Yes, you can grab a friend on your console and do 2-player online Team Smash
I know because I've been doing it
edit: This is the only mode they allow two people on the same console to be online. If you do With Anyone regular smash it only accepts Player One

It took me forever to die in there. Also I'm using the LAN adapter the lag was damn good for both of you being on wifi.

What content can you transfer over from the 3DS version? Not temporarily, but like do I have to unlock all those custom moves again?

Really glad I picked up an amiibo now. I mainly online warrior it up with friends, so I tend to frequently use the regular offline smash as a sort of training room. Seeing my Star Fox amiibo level up and adapt to my play style has been pretty satisfying so far.

Yeah I caught the full force of that bat. The Wrecking Crew stage is actually pretty fun.

I tested CableMatters one and had good luck with it. It can help reduce ping.
Although since it is P2P, hopefully you do not connect to someone with a terrible connection.
Edit: This was for an office project since we may be replacing laptops with a Surface.
With online being a good surprise, the 2nd wave of reviews will likely be just as good and Smash will likely get some GOTY awards.
I always wished polished Nintendo local MP games could be ported well online. It's finally happening
