Starcraft 2 player disqualified from tournament because of rape tweet

I think even using the verb "destroy" (it's an RTS) would have been borderline in that sentence.

Why exactly would "destroy" be considered offensive or inappropriate?

That would be like trying to go all pitchfork and torches on shaq for him calling the team "kings" the queens since it could be interpreted as a double entendre.

I don't know any women who'd drop "rape" like it's a silly thing. It'd be more like black guys saying, "you're gonna get lynched!" It's a kind of line that people don't cross.

I know girls that would call each other bitches and shit, but rape is usally a sensitive topic.
competitive teenaged girls and women caught up in the competitive cod type gaming adopt the language. I have heard plenty of female gamers talk like that.

No, it is.

It's contextual, and very similar in terms
Of this argument.

The same way some black people believe it's okay to say the N just word because it they are black is VERY SIMILAR to how some people think it's okay for a girl to say RAPE just because raped is mostly associated with females.

If a male says rape it's awful, and less accepted then a female saying it because it's mostly associated with them.

Same with Some black people thinking it's okay to say the N word just because they are black.
If a white person said it, it would be an out cry.

This is not opinion, nearly fact.
None of these views are mine.

what the fuck?

anecdotal, but i literally have never heard this view from ANYONE, and I know a lot of women, honestly.

what the fuck, seriously? who are these women you're hanging out with who casually drop 'rape' into minute-to-minute conversation and expect no heads to turn, because they're women?

Edit: I DONT GET IT

So if I'm going to play a basketball match and one guy of the other team says "We're going to rape you". Should I call the police?

I don't really know what your point is here. I am a 24 year old dude, so of course I hear that phrase sometimes while playing sports or during online gaming. While it doesn't personally offend me or make me "scared", I can still see how it is a distasteful thing to say and that it could offend somebody. Because of that, I don't use that kind of language. It's not like it is a very hard thing to do or understand man.

Can you point out some examples of women in competition stating they want to rape their opponents? Tennis, soccer, basketball, skiing, gymnastics, gaming, MMA, anything?

This is so random and has nothing to do with my post. I didn't say it's right for a woman to say rape?

Anything having to deal with rape should not be permitted anywhere.

can we agree that the gaming culture is a powerful influential beast for the good and bad? Everyone is now saying get rekt, its the new get raped and soon that will change and everyone will be saying something else.

You don't have to be confused, I've never heard a women casually drop the word 'rape' either.

At least he acknowledged his mistake and publicly apologized. Doesn't mean he has done no wrong, but nobody in this world is completely free of making mistake or poor decision.

I'm not in line with this. People who do and say stupid shit and then lose money over it typically apologize because they are sorry they are not making money anymore NOT because they feel they made a mistake. The world is full of transparent mea culpas. This guy should have been banned for life. He will be back and most likely laughing about it with his buddies. If anything, he needs to be told he had to attend rape panels (similar to drunk driving ones) if he is to come back.

Then that's more about women in gaming tournaments adapting to the culture. The "n" word isn't a basketball or a football thing, it's larger. "Rape" as slang for women really only exists in gaming culture afaik according to you, so that's another reason the language should be changed. As someone above pointed out, they got the n word out of the nfl, it shouldn't be a big deal.

"I'm going to destroy some girl #fragmasters"

How does that sound to you

There is nothing to be confused about. I'm simply saying that if the girl said this about the guy, not many people would care. I'm sure the guy wouldn't care either.

I'm not saying it's right, because it's definitely wrong; but it's sadly true and that's the world we live in.

I don't understand how some of you just don't get what I'm trying to say.

have you played cod online? cod in itself have breeded a really bad culture and the language used on there hurts my soul for society. I have heard grown woman men, teenaged boys and girls all say some really bad things. From homophobic things to racial things. Just allot of bad words on there.

I think the "some girl" part sounds worse then the "destroy" part. If he wrote, "I am going to destroy Madelisk in the next match" or something along those lines I don't think it would be perceived as offensive.

