so i tried the trick of snapping a picture of both the gamepad and my TV to determine its latency, and my TV was at a difference of two milliseconds with the time on the gamepad

so what exactly is my TV's latency? is it alright? :p

Gamepad has about 1 frame of lag when not in Virtual Console mode. Your TV seems to have either 1 or 2 frames of lag which is pretty great.

Virtual Console games (at least the NES and SNES) have increased latency for no apparent reason.

So what's the consensus on a tier list. Anyone have a link? I ask because I have decided to main Bowser, and everyone keeps telling me he might be the worst character in the game. I guess I love bottom tier characters...lol

It's far too early for anyone to make a tier list, so don't worry about it.

Don't worry. What I've been told Bowser is far from bottom tier. He might actually be mid tier now.

No way Bowser is the worst character in the game. Not even close.

Everyone's entitled to their controller of choice, of course, and yes, the Pro Controller is a lovely controller, but the GameCube controller really is the best pad for Smash, objectively. The Pro Controller crowd who says that we only love the GC pad "because we grew accustomed to it over the years" are kidding themselves, really.

First of all, the GC pad has a better primary analogue stick. It doesn't feel as loose as the Pro Controller's sticks; it gives slightly more resistance which really helps with pulling off consistent tilts, for instance.

But, secondly, and more importantly: the button layout is highly superior. The large A button seems made for Smash, and the smaller B button is placed perfectly to the left of it. Finally, the kidney-shaped X and Y button are placed nicely on the upper edges of the A button, placing them in such a way you can easily use them to jump without accidentally pressing an attack button. It really is perfection.

And then there's the triggers, which you may not like as much as the simpler shoulder buttons of the Pro Controller when it comes to functionality, but the way your index fingers can rest on them is sublime and beyond comfortable.

Again, the Pro Controller is a lovely pad, but the sticks are too loose for my taste (almost approaching Dual Shock sticks) and, more importantly, the face buttons feel almost like an afterthought if you look at where they're placed, how close together they are, and where the A & B and X & Y buttons are located.

By all means, get yourself a Pro Controller, but if you're serious about Smash, do yourself a favor and get yourself a Cube controller. I have four Cube controllers and two Wavebirds, and I'll never part ways with them, ever.

Any tips on KOing the rival 4 times in rival smash? I got close, but what character might be easiest to KO?

Honestly, whoever is your best character. I did it with Link since his up tilt KOs everything in one hit and you can keep your rival at bay with projectiles.

Some of the retained Brawl mechanics always surprise me in this game, since didn't play Brawl as much as Melee.

One big is the footstool jump, jumping off enemies, I can't tell you how many times that has killed me in FFA.

Finally got my copy and tried online for a bit... was playing "for fun" but ran into a bit of lag. Better than Brawl but still not ideal. Think this will be fixed? Are you guys experiencing lag as well? My connection is one of the top in the country (Optimum Online, graded A by the speed testers). I'm really hoping that this game will bring all my college friends back playing this game, even though we're now all over the country... Brawl's horrible online was such a disappointment.

From what I can tell, all it takes is one bad connection to ruin everything. I played three "for fun" FFA matches with the same group and it was great. But as soon as one of them dropped and someone else came in, it started lagging really, really bad. After any laggy match, I just hop out/rejoin and hope for the best.

If you are playing with friends, it probably won't be much of an issue since you will know what kind of connections they've got.

Questions:

What tips do you guys have for 1v1 matches? I keep getting beaten by players that clearly know what they're doing, and I get matched with these kind of people at least 8/10 times. The raging just doesn't stop, lol.

Is there general advice for learning how to play better, or does that dive into character specifics? If it's the latter, I play as Ness and Luigi for 1v1 matches and Ike for 4 player matches. I tend to switch to different characters depending on who I feel like playing as, though.

What is the best button config to use for the gamecube controller? I noticed people like to use buttons to jump instead of tapping the stick, so I was curious what stuff you guys like to change.

