Halo: MCC might not use dedicated servers (update: p2p only as fallback, post #278)

I've played ~60 matchmade games since launch, primarily in the ranked H2A playlist. Haven't seen any evidence of anything other than dedicated servers.

I would get on wireshark and prove this if i weren't at work but considering i've seen hosts migrating in Custom Games, and a stark contrast in lag between two Game Leaders (hosts) in customs (one with Comcast, 1 with awful DSL) and the latter was unplayable....

Pretty positive this is still a peer 2 peer experience.

I certainly think a good chunk of games i have been playing have been on dedis.

I dont think Halo CE BTB would have been as awesome if they were using P2P and for the most part it played very very well

I say P2P is a fallback... unless for some reason i am host every game but when i hold back on game start, i see all the players lag indicators the same before they disappear (host would normally show one person green, everyone else red/yellow iirc)

I can log connections on my firewall when I get home to see if I am connecting P2P, I figure I should pull host most of the time with a 175/175 connection.

Geez, I wanted to buy Halo MCC before Sunset Overdrive because 4 games and online > 1 game, but so far I've only heard bad things concerning Halo's matchmaking and performance problems in Coop/online campaigns.

I think I'll skip it until they fix all these problems (if they ever decide to fix them)

I'm seriously regretting buying Halo MCC over Sunset Overdrive.
I thought that SO came out too close to MCC and that I wouldn't have time for it. What a fool.

might not use servers?

truly dedicated to bringing back the Halo 2 online experience, who knows, maybe "Standby button" might return too!

Guys, this has already been answered by me and others on the previous pages: 343 indicated that P2P is used for Custom Matches. Regular matchmaking games are using dedicated servers. This is why different people are seeing different things regarding hosts, dedicated servers, etc. It depends on whether you are playing a custom match or not.

Does the kicking/booting people out of games during matchmaking correlate with host and/or p2p?

Stuck at work and can't verify if anybody can boot someone out or just one person.

This has been a pretty big disappointment over all... I just want to play some H2 multiplayer. This is the whole reason I went Bone over ps4. Granted I'm having pretty good time with the updated campaign for H2. I just hope there's some official statement on this particular subject soon

I'll wait until MM is working before commenting.

It seems that sometimes there's a host and sometimes there isn't, and sometimes it says dedicated servers. Are those server updates out yet?

There is no real evidence that they are not using Dedicated servers. Only one guys speculation. Why does everyone jump the gun so fast? I have only seen Host migration in custom games. Which have been confirmed to be Peer to Peer.

Seriosuly... There a screenshot proof in this page, but nope let's ignore it. I know I had the same message a couple of times.

Not really - it's a port of a legacy game. Rewriting the entire networking/hosting stack was probably a bridge to far.

If Halo 5 doesn't use dedis, THEN we'll have a reason to complain...

I don't know, I expect all first party games to use dedi's.

Seems weird that a game like TF has dedi's but a Halo (even if it is just a legacy compilation) doesn't.

Then again, seems it might have dedi's after all...

So the game is lying to me?

No. From time to time, you'll see 2 things. First a host migration prompt and secondly it'll launch into a game loading screen without that. Also press start to see if you're able to end the game and kick players because host privileges for a party sometimes get given to a player over all players in a game

Is the host migration message not evidence?

They may be using old P2P code in some playlists while trying to fix the mess, maybe?

Why not just come out and say that, then?

Everybody saw the message at one time. The thing is, when you finally get into a game, the dedicated servers DEFINITELY aren't working. All games have a single person acting as a host, and for that he/she has a tremendous advantage.

What we want to know is that if this is happening because of the matchmaking problems, or the HALO: MCC is going to use the same approach that Gears of War 3 did with dedicated servers, where there was a limited number of them and you had to be lucky to get into a lag-free, host advantage-less match.

Part of me wishes that they simply stuck to Halo 2 and recreated the original multiplayer experience. I really miss those days. I think the most discouraging part is the wait time in between games. I've only had the opportunity to play 3 so far, and there was something like 20 minutes of down time between loading screens, finding players, etc. I also find it strange that I have to exit the post carnage screen and select my play lost again instead of continuing until I decide to leave the lobby. Halo 2 back in the day, you'd have like 5 minutes of downtime between 3 games.

My game also froze on a loading screen after my 3rd game. -_-

"Xbox Live is the service. Dedicated servers is the benefit. That is the reason why these games are going to be better, why the experience for multiplayer is going to be better.

"And we're being clear, hopefully around all of the games that will take advantage of it, whether it is a game like Forza Horizon 2, or whether it's Halo: The Master Chief Collection, particularly the Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer beta."
"Hopefully around all" isn't a very clear statement of intent, Phil.

I love how people are assuming they aren't using dedis when there has been no confirmation and it's entirely possible p2p is the back-up they are using while fixing dedicated server issues overall.

Let's not call it "pathetic" until we have proof, or we know they aren't just going p2p as an emergency scenario.