I'm sorry but people are just wimps nowadays. Didn't like what he said? Either insult him back and beat his ass at the game, or stop playing because you obviously can't handle a little trash talk. HE CALLED ME NAMES, WAAAHHHH! DISQUALIFY HIM HE SAID MEAN THINGS TO ME IN A COMPETITION! WAAHHHH. Good lord. People all up in arms over a weak and uninspired insult, calling for a lifetime ban....now THAT is offensive. Pretty soon people aren't even going to be able to play around with eachother and say anything that could be considered offensive by anyone anywhere. Sounds like a real fucking boring world to live in.

I can't remember the last time I heard a woman use the word "rape" outside of the actual definition/context of the word. No woman I've played games with has EVER said they want to rape me, in the context of winning over me.

As for your comparison to nigga/nigger, please just stop. The black community's appropriation of the n-word is far more complex than your analogy can ever do service and is not analogous to this situation, at all.

Usually when people put their foot in their mouth, they don't try to justify the taste....

I'm confused because in my short 23 years here, I've never heard a woman try to excuse her use of 'rape' in a casual sentence because she's a woman. It's mind boggling to me that you think this is a real thing.

they get it out the tournaments but for us the average joes who game online from time to time it will be there to stay. We have to use party chat or ignore features to combat it.

Thank you for being a part of the problem.

Do you really have to be a hardass to enjoy your videogames or competitive play?

I can't remember the last time I heard a woman use the word "rape" outside of the actual definition/context of the word. No woman I've played games with has EVER said they want to rape me, in the context of winning over me.

No one I know says it casually? And I never said that. In fact I don't talk to anyone who uses that word casually, if at all.

Really, all I'm saying is that IF this girl said it to this guy, this wouldn't even be a thread.

That's it.

Christ, seriously?

His biggest mistake wasn't equality, it was using the word rape to describe someone on twitter. Pretty much any other word but rape in the context of that tweet would have been fine and not newsworthy or disqualification-worthy.

Destiny is an asshole.

1. If the best trash talk you're capable of is on the level of "I'm gonna rape you", you need to step your game up.

2. It's amazing that some people can't grasp why the same shit talk you do with friends in private should not be used with a person you've never met before, on a public medium.

3. On the suggestion that English isn't Kas' first language, was he using "rape" too mean "plunder"?

Clearly.

I think this is a big one people forget.

A good buddy of mine and I get racist as hell towards one another when we play P4Arena or any other fighting game, any two-minute slice of which could probably get us jailed for hate crimes if we were to actually get involved in a physical altercation. I've said shit to him which would make the most ardent KKK members say "Dude, the fuck?" and he's said stuff to me which would cause a Black Panthers-era Sam Jackson to raise one disapproving eyebrow at him.

We get to say that stuff to one another not because it's okay language, but because we know it's in good fun, neither of us mean it, and we're too busy laughing at one another to get angry.

I would not repeat a god-damned word of what we say to one another to any human being on the face of this planet, save maybe my brother.

A couple of years ago he got drunk while streaming and repeatedly groped Mia Rose (twitch streamer). destiny has a long gross history of sexism, homophobia and racism.
didnt he also pass around some selfies a woman had sent him and when she found out she posted his dick pics on his twitter?

it was in the middle of an mlg iirc and he dropped out because of it.

Usually when people put their foot in their mouth, they don't try to justify the taste....
if me saying I have been gaming for years and heard it all is any form of justification then sue me. I love how me saying its got to stop has been ignored. I guess me picking the controller and getting a internet connection put my foot there.

It's embarrassing how immature gaming culture is. I have never seen any other community with such low level of sportsmanship and where slurs and threats are so commonplace. I mean can you imagine a professional athlete publicly saying they're going to rape their opponent? The fact that it's become so normal in gaming is a problem that needs to be fixed, and I'm glad Fragbite took action here. As someone else mentioned, even the NFL has banned the use of the N-word.

You sound like a real winner in general.

I have to admit, if they took hookers out of GTAV I'd be annoyed. I didn't even pick up a hooker in the entire duration of the time I played GTAV now that I think about it (but did in all the others lol), but to start censoring games from stuff like that is bullshit imo. I don't care who it offends.

