I have 7 piercings in total. o3 o

Only 3 are visible though.

Edit: I wanna get a tattoo that starts from my waist and leads up to my rib cage, whats the pain like for something like that?
whats the pain like for something like that?
You'll feel it going in, but it won't be unbearable.

Tattoos pretty much feel like someone drawing on you with a firepen.

I have a wicked new school version of Ridley from Metroid working on my right upper arm. After that finishes up I'm going to have the same guy finish my bicep portion with a new school metroid. For my forearm I'm still not 100% positive, I think on my outer forearm I want an arwing shooting at a tie fighter, and on the inner I was thinking a reaper from mass effect shooting a laser at a planet exploding at my inner elbow, but that part in particular is very up in the air. I'm not sure how a really detailed planet on my inner elbow is gonna feel/turn out. I think I might round out the composition with a pinup version of Samus in the zero suit shooting at ridley on my upper pec too. Ridley's about half coloured but is pretty sick. Obviously I'm going for a space/sci fi aesthetic, any ideas or suggestions would be very much appreciated!

do you have any tattoos? everyone's pain threshold is different. tattoos hurt for me, especially the neck. 2 hours of shading were torture. chest and arms weren't too bad. elbow was in the middle. no idea about the ribs but i think it'd be in the upper spectrum of hurt. i think listening to music with headphones helps alleviate some of the pain so you can concentrate on something other than the electric hum of the needle.

Second this. Don't be afraid to bring a music player and just zone out during long sessions. I fucked up and left my phone in the car while getting my arm done so I had to "talk" to the artist. Worst choice ever.

Painful, but addictive. I've got three tattoos right now and all have been varying degrees of pain. As another mentioned, everyone has different pain thresholds but you will definitely feel some pain considering the method of drawing onto your body.

I have three tattoos right now. My first was a dragon on my left arm as I'm a mad fantasy reader, second was the piranha plant from Mario on my right leg and third one is my right arm sleeve of plated armour. Each one has hurt in different ways. My first didn't hurt too much, my leg was painful closer to the bone and my sleeve was extremely painful towards the collar bone.

Being on your waist and leading up to your rib cage, I'm going to suspect a high amount of pain on the rib cage section. However, I would also say pain is going to happen wherever there is little muscle.

Second this. Don't be afraid to bring a music player and just zone out during long sessions. I fucked up and left my phone in the car while getting my arm done so I had to "talk" to the artist. Worst choice ever.

This is something I strongly suggest to anyone getting a tattoo. Doesn't even have to be music, can be a tablet/laptop or mobile phone. Something to pull your attention away from the pain and the needle humming. I was in the chair for 12 hours with my sleeve, and so was quite grateful to have a tablet. Luckily my tattooist is amazing and hilarious so talking to him was fine, but that distraction does help.

Cool, you think its a good placement?

Well... from my own personal experience, I kind of wish I mapped out a sleeve for my arms to sort of run on a theme. Right now, my arm is a clusterfuck of 10+ years of random tattoos. If I could do it over again I would have picked a central theme and wrapped my arm which just looks nice.

I say that because you don't have anything. If you're just getting this one tattoo, great. Good spot, not that painful (to me anyway, everyone's different) But if you think you might want to do more, a half sleeve, full... I would rethink it unless you have a DNA type theme going or this is it for you.

I hope that makes sense. I mean, it's your body but if I had a tattoo regret it would be not to get sporadic tattoos. I'd get one big piece on my arm or at least the same theme.

Ribs are always mentioned as one of the most painful and difficult spots to tattoo. Heard feet can be pretty painful. On Ink Master they had to do butt tattoos. Everyone talked about how painful they are but looking it up they aren't considered to be one of the more painful areas. Worst place I would think is the head from the pounding, would give me massive headaches.

I'm not gonna lie, i've never felt more pain then when i had my ribs done.
The pain lasted a couple of days as well, didn't have that when i had my arm done.

Im not looking to get a sleeve, but perhaps something else on the other arm. Right now I have two drawings. The other will be on my back on my lats I think. Generally I'm thinking of chemical/biological tattoos.

Thanks for your thoughts though, I'll be sure to keep that in mind.

NP. It wouldn't be detrimental either way but it's definitely something most people don't think about.

The biggest advice I can give to someone coming in fresh is to think over everything! Do not rush into a decision without mulling it over for the very least a good few months. Tattoos are permanent, and so you'll be living with it for the rest of your life. Make it a good one, and make sure you get the placement just right so that you can go back to it in the future and expand if you want.

Also Kiryani, that eye is awesome.

Edit: and because I've jumped in here offering my two cents here are my three tattoos. Beware, pastiness.

As others have already said, ribs are probably on the upper scale of the spectrum.

Regarding the pain, it's obviously wise to assume pain and if you don't suffer too much on the day then it's a bonus. Before I had my first I worked myself into a real panic about how much it would hurt. I don't have a particularly high threshold for pain or anything and I'm not being macho about it, but it didn't hurt me too much at all. On the contrary, I actually quite enjoy the sensation of having them done. I can see how people find them addictive.

Well, I've now got 4. All on the arms though, admittedly I've yet to have anything done in a "red zone" for pain. I want something across my chest which I guess will be the big test for that.

