Metal Gear Solid V - PC vs. PS4 screenshot comparison

Seems much more lighting in the PC version as well.

I think all the lighting is present in the PS4/console version, it's just rendering at a much farther distance in the PC version. Once you get closer to those light sources you'd see them on PS4. The LOD is much higher for those effects on PC.

You can't even see the barbed wires in PS4 shot, that's not even that far. The farther you look the more missing details show up.

Honestly, if a difference remotely this huge in geometry and foliage LOD distance would occur between the PS4 and XB1 version of any game, people would call it "LODgate" and the thread would reach 200 pages in an hour.

This. But I think it'll be much more noticeable in motion.
GZ had a lot of pop-in...
Also dithering hasnt been eliminated... except on rocks.

To everyone who did their part.

If you look at this, don't you see that some geometry, foliage and lights are completely missing on PS4 at medium to long distances?

Exactly. On the far left side, there's a whole new fence and cable. If you look to the left of the American flag there's a new stand or building of some sort back there. There's new lighting everywhere. On the far right side, you can see more vegetation.

And this is all from one screenshot. It's a fairly big difference.

The slider has some really big differences, man. The LOD, the water puddles, the light sources, vegetation, the fence/cable...its pretty noticeable >_>

Damn, shaping up to be a good port!

Depressing, yet true

I wonder if Anisotropic Texture Filtering comes with the PS4 version... probably not, since it seems to be the norm even for this PS4/XBO generation.

Also, since this is running at 60fps on the PS4, I imagine it should mean some easy downsampling for those of us with decent GPU's.

*instantly reminded of GTA grassgate thread*

Well we already know that since the PS4 version is already released, and it features a very low or non-existent level of AF. One of the main faults in the IQ of the game.

But can you see and mark enemies through the reflections?

EDIT: I suppose better LOD would make the game harder since enemies might be harder to see in the distance...

Ah, I wasn't aware of that. Yeah, it's definitely a big flaw, IQ-wise.

  • 60 FPS frame rate
  • Additional deferred lights per scene
  • Additional shadows per scene
  • Higher-resolution render targets
  • Higher-resolution shadows
  • Increased detail over distances
  • NVIDIA SLI Multi-GPU support
  • Options to adjust seven graphics features (Effects, Lighting, Screen Filtering, Shadows, Texture Filtering, Textures)
  • Resolution support up to and including 3840x2160 (4K)
  • Screen Space Reflections

Didn't somebody say the engine was limited to 1080p resolution?

PC Dominance! =)

I feel that comparing the PC versions of games with their PS4/Xbox One counterparts is about as fruitful as comparing the graphics of PS4/Xbox One games with their Wii U counterparts. I suppose others are working under the same assumption.

Some people just want to appreciate the tech gap between PC and console multiplats and couldn't care less if this is considered "fair".

I suppose others are working under the same assumption.

If Wii U games were actually getting releases of these same games, there's no reason not to include them in any comparisons.

Otherwise, I see no reason that the only comparisons worth talking about are the PS4 and XB1 versions. Seems like convenience more than anything to me. Laughably see-through convenience.

Play around with this

I did. Unless you're a complete pixel nerd (I know, I know, we're on GAF), you can hardly see any meaningful difference.

Comparison isn't well made anyway, there's slightly more contrast on the PC pic to make it look better (PS4 pic look a bit washed out, like if they chose "limited" color range instead of "full", it doesn't look washed out when correctly calibrated).

For 99.9 % of people (including me), those pics look nearly identical. That's the magic of diminishing returns and it will only get worse.

If you want a fair comparison, you certainly won't find it on Nvidia website anyway...

Looks exactly the same to me...

Only visible diference is the Screen Space Reflections... and even that is possible to implement on a PS4

Since they are screenspace, they only show what is already on your screen. So that would b very redundant.

That's actually a really cool idea for a game.

People actually noticing lod now!? Am I still at neogaf? Lol

Kinda hard to not notice, especially in GZ.

Bottom tier damage control.

Your words come accross as hollow IMO given your post history.
That's actually a really cool idea for a game.

Yeah, the day when that happens will be awesome. But for now you can "techncially" do this with non-screen based stuff. Like shadows.
