Do I need to play the previous Dragon age games to understand the story?

You might get a quick introduction to the game's world and lore. They sort of went off the road after Origins and Awakening IMO. I bet you'll be fine. If not; play the original and the expansion after you play through Inquisition. I doubt they'd confuse everyone with how DA2 turned out.

Out of curiousity anyone do a hands on with the 360 or PS3 version of the game? im curious how they look relative to the next gen/PC version

Play the whole thing like a Star Trek time-travel episode.

I'd take a 10% graphics reduction over swap controls.

You don't get the unique interface with console. I prefer the PC version because it's set up like a traditional Baldur's Gate game. I'd pick that in this specific type of game any day of the week.

That alone is aesthetics and control put together.

On PC do you use WASD to move manually or do you have to click to move? I could not get into the first game because of this.

You don't have to but knowing the lore and the general story/characters will be very helpful, especially since many show up in DA:I.

These two things will greatly help you:

Pc gamer did a video for the keep and it's choices, (it's 2.5 hours long).

Kotaku's written primer, detailing the basic storyline and factions/races, etc (They don't cover in detail like the above pc gamer video with the characters, etc).

You might want to play the PC version of 1. Do not play 2 unless you like wasting your time.

Honestly there isn't a whole ton of story to worry about. It certainly isn't a deep story. There are darkspawn and you must stop them is the main deal.
Origins: You kill a giant dragon that is supposedly an "arch demon" but it is really just a huge dragon. Game over. DA2: Shit game I honestly don't remember a single thing about the story other than I kicked the shit out of some Quinari 1v1 and I think that allowed me to broker peace with them? IDK game was so bad my memory is trying to erase it.

I think you can do either. Click in tactical mode and wasd in ots mode.

Don't forget the
Broodmother
.

I'm glad I wasn't the one that had to say it.

I don't know if that's a positive because low still looks passable or a negative because I can hardly tell the difference in ultra

There's some very noticable differences.

Look at the hair for example, it's very "plastic" looking and way too shiny.

Also the lighting in general is a lot more natural on ultra (IE The hallway scene with all the spell effects going off).

Then you have foilage that isn't even in the low setting on the ground, the tree shadows, ambient features and other things scaled back or completely missing.

DA2 is not a waste of time. There is a huge amount of references and character carryover in just the first 6 hours I played of the Inq trial.

I mean playing through 40 hours or whatever of DA2 is a waste of time. The game is bad. He would be much better off just reading up on the lore/characters than going through the same dungeon 15 times.

Of course this is my own opinion, but it's not like I'm a man on an island on this one.

I am in San Francisco. USA get's a bad rep, but it's a massive country. San Fran (both Comcast and AT&T) internet is blazing fast for sure.

Another reason to hate Long Island. Figures SF is good with all the techies out there. I had both Comcast and AT&T when I lived in CT and they absolute dogshit. Crappy Cablevision/Optimum and Verizon Fios is like a whole new world and I know they are pretty shitty. Didn't think anyone else in the US had that much better internet outside of the Google Fiber.

Reading up lore is nowhere near the same experience as travelling through a story with characters you like. You don't get to listen to banter and have all the neat interactions. I probably wouldn't like varric and Cassandra as much as I did in the trial if it weren't for all the humour in the second game.

Go go GMG. Key in hand and registered on Origin. I'll start the download tonight. I didn't realize we were getting the pre-order weapons too. Pretty cool for the $48 price point.

So, I got my key and the pre-load is almost done. What am I supposed to do now until the 17th or 18th? I should probably look into what character I want to make but that will eventually drive me mad.

OK blue_phazon give DA2 a shot and see if it was worth your time.
don't do it man

It must be done. No matter how much you may wish it you may not play as a half-human, half-Dwarf mage.

You must make a choice.

Not too sure if it's true (PS4 user here) but someone on Twitter said: "Tip: if you're pre-loading the digitual deluxe edition of Dragon Age: Inquisition, the soundtrack is in a bonus folder in game directory."

I'm.... having trouble telling the difference...

edit: Ah. Watching the video I'm seeing more of a difference. Low still looks really good though. Lighting much better on Ultra.

edit2: and that Aliasing....

The Low hair is really plactic looking.

Yeah, PC preload will get it at least and you can listen it already.

God damn, looks like the game is already cracked.

Doesn't seem like it, there's torrents going around but they're just the pre-load files (though everything is ready to go, .exe is there, just blocked until the release date). The game seems to use the same protection as FIFA 15 and Lords of the Fallen though, those haven't been cracked yet.

I'm just going to avoid Reddit completely until I complete the game. Too many douchebags who think it's funny to post stuff with spoilers in the title.

be kinda crazy/impressive for them to crack a game and go through an 80 hour game just to troll and spread spoilers, but yeah thats a good idea
