Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

The best starting point would be the T.Flight HOTAS X

Having a HOTAS (Hands On Throttle And Stick) system really helps in this game.

With a DK2 you don't want to be reaching for the keyboard at all and with this setup you can get pretty much every essential thing mapped to the stick/throttle. I don't use a DK2 but I also never touch the keyboard.

decent enough, but not enough buttons for a totally sightless experience like a HOTAS would give you.

Thanks for the recommendation. Will definitely check this one out. Are there any others that are just good and possibly better to get that are like $10-25 more? I'll spend the extra cash if it gives me a better overall experience. Thanks!

T. Flight is the cheapest HOTAS option. If you step up to a "real" HOTAS from there, it's about $100 more.

However, playing with a "real" HOTAS is a fundamental game changer, especially with VR.

So, that's an interesting video. It seems to be showcasing group play, or what FDev has commonly called "wings", where people can group up and play together with common chat and in the same server "instances". However, that's not in the game right now for gamma, and as far as I know gamma is pretty much feature complete for launch.

So, are they showcasing multiplayer action here which is currently impossible to actually do in the game?

Thanks for the info. Ya, ill definitely get the T. Flight and try it out before going down the HOTAS rabbit hole and spending more money. I just want something thats not a KB+M or X360/PS4 controller.

Its grouping like that is not in gamma. Upcoming feature.

The only thing I don't like about my T.Flight HOTAS X is the USB cable connecting the throttle and the stick together isn't long enough to completely span my Logitech G19 keyboard.

Granted, it's a full size keyboard with some macro keys on the side making it even longer but I still feel the USB (non detachable, sadly) on the T.Flight is a bit too short.

What functionality did they show in that stream that isn't currently in game? If they knew what area their friend was in, and already had open comms group, this could happen today.

Finally found a new powerplant for my Eagle, 6.4MW -> 8.0MW. Bought a 3rd Pulse Laser :D

What weapons do guys you recommend btw?

Nice find! As for weapons, I think that my first purchase will be a gimballed minigun. A third laser of any kind would probably empty my energy reserves way too fast.

I honestly havent played as much i as i would want but, arent the green icons on the radar meaning there's something going on beyond just being in the area and using local chat?

Found my first undiscovered star. Definitely the brightest star I've ever seen in game.

What im surprised about is that everyone focused on sol. Someone has to get to a nebula! Its the one of the coolest area in the game (outside the center probably). I guess it'll take a few more days since its that much farther away than sol.

Aren't friends shows as green when playing in a private group? Been a while, I forget.

Nope. Live stream was semi-bs. What actually happened was that the conflict created a Warzone instance that the other players jumped into and chose the same faction but they played it off like they were a wing or alliance without saying either way. Assuming that's what you're referring to.

I'm going to ask again in the thread since I haven't got a reply on either here or on the official forums (and I have ticketed this, no reply yet), but can anyone see the constellation names in the galaxy map? If you tick the option on/off in the options in the galaxy map, there's no difference, and no constellation names show for me. Wondering if perhaps my download is a bit corrupt or if it's a bug (I haven't seen anyone else mention this).

Not home to check, sorry. I'm sure someone will check it out for you at some point.

This game looks intresting, but why do you have to pay for the beta? It makes no sense, and it's even more expensive than what the game will cost upon release(assuming it will cost the standard 60$)...

You actually can't pay for the beta anymore. And the reason why they asked for more money from beta testers is actually super simple and has been explained many, many times in this thread:
1) Alpha/beta were kickstarter rewards for higher tiers. If they sold alpha/beta access at a regular price that'd be a dick move against those backers
much like it was a dick move towards some other backers to discard offline gameplay
2) If you offer early access at a regular price (moreso if at a discount) then you invite a huge influx of players, many of which could be disappointed by performance/lack of features of early builts. By pricing the beta higher you push away more casual players and stick with a core of dedicated fans of space sim games.

Okay so there is high possibilty of a wipe, but what about credits, will final release give the total amount of them to players in gamma or is a total wipe?

Doesn't seem to do anything for me either, so either not fully implemented yet or a bug.

My take would be a complete wipe especially as players have already been exploiting a loophole which allows you to get a few million CR if you know how to do it!

You have to be close to SOL to get the constellation names. Get to far away and they fade out.

Anyone else having trouble with scanning in Gamma? I've scanned objects but when docked been unable to sell (or even see to sell) the data.

Am I missing something here? Has process changed? Not a biggie but a triffle annoying.

Otherwise I'm liking Gamma a lot so far.

