So it looks like all the schools and many businesses will be closed tomorrow. I understand it and it ultimately is the safe thing to do, but it feels wrong to just assume the worst and cower in fear like this.

Looting! Rioting! I hope the same people are more concerned about the killing of American civilians by its own police force. But by all means, advocate peace and voting for one side while the other is free to kill without consequence.

And when things get bad, the side doing all the killing gets backed up by the national guard. Seems fair.
If someone sets half of my house on fire I am not going to protest the injustice of it all by angrily getting out some gasoline and lighting the other half ablaze. Addressing a problem by actively making it worse is not a solution. As upset as I am by police corruption and inequality in America in general, I'm a touch more frustrated when black people behave in ways that perpetuate the cycle while completely neglecting the actual systems in place that could affect a change.

It's self defeating.

So I was listening to the union leader for the police department this morning. He said if there is no indictment he expects Wilson to be back on the Ferguson force. Like how that will work? lol

If he's not indicated I wonder how long he'll have to stay in hiding.

It was actually reported he was negotiating a retirement with the Ferguson police force.

just what needs to be done when dealing with a bunch of unstable, unpredictable, violent blacks!

the underlying racism of it all is quite sickening

Yes, they do exist because of voting. You vote (or don't vote at all) for people who encourage and support this horrible, corrupt and criminal behavior and guess what, that's what you get, corrupt, criminals running around as cops and politicians. You act as if these practices are made in a vacuum and they aren't.

If we as a society in the US would collectively put our foot down against people like Bob McCulloch and Jay Nixon then maybe we could have people in the position to actually hire cops who aren't sociopaths or at the very least, gun crazy. And then cops wouldn't need cameras strapped to their bodies.

Right, not/voting badly results in violence against citizens (majority of those being brown citizen) As sociopaths are hired, and etc.

You're discussing the larger problem with our democracy being hijacked by said sociopaths and the corrupt. I agree, which is why I know voting is no where near the strength it needs to change violence against brown people in america. Doesn't have the teeth. We are talking about the same corrupt that make voter suppression their #1 tactic to change voting, or, billionaires participating in certain campaigns? Flat out lies being passed through advertising rather than voter education? America has a larger problem with voting, and I doubt this is the thread to discuss those nationwide problems.

Offering it as a realistic solution for people that these things have all been historically happening due to Private Prison/labor contracts + War on Drugs is being a bit unrealistic. Its not as if people voted for corrupt bastards that they expect to kill people. They voted for whomever they were under the impression could do the job better. None of this has anything to do with the nationwide police problems with culture/training/accountability. No, in a modern world, we have cameras and technology. Its used as protection for the officer, and the citizen. There will never be a day in America that cameras on police isn't needed because they've done a 180, and now corrupt people no longer get jobs. That is pure fantasy. Its even more unfortunate that you're aware of all of this, and you're still doubling down on voting being A solution to reduced murder. The solution is what Rialto PD did. Body cameras that immediately reduced crime, and promoted better policing (which lead to accommodations given) anything else is just buttery sweet suggestions to make that have no chance in hell of changing anything.

I get where you're coming from, but it holds no weight in our current America.

edit:

Browns family wasn't told that the GJ had a verdict. Lawyers were upset.

WELP.

Yea it's pretty ridiculous how fear affects people. I drove past a grocery store earlier (work let us out at 3pm). The place looked like the day before thanksgiving a packed parking lot. Businesses boarded up that are nowhere near where a single protest has occurred. The protests that occurred last night are about 6 blocks from me. They're marching down the street and people posting on my neighborhood facebook page say "too close to home" or "I'm worried". They blocked traffic for 15 minutes. Grow up and let them protest

I think the only funny thing about this would be if white people started to riot. Just to throw everyone off and confuse all.

Part of me feels that this is all the intention. The police presence, the national guard. All of this is made to benifit the level of force the PD is allowed to use on ferguson protesters/media. Which will ultimately be the level of force used on the rest of the citizens here.
Last nights protest in my neighborhood (south STL) had a decent minority of white people part of the protests. So it could happen lol

ah, I guess I meant unrelated to the protests in general. But just news of white people from all walks of life rioting in response to the verdict (Whatever it is). To where people/media wouldn't know why the fuck they are rioting.

The system in place is part of the problem. It's racially biased at its core.

In Missouri, once the sentence is served, so is the right to vote:
http://www.moep.uscourts.gov/restoration-rights

I agree with those points, however total turnout in 2013 was 12 percent, that is putrid.

Here are the voting stats for April 2013:
http://www.stlouisco.com/portals/8/docs/document library/elections/eresults/el130402/twnfer.html

Look at that! Look how close these votes were!

This is important and actually changes my opinion somewhat.

The system is still stacked against them in an incredible number of ways, however, and it is much harder to register to vote, get time off to do so, and successfully do so as a black person in Missouri than as a white person, and that needs to be fixed.

I don't like the term "outraged." But yes, I am more frustrated when some black people perpetuate the problem via violent protests instead of trying to address it via avenues that would work if they were actually utilized. Also, ZuhZuhzombie, let me say I also dislike how you've framed your post ("the people") as if the potential rioters in Ferguson speak for every African American in this country.

They don't.

This I could get down with. Targeted and precise violence is a legitimate social movement tactic. No better way to get attention from the government (local, state, federal) than by breaking their stuff.

Which doesn't happen.

When the riots first started here, they were burning gas stations and stealing rims from auto shops. Tell me how that helps anything.

Isn't there beef between local stores and the residents in Ferguson? That is political speech too if that is the case.

Lan Dong Mik

And why would I want them?
This case really should go to trial. To just let him off without a trial based on all the eye witness accounts would be insane. I'm hoping for the best.

That wasn't from the protesters though. They have been organized and peaceful. Although they are asked to protest in certain zones and at certain hours. Which is fucking crazy that so many people aren't bothered by that. If they cross certain lines the police react.
