It would be a fairly substantial upgrade with either cardI have a radeon 7950. Would going to a 290 or a GTX970 be a real improvement?

As for the kind of performance you can expect with Far Cry 4, benchmarks for preset graphics settings can be found here, about halfway down the page. Expect 30 frames per second on ultra and 60+ on low. Looking at performance videos on youtube, even outdated 7 year old Q6600 processors paired with the GTX 750 Ti still manage 30fps on ultra settings on 1080p, although I figure that's because Far Cry 4 is well optimized for Nvidia cards and doesn't rely on the CPU very much. Other games will differ.
Yep. Because a CPU upgrade would require a new motherboard, the added cost means that it's cheaper to try overclocking first.

The Ares sticks don't have the big heatspreaders. I think you had a Hyper 212 Evo listed in your build, in that case those would probably be best, otherwise the RAM might get in the way of the fan (though you can mount the fan a bit higher to make it fit.).
Thank you for that. The 750ti is currently on slickdeals for $90. I think I may pick it up. Just need to decide if I should just upgrade the psu instead and get a different gpu. $90 is quite tempting though.
Could I get a better GPU AND power supply for around $200? If not I will likely stick with the Ti.

The first and third in that comparison are overpriced. Here, G.Skill Ripjaws X 16GB DDR3-2400 for $130, 1.65v and large heatspreaders. There's also this, Patriot Viper 3 low profile 16GB DDR3-2400 for $137, 1.5v and small heatspreaders so as to not interfere with CPU coolers.
Otherwise, if you care more for capacity and less about speed, there's Team Group branded 16GB DDR3-1600 for $105. They're not as well known as G.Skill, but they do offer limited lifetime warranty and that product has good reviews, if not many.

The XFX TS 550 watts for $45 after $10 mail in rebate, and the Asus R9 280X for $160 after $30 mail in rebate. I can't find any tests or benchmark results for Far Cry 4, but the 280 should perform a bit better than the 270X as shown on the website benchmarks I linked you to. Youtube videos seem to show 50-60+ frames per second on very high, probably around 45 frames per second on ultra.
Well, 80 degrees is right at the limit for what is too much for a GTX 980. Maybe you need a stronger front intake fan blowing cool air toward the video cards.

Well, this is my build so far I'm not sure if the fan will be a problem but I have been told to go with a low profile ram to make sure of that.

What's the cards fan speed when it gets that hot? Have you set a manual fan curve?
I'd get a cheaper ssd, drop the 980 for two 970s and go for a Korean 1440p monitor. That motherboard and psu are both too expensive and overkill
I have the same cooler and my RAM isn't low profile (Corsair Vengeance Pro) so I had to mount the fan a bit higher. It works, but in hindsight I should have gone with low profile as well. So it's not a complete deal breaker.

The MX100 has a slight lead over the M550 in most benchmarks, and is $40 cheaper to boot. Can't really see a reason to pick the M550.

Are you using msi after burner? I'd give that a shot.
Board and power supply you've already chosen would work perfectly. There really isn't a ton of extra setup.

Alright guys, need some assistance for Xmas. I'm going to build my father a PC for his present. He's not a gamer at all. He uses his PC for streaming sports (NHL, MLB and such), browsing, some light work and mainly relaxing. The kicker is he will be using two monitors (and we're not hurting for those at the moment) and he requires wifi. His office is not one we can run cat cables to.
I currently have a nice case, hard drive and a power supply (460W). I need this to be simple, affordable (not breaking the bank here) but able to meet his two monitor and wifi needs.
Any suggestions?

Do you have a budget in mind? This won't really cost much. Do you already have the monitors? What model are they, or what inputs do they take?
This is already overkill. Could easily go for a cheaper CPU and motherboard combo. The motherboard has one each of D-Sub, DVI-D, and HDMI.
It wouldn't cause any trouble at all, just make sure you get a big enough power supply up front so you don't have to upgrade it later.

I run the Heaven test and I can no longer break the 50 overall fps barrier. While prior to that I got 53 fps with hardly increasing anything. It also doesn't matter what the score is whether I overclock or not. What exactly has happened.
The only thing that has changed with PrecisionX16 is that there is now a "priority" tab.
Could I have damaged my video card while overclocking it? I never messed with the voltage and I don't recall the temps ever passing 85c.

Heres some tips
Use the OSD - This will help you work out and track your GPU overclock vs performance. it can display the actual clock speeds and temperatures while you bench.
That will tell you exactly if the card is throttling or not. For example raising the clocks and seeing no difference - That could be because the card is running too hot, at ~68c it has a first stage throttle.
Or noticing that the clocks defaulted to stock - this can happen if the card was unstable and the driver reset. You have to change either clock speed by 1mhz to re-engage the overclock.
Priority is probably Temperature Vs Power Target.
I was planning on picking up the corsair hx850. Do you think that's enough power?

OCD is usually on. It says the temperature doesn't go that high.
That being said I do notice that when I retest the FireStrike benchmark performance is usually lower.
I think I'll do more testing tonight or tomorrow morning.
What do you mean by first throttle? Sorry but I'm new to GPU overclocking.

Everything is fine but the noise of the fan, holy shit, its taking away so much from the experience, I set the fan to keep the GPU below 75C no matter what, so the thing naturally sounds like a vacuum.
How do you guys deal with that, noise cancelling headphones?

Here's some revised parts. I forgot to include the wifi requirement last time around. Pick which one of the two adaptors you'd prefer, USB or internal.

These GPUs down clock after a certian temperature regardless of your Temperature Target (which can be set up to 91c). At around 68c the card down clocks a little. And downclocks further as temps rise.
Just watch the clock speeds in OSD. GPU overclocking is pretty simple. Clocks, voltage and temps is all you need to watch.
What are your core and memory clock speeds (not offsets).
