Gematsu: Sony to hold Playstation Experience event in December

Why would Activision sell it?
A dead franchise that would be extremely difficult for them to revive on their own without completely fouling the IP. It would cost a fair bit and would be risky to pull out; would be hard to predict the success of Skylanders design working with Crash in some way.
Also, money. If Sony offered $500m for example, that is a large cashflow with no effort but laying on a dead IP.

Why would sony spend 10s of millions buying it when it wouldnt sell that much anyway?
That's purely conjecture that it wouldn't sell much. With a sufficient marketing campaign, a brand new Crash Bandicoot on PS4 could sell a lot of units worthy to justify a large cost to acquiring the IP, especially at Christmas time aimed towards the family market, which Sony plans to target more towards in 2015. The brand recognition for Crash Bandicoot always reminds people of the PSone days and Sony were keen to push that during the PlayStation Meeting in February 2013 when they announced the PS4; this experience event is definitely giving me vibes of that too after Sony posted the Vine's of the PS1 and PS2 bootup screens with sounds and the picture of the PS1 memory cards with #memories.

Who would even make it? Everyone from that era of Naughty Dog is DEAD no longer with the company.
That's not to say another creative team at Naughty Dog couldn't create it, but want to know whom I think would be second best? Media Molecule.

Edit: Just to add one more thing. Naughty Dog did give a nod to Crash Bandicoot in their Uncharted 4 trailer with the animation, and the narration by Sully could be referring to both Uncharted 4 story, or doing a Crash Bandicoot "...one last time, for old times sake".
Eh, I can't buy into this. Any return of Crash on PS would probably be a downloadable title made by a smaller team. I can't see a big team taking this on. The best fit in terms of pedigree and size is probably Sucker Punch, and I doubt Sony is going to pull them off the Infamous train given what a solid start they have on PS4 with I:SS (the next game could be something special).

So I don't see them spending tons of cash to pay Acti for such a risk. Nostalgia is strong with many of us here but the average PS4 owner was probably doesn't care or remember.

The most probable scenario I see is Sony offering some dev support and co-marketing money to Acti for a smaller digital title exclusive to PS4. If such a game does well, it could lead to a bigger sequel. Not terribly exciting but much more realistic.

I've been keeping track since I woke up, the hype is too real. Luckily its the holidays so I can lounge around and read the thread when I want to!

Sony paying half a billion dollars for Crash? That would never happen. And if Acti had Skylanders-esque aspirations for the IP long term, it's worth more than half a billion dollars anyway.

half a billion dollars for a franchise that is dead in the eyes of activision?

its like in football. you have player who only sits on the bench and as a coach you dont have any use for him.
So would you really ask a big amount of money for a player like that? or would you rather try to find a price which makes both sides happy?

Why are you guys talking about Crash Bandicoot

what year is this

It seems some people are speculating (and some are hoping) for a new Crash game to be announced at the event. I don't really see an audience for those games in those days unless its a downloadable title and costs as much as indie games.

This is easily the least probable scenario. Sony will never, ever make a game they don't own again, especially Crash. Why do I have to keep saying this? Crash is the reason they demand IP ownership. No way on earth will they settle for co development unless they get a permanent for all time exclusivity deal. No. They buy the franchise (possible but unlikely) or they don't do anything.

You don't know what Acti intends for the franchise. I'm sure you would have said the same thing about Spyro before it was rebooted and became a huge success for Acti. Not currently using the IP does not mean they consider it dead. Acti bleed IPs dry then replace them, once Skylanders has run it's course, Crash could very well be next.

Terrible analogy. A football player in the bench that does nothing is still getting paid and costing a team money. An IP costs nothing to sit on it and every so often renew a trademark. In the meanwhile, even small sales of previous content are giving you some money. The fact that Activision can set a high price and if Sony says no, it's no skin off Activision's ass means that Sony is going to get screwed if they try and but it out.

I can see Crash coming back to Sony as a huge deal. Don't see how some people think no one would care, like every Sony fanboy grew up with Crash and Spyro.

Not even that. The people who grew up with Crash are now old enough to have kids of their own.

That's better marketing.

Do you guys believe Guerilla Games or Santa Monica will reveal their new games? I'm a bit split on it, wouldn't be surprised if they save that for E3 2015 but on the other hand this is a perfect time to reveal something big and new if it's ready to be shown.

Most definitley do I think that Guerrilla Games' new game will be there. Even though they came off of Shadowfall recently all hints point to them being there: Notebook video with robot dinosaur and them being at the show not showing anything about Killzone.

Haha, these threads always come down to Crash, don't they?

I know Reddit and GAF have huge Crash fever, and I do think that Crash can be successfully revitalized for PS4.

But I just don't know at what cost.

I can really see a boost in the way Sony advertises and sells PS4s if Crash comes back, but I wonder why/how much Activision would give it away for.

Only a idiot would pay 500mil for a license. You pay that much money and you dont have a game. You still need to develop the game

They could do a ton of new games, sequels and collaborations for half a billion that would far exceed what Crash would do for them.

Hell, they could buy the majority stake in Capcom for that much.

Well Spyro hopes have been dashed against the rocks of skylanders.....and Crash has been quiet for years.....

People are overestimating the impact Crash would have as an announcement. I'm not feeling it at all. Hope is something else.

I think GAF would certainly crash for Crash.

I don't think Sony will ever fully own Crash again, unless it was a damn good price which we know Activision and that's not likely.

However, I think Crash could still live with some Sony backing.

EDIT: There was a lot of noise here and on Reddit when Sony put out that easter egg and Crash glitched it's way out of Universal's website.

Nevertheless if they dont plan anything with the franchise, its still better to sell it than do nothing

Im talking about the IF Scenario; So IF Activision doesnt plan with Crash anymore, i dont think they would demand a huge Offer from Sony.
Also Sony and Activision intensified their partnership over the last years. That could also be a key aspect

cancelling all of your Crash Projects and making statements like this

The game needs to have a really good reason to exist," he said, before adding "Fan support is not enough to get a game made on the level that you're looking for." He concluded with, "Now is not the right time for Crash Bandicoot... Will he ever come back? I have no idea."

dont give me the feeling, that Acitivision has any plans with crash

I guess I can't laugh at the Crash fantasies.

In my head I think to myself of how Sony can get back Spyro:
SONY: Hey Activision, Skylanders is pretty popular!

ACTIVISION: Thanks, Sony!

SONY: Yeah... you know, it has really evolved to something much bigger and further from Spyro the Dragon. In fact, you don't even USE "Spyro" in your advertisement of Skylanders. Skylanders...Spyro... It's like two different things now!

ACTIVISION: Hmmm... you're right. It's like two different IPs that don't even overlap each other, and really, we don't even need to use Spyro anymore. Hey Sony?

SONY: Yeah, Acti?

ACTIVISION: We're not really using Spyro anyway, and Skylanders is its own thing... Do you want Spyro back?

SONY: Yeah, sure!

ACTIVISION: Okay ^_^

Why couldn't Activision loan out the IP and allow Sony to make a Crash game in exchange for a cut of the sales?

Could, but then Sony runs the risk of making Crash popular and watching Activision release subsequent titles on competing platforms. Sony does not want to see that ever happen again.

Do Mario games sell as downloadable titles? Crash IS playstations Mario

That's true. Seems like the stumbling block would be Sony rather than Activision in that scenario.

Has to be cost effective, but this sounds like the only plausible plan of action.

Or you can get a degree in gaming/business, work your way up through the ranks until you become the CEO of Activision corp., then give the Crash IP to Sony.
