. Suikoden III's story is self-contained but playing the previous two gives you a deeper understanding and appreciation for the plot
since the main villain is a character in the first two games

Its an isolated story. Earlier games set up the world state of the isolated story, and there are returning characters for some cases (that I'm sure they'll reintroduce to new players).

has anyone found any information on the rogue tempest tree? I have looked everywhere and can't find any screen grabs or information.

Each companion has 1 specialization (Iron Bull is a Reaver, Solas is a Rift Mage, etc.)

Do we have a list?

Iron Bull - Reaver
Solas - Rift Mage
Varric - Artificer
Cassandra - Templar (?)
Blackwall - Champion (?)
Dorian - Necromancer (?)
Sera - Tempest (?)
Vivienne - Knight Enchanter (?)
Cole - Assassin

Less than a week to go, and my dilemma is simple: do I bide my time re-familiarizing myself with the events of Dragon Age II? Or try out some of the Origins DLC? I just finished re-playing Origins and can't imagine putting it all aside just yet.

Shouldn't the OT go up tomorrow since a lot of people are going to be able to play the game via EA access?

I consider EAA as basically just demo and not full release so putting OT out would be against new rules, imo. But it does raise interesting question. Is new OT rules slightly flawed when things like EAA x hour "demos" and Day 0 Editions are more than likely to become common occurrence? These are basically soft launches while official release date is still day out.

That all said EAA is to get its own discussion thread, yet another unofficial DAI OT, as official OT is to launch next Monday.

Granted I've been following this thread closer than I follow most, but, the amount of converts is staggering. It pleases me. You're welcome, EA.

The only ones not confirmed are Sera, Blackwell, and Casandra as far as I know. Dorian has been confirmed to be a necromancer and Vivienne has been confirmed to be a Knight Enchanter.

The second picture is no illusion. It seems that there are only 4 rows of Tactics to set for the ai characters. Unless Giant Bomb didn't unlock more, or didn't really scroll down when it sounded like they did.

Edit: The awesome Dragon Age II tactics tree.

For anyone who has played the game or read the reviews more carefully than I have, are there are pause options? e.g pause when enemy has been sighted, pause when somebody has been killed

That pretty much confirms everyone then. I thought there was one of each in the party. Only one Rogue slot left, and Blackwall I assume won't be a templar being that he's a grey warden.

I'm not seeing a big problem here. Unless targeting behavior is limited and doesn't allow for things like group of [x] or more, attacking ally, weakest, strongest, most hp, hasn't been hit or something of the like.

You had to unlock slots in the first two, so, hopefully that's the case here. I would be shocked if it weren't given their recommitting to micromanaging and being tactical

Quick question: I see the double dagger tree has a parry. Do you have to time it or does your char just wait in a parry stance until the next blow hits?

Yes, it was already known that tactics were downgraded for Inquisition. Such a shame.

Would be a great mod to work on :( if frostbite wasn't as mod unfriendly.

Hmm, doesn't sound too exciting to me. I think I'll stick to Knight Enchanter.

Yeah it's pretty much Entropy tree from Dragon Age Origins, and I was never a fan of it. I especially don't like Walking Bomb since I play with friendly fire on. Hard to set up to make it worth the skill points.

I actually like the idea of limiting it. 4 is more than enough to take over buff work or to trigger emergency talents. I like that you have to do stuff yourself.

Seems like the game I was least expecting to be good this month (Inquistion) is going to be better than the two games I thought were on a be amazing (Unity, MCC). Getting real hyped for this

Reading this thread and the reviews has put me in favour of getting the game, but I've not played the other entries in the series.

I had a similar experience with Mass Effect 2, though I wasn't left in the dark because ME2 had the interactive comic book intro to welcome me to the series and also let me fiddle with the carry-over decisions that would affect the game. Does DA:I have something similar?

I noticed that in the class selection screen at the begining of the game they've split up classes by weapon specialization.

What does that mean exactly? If I pick rogue with bow, I can't use dagger at all??

Nope I think it basically dictates what weapon you start out with. Does not lock you out of other Rogue skills.

60 FPS matters in ALL games. There is more temporal information. Things look sharper, more detailed...

Only for movement. Can you say with a straight face that 60fps over 30 means anything for Europa Universallies? Civilization? Final Fantasy? I doubt anyone could even tell the difference if you frame capped it but didn't tell them.

DA is a bit more kinetic than those games, so I'd say fps isn't meaningless in this case, but it is pretty far down on the list of things while considering which version to purchase. Just imo, of course.

What have we seen from the multiplayer? I know that everyone has said the single player is fantastic, but does the multiplayer have any real value? :o Definitely the part I'm most curious about.

The warrior talents sound pretty underwhelming all around, while Knight Enchanter's first talent already sounds pretty devastating. Dunno how it'll work out being mana-bound then tho. I usually play a Warrior-archtype in games like this, with a Spear / Halberd or Greatsword, or can you be a Knight Enchanter and still get the Warrior skills that cost stamina?

Nope.

Bioware streamed DAI Multiplayer last week.
Pretty much ME3's multiplayer but dungeon crawling instead of hordes of enemies; has crafting and pretty much what'd you expect if you played ME3's MP.
Also, only 2 of a potion (maximum of 4) can be taken out into the field and of course no healing so everything is a lot harder.

From what I've seen (there's a Bioware stream on Twitch from a couple days ago), it's a horde-mode thing, kinda like ME3's MP. You pick from pre-made characters of varying classes, and you can level and improve them as you play.

Just checked my local store list and looks like I'll be picking up DA:I at midnight at the Best Buy in Culver City. Any other gaffers venturing out for it at midnight?

Reaver Warrior sounds pretty great honestly, especially with no regenerating health. Knight Enchanter is mage spec so you can't get any actual warrior abilities.

IMO, no. Each DA game is its own self-contained story - just set within the same setting/universe.

There is of course the awesome Dragon Age: Keep to help fill in the really detailed lore, but I've found the main things you need to know for DAI are:

- Templars are a force that used to oppress Mages. Now the Mages have broken free of Templar control, but the two factions have been at war.
- There is a conclave (a gathering) of those two factions to try and establish peace.
- The game starts as the conclave is about to happen.

(I'm super simplifying it, but that's the basic idea)

Also, the Fade is an alternate dimension (in layman terms), held back from our world by "the veil". When the veil is torn, demons can come into the world through it.

Are these all humans? Or are they all species, just all united under the Templar/Mage class?

Also, in what way were tactics downgraded? Are there less tactics, or just less slots to use in battle? If the latter, I'll consider it a balance decision.