Also, does anyone find it annoying that if you're fighting in one direction, but then want to switch sides and then buffer up your next move, you still get stuck on that one side? For example, I'm fighting on one side with Little Mac and I want to switch sides and buffer his special move, but the side I'm buffering that move doesn't swap even though I tap the stick to the side I want to buffer the move on. It seems to happen quite often.

Quick question: for challenge 15, do you have to collect 300,000 gold throughout the game regardless of how/when you spend it, or do you have to actually collect 300,00 gold and keep it with you?

I know, it's a blessing and a curse. I don't know how many times I've used it to get to a Smash Ball when going past someone.

I LOVE Smash 4. I think the only thing I really miss from Melee is the old air dodge and chain recoveries. Being able to move in the air was way more useful than a single attack miss but otherwise following the same descent path, and I loved how chain weapons could latch onto the sides of stages. It made people like Samus/Link with a so-so recoveries have a really good ones once you mastered it

awesome to hear! i also had no idea about the increased latency in the virtual console games, i think i definitely noticed that last time i player super mario world on here which was a long while ago, that's pretty stupid :\

thanks for the help!

How the heck do you get to the Photo Studio? I can't find the menu option anywhere. Is it part of Games & More --> Vault --> Album? That's the only place I can't see because I don't have an SD card inserted. Which by the way is the dumbest thing. I have plenty of internal storage that the game just completely ignores. It's such a Nintendo thing to happen.

Might see one popping up once it releases in Europe.

Aye! If it doesn't, this will be the first game in two years that didn't show up a day before launch from there. I'd be surprised. It's coming to the office and I have Friday booked off, so fingers crossed!

Will you be playing online? If so, and if you don't mind do you want to play some time? Playing with UK folks is probably the most reliable way to get a decent game - I imagine playing US GAF will be a laggy mess.

You can still use the chains to grab the ledge from a distance. Or do you mean grabbing any wall?

I've mostly been playing 1v1 over wifi and haven't seen much lag there. However, the few FFA matches I played were pretty laggy.

Don't worry, I main Charizard and nobody play Charizard.
I'm playing for fun anyway :)

Ganondorf.

Side smash KOs very easily. Or you can just throw him off the edge and down spike. You can get your four KOs in practically a minute.

People telling you that are just wrong. Bowser is great and has been great since Day 1.

You gotta enter hoard and then there's an option on the gamepad.

Yeah you used to be able to grapple walls, not just ledges. As a Link main in Melee I have missed it dearly

I feel you, being able to go back from the bottom of fountain of dreams was pretty cool to pull off, that, his boomerang from 64 and the semi-spike on his spin attack from melee are the things I miss the most from previous entries

Wish there was a better way to see what stage you were going on in crazy orders. When they start adding more people it blocks it out, and getting team battle on Palutena's Temple is miserable.

For general improvements to my game I've been reading the stuff on the techniques page on the ssb wiki and then practicing the things I think would be the most useful over and over again in training mode until I have the mechanics down. From there I'm slowly trying to integrate them into my actual matches. For character specific advice I recommend reading the character forums on smashboards.

With the GC controller I think most people use the default button layout with stick jumping off. Personally I use the gamepad with default controls - stick jumping with shield assigned to ZL so I don't have to reach up to the shoulder buttons.

Full disclosure: I suck at Smash.

Not sure if it's known already, but if you want to turn around quickly after a dash you can buffer a pivot after the initial dash animation by doing a half circle motion. You can basically do anything after the pivot too and you won't get the skid animation for the turnaround

does anyone use Falco? I like to play kind of aggresive with him, since you can't lolLazorSpam anymore, also I like how Marth feels a lot better with a GC controller, totally gonna sub him again

I'm a Falco main. :) Yep, laser game is not what it used to be, but his new moves lend Falco well to close combat. Unfortunately I struggle to approach with him sometimes, but that's part of footsies. Falco is, in my opinion, the most neutral game oriented character in SSB4.

So, does anyone wanna play for a bit? I'm looking to work on my mains and try to figure out Wii Fit Trainer.