Gamma 1.01 incoming https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=64392

Hi everyone,

Gamma 1.01 is on its way (6PM GMT), with fixes to some of the more pressing issues. Hope you're enjoying playing the Gamma as much as we are (when we get home of course).

Here's the full change log. Enjoy.

- Don't crash when we receive a LoginSuperceded event on login
- Prevent the game from crashing if the basic scan object doesn't exist, if a web request fails
- Prevent crash when cap ship launching fighters, but the fighter is already dead
- Bad system meta data causing disconnect on jumps
- Fix assert when entering Neptune’s ring
- Prevent weapon stream objects crashing when fired from dead ships
- Fix for faction ranks doubling their expected rank in the status panel
- When network startup fails, provide a clean path in final version that present a message box and exits the app cleanly
- Append local machine name to port mapping string in upnp so we don't clean up other people's port mappings on a shared router
- Upnp now uses an infinite lease by default; it's possible to set a finite lease in appconfig if required
- Remove some rare goods from AI load outs
- Ensure that the faction data gatherers for system map are only entered if their preconditions are true
- Fix trading badge not updating on rank increase
- Travel Tutorial now fixed with the Hyperspace binding change
- Fix broken environment map in some stations
- Send telemetry about interdiction
- Cap ship guns should no longer be able to kill other guns (and modules) on the same ship
- Fix some things spamming the message log in multiplayer
- The occurrences of Cox have been renamed to Pippin
- Explorer is now Trail Blazer (Ranks)
- Disallow nebulae from location targets for hyperspace

There are some server-side updates too:

- After strong demand from Commanders, The Revolutionary Party of Cosi are delighted to announce that Zorgon Peterson have agreed to supply the shipyard at Arrhenius Hub with their popular Hauler spacecraft.
- Fixed issue with the launcher not allowing some Gamma eligible players into the game.
- GalNet system news will now correctly show the 5 highest bounties.
- Removed the ability to rename a commander from the support system. This is now done entirely in-game.
- Fixes for duplicate commander names.
- Fixed various starting locations from the commander starter packs.
- Allow commanders to explore more procedurally generated star systems.
- Many minor bug fixes and performance improvements.

Thank you!

This "always connected" future is amazing.. I just want to play some solo to see what kind of new Oculus Rift glitches they managed to put into the 1.01 this time, but all I'm getting is a fucking "load failure" on a cranky server..

Yeah, sounds like the 1.01 update broke the game, only a few people can even log on and those who can get all kinds of server data errors and disconnects. But it sounds like 1.01 broke DK2 support too, see this thread:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=64431

Issue: Light rendering is not working for both eyes in the Oculus Rift DK2 (only working for left eye)

Has a date been set yet for the retail release?

December 16th.

New patch leaves people unable to connect to a game that recently saw a shitstorm over it's now ditched offline mode...the irony is delicious. The handiwork of a disgruntled offline loyalist employee?

Yep, the irony is strong for sure. December 16th is going to be an interesting day....

I'm not defending Frontier when I say this, but it is unfortunately the norm for MMO launches to be extremely unstable. Hopefully they will have all issues fixed by December 16th.

Elite Dangerous is not an MMO. At least, the game design didn't call for it. Why would you force people to play online in a game that has literally billions of destinations?

But I guess developing only the online branch is cheaper and it will prevent those dirty pirates from playing. If the game dies for good in a few years, no big deal! It's not like anyone would play an Elite game for that long in the first place, right?

Yeah. I had a disconnect after scanning and before selling though. Scans since sell okay so I think I'm the victim of a glitch where on my end the system shows as scanned but I can't register the data to sell. Oh well not to worry.

You cannot sell the data anywhere. I am not sure why, but maybe it is because many people have already sold the same data to that particular station or something.

I don't think it's that surprising that they decided to make it online, I think it makes sense for even the old games. Sure, there are literally millions of systems to travel to, but you always start in a few specific locations. And even in the old games, chances were that you'd find particular trade routes you'd want to repeat, which meant that you'd stay in one area for a while. And I doubt I was the only one who played the old games and thought "I wanna travel to Earth!" So I think there's plenty of reasons for players to encounter eachother.

And another thing, David Braben promised they'd release server software if they take down the servers. As long as he wasn't lying, that means the game will stay playable one way or the other.

He also promised that Elite Dangerous would ship with a complete offline mode. I'm not sure David is as trustworthy as nostalgia would like to have him be.

I hope the launch does go smoothly though. After the offline shitstorm that he started and the subsequent bad press, a Simcity 2013 style launch would be devastating to the game.