A strong female character that's well written? No problem whatsoever. I'd welcome it.

But if we start having the sexism police take the strippers out of Duke Nukem 3D, it would bother me. Maybe that makes me a misogynist, I don't know. I'm anti censorship across the board.

Listen, if I started getting serious death threats about videos I'm posting, I'd stop posting them.

If she's strong enough to keep on going forward, then that's awesome and more power to her.

But she just has to expect that more shit talking and death threats are coming. And if she keeps posting more videos knowing that, I kind of doubt she's taking the threats very seriously.

She can state that as much as she wants, but she doesn't really believe it. If she really thought there was nothing wrong with liking those games, she wouldn't be trying to have them changed in the first place.

As sad as it is, she has to know going into making each one of these videos that she's going to get the same shit every time.

It's like an atheist going around the evangelical christian community constantly yelling and yammering about the atrocities of the church and discrepancies in the bible, then crying victim when a couple crazed zealots inevitably threaten to kill them. Of course some nuts are going to threaten you when you "threaten" their way of life. If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen.

I didn't even get to the second page.

The person he was playing against didn't report him as far as the story goes. The group hosting the tournament saw it and disqualified him. He didn't do this during the competition either, he did it over twitter.

I can't even think of how not saying rape competitively is going to make the world less boring

Why exactly ?
This is the internet, the default is to interpret things negatively.

"I'm going to destroy some girl #fragmasters"

How does that sound to you

Slippery slope there. You should realize that. It leads to pedistals that shouldn't exist. Also, banning normal adjectives sounds pretty dumb as well.

Also, to quote myself earlier in the thread.

The "some girl" part shouldn't even be considered offensive either, since it is just dismissive of the opponent in general. It could easily be replaced by "some guy" in any instance where the opponent is some unknown and has no history/record.

This sort of thing makes for "amusing" drama though, especially when irony strikes and the person making the statement gets beaten soundly. Generally speaking for myself, beating "known" players as an "unknown" individual tend to be more satisfying given the arrogance shown commonly enough.

Your sentiment shown is a bit on the extreme end of the scale where nothing could be said other than GG, which in its self is condecending depending on how the match went down.

I sincerely hope that the word destroy or a vague impersonal reference towards another individual do not impact your life negatively in a direct manner. It just seems like it would be rather difficult to get through day to day interactions with anyone who is even remotely irritated at anything and you getting blow off from that (IE, never work in customer service ever).

It might not be a thread, but that doesn't mean it's okay.

I'm glad there IS uproar over this, as it gives the gaming community a chance to stop using this word so casually.

Unfortunately, it will just show the fact that some people are still "kinda ok" with it.

LOL you think stuff like this isn't said on the field of every professional sport known to man? Maybe not on twitter, but you obviously haven't spent time in any really competitive situations if you think everything is all flowers and hugs in sports.

if the consequences of twitter could be extended to youtube, that would be amazing. Youtube is still over infested with these types of comments. ALL THE TIME.

LOL you think stuff like this isn't said on the field of every professional sport known to man? Maybe not on twitter, but you obviously haven't spent time in any really competitive situations if you think everything is all flowers and hugs in sports.

We should take his word for it guys, i think he plays in every paid competitive sport.

I'm an amateur tennis player, can confirm it's all flowers and hugs.

Also I said publicly, so yeah, on Twitter or something like that.

I think the DQ was justified since the tourney runners get to decide who they associate with, but some of you are really taking it too far by asking for a lifetime ban on this and every other tournament. Should we also extend it to sequels, spinoffs and unrelated games just to round out the overreaction? There's little sense in punishing him for potentially the rest of his life for off the cuff remarks many of you have undoubtedly used when you were young/foolish -- but didn't have pervasive social media to expose your faults.

I don't like what he said, but I strongly believe it came from a place of friendly trash talk. Everyone admits it's wrong, dude got penalized, he apologized in a sincere manner, an appropriate example was made of the situation, no further harm was caused. I think it's okay to move on without destroying someone's life for years to come.