For me the biggest thing was just getting a concept of what it feels like to be in the chair and what the needle actually feels like. Now I know that, I think if be in a better position to deal with pain when I get some done in worse areas.

I'm sure you know this anyway buy always pick the work you want based on why and where you actually want it. Don't pick based on where hurts the most or least. If you want the work doing on your ribs then go for it. The pain, to whatever degree you feel it, will be temporary, but you'll get the chance to love the awesome piece you end up with forever.

Hey dudes. Don't bring headphones and music in. It makes it super boring for us.

I only suggest it to those who feel uncomfortable with pain (though should be expected with the task at hand) and to those who just want a simple distraction. Obviously chatting with the tattooist is the best thing to distract you, and all three of my tattoos I've had a great yarn.

Very well actually. I'll grab a photo of it later today, but it has been about a year or so since I got it and no real stretching/fading has occurred. My original plan was to continue it as a full sleeve down to the forearm with a bracer and over to the chest with chest plate armour, but funds and time have put that dream to rest.

I'm actually planning on getting a new one finally, tossing up between either of these two on my left leg.

Headphones and music are definitely worth taking in I think.

As much as I love the guy that does my tattoos, I can't help but hate him after a few hours of hurting me. I think that's just human nature.

If you're having a big session then you do sometimes need to zone out for the last hour or 2 when it's really sore.

I would definitely advise against taking in your iPod to get some flash on your arm or something though, that's a bit insulting.

Question for people who have had colored tattoos for several years. How have the colors held up over time in detailed pieces?

There are some pieces that I want done which would involve a lot of color. My worry is how those will look years down the line. I imagine they aren't as vibrant after some time. But can they easily look as good as when they were new if you get them touched up? Also, how often do people get colored pieces touched up?

Sorry for all the questions, but all my tattoos have only been in black ink so far so I'm not really familiar with colored tattoos.

Id like to know this as well, since i'll be getting a colored sleeve (Mega Man) soon.

I have 10 tattoos all below the waist. I probably should post a few pics of them. On my right leg between the knee and ankle is pretty much covered in tattoos, left leg has one on the side of the calf, one on my big toe and one on my right butt cheek.

The one on my butt cheek was my most recent one and it took just over 2 hours. It was by far the sorest tattoo I've ever got. I think if the tattoo had of been two sessions it would still be unfinished. Surprisingly the aftercare wasn't too bad. Skin just felt very tight on my butt. The second worst pain is on the back of the leg at the knee.

Oh, one more question. How much do you think it'll cost? I guess that depends where I go.

Depending on how big you want it. I can ballpark between $150-200 with tip. Most people, if not all I've seen, won't open a needle for less than $50 and usually set prices per hours worked.

Just finished getting my first tattoo today.

Most of the colouring was done last week but we ran out of time. I forgot to photograph it fresh so my skin is sort of dry/peeling here

This wing was the last to be finished today but the artist wants to touch a few spots up in a month or so

Fantastic :) I'm hoping to get it before starting grad school

I have had a lot of tattoos done including two four sittings on my ribs. I did not have another tattoo for three years after having my ribs done. It hurts, and anyone saying otherwise is lying. However, it was worth it in the end because of I have two really great pieces of ink now.

Interesting how many people here are saying they not know why they got the tattoo, but just liked it. In person, almost everyone who has told me about theirs gives some little story or philosophy with theirs.

Amazing!

I'd like to say mine had some deeper meaning, like birds representing a free spirit, but I'd be lying. It just looked nice!

Has anyone got any advice on healing? My fiancée and I got our tattoos about 4 months ago ish - mine was plain black and is completely fine. She got one black and one red - the black has healed completely but the red scabbed over and has a thick scab over it. It's also itchy for her. She's been moisturising it with nappy rash cream for the last few months but it just doesn't seem to be getting better.

Also, my helix piercings are finally not as sore! Nearly!

I just got my nostril pierced about a month ago. I've had one of those pesky bumps appear and I've already tried an aspirin paste on it, to no avail. Just started trying out tea tree oil today at the suggestion of my piercer (my skin seems to be handling it fine). She said if this doesn't work out to replace it with a stud (currently a ring) because it's also getting knocked around a bit while I sleep.

Anyone else have any experiences with this or suggestions for things that worked for you to get that bump gone?

Got my 8 guage curved barbell Prince Albert this morning down in Denver at Iris piercing. The guy who pierced me worked at High Priestess in Eugene, which is where I got both my tragus pierced. The PA pain wasn't as bad as my tragus piercings, but it was still a pretty intense experience. I've had a bit of bleeding, but not like I thought I would.

God bless all my old friends/And god bless me too, why pretend?
I mentioned a while back that I was going to get my first tattoo, and that it would be video game related.. and.. well.. here it is :)

Gaffers with chest tattoos, how bad was the pain?

I thinking of getting a semi large chest piece. I'm skinny, to the point where my ribs are visible so I'm scared of the pain.

It hurts a lot. Will hurt more depending who does it and if you're gonna go colour or not as well.

a lot of my threads involve me fucking up somehow. Perhaps I'm a moron?
My buddies bailed on our reading week ski trip, so fuck it, new tattoo!
Starting my sleeve on Saturday. It's been two years since my last tattoo, and the girlfriend got her ribs done in the fall, (which made me jealous) so I'm pretty stoked. I'll post pics on Sunday :)
