Yeah I tried pushing to 4.7 and could boot to desktop but when I loaded games my PC would crash. Checked heat and that wasn't the issue. I think if I would mess with the voltage more I could have gotten 4.7ghz but it would be a lot of effort and I felt fine with 4.6 ghz.
Have you actually stress tested with something like Aida64?
Are you manually setting the VCore? Otherwise the BIOS will jack up Vcore to silly amounts.
Thanks for the response.
Any recommended laptop brands? My wife is eyeing up an HP touchscreen laptop. Isn't HP notorious for adding a lot of bloatware?
Would love to get a Surface Pro 3 personally, but they seem ridiculously expensive and have such pathetic storage (64GB really?)
Laptops are so overpriced compared to desktops, ugh.
Hynix is supposed to begin HBM production in Q1 2015, so I don't think 380X/390X will release before that. Now that it's leaked it's probably around 2 months away or so.
Cross-posting from the 970 thread.. still scratching my head:
Having some trouble diagnosing why I'm getting some sub-60 fps drops, as well as a 30 fps lock while playing WoW and watching a Twitch stream:
http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...ps0b2d4de7.jpg
(This above link is a shot of playing WoW in the garrison while a Twitch video was streaming)
My CPU is a i7-930 OC'd to ~3.1 GHz with 6 GB of RAM. Both of these were first bought in July of 2010, which I've since replaced my old ATI HD 5850 with the EVGA GTX 970.
WoW was running ~50 fps in the screen-cap, but sometimes I've noticed it hard capping at 30fps randomly, then suddenly it will shift to 60 fps. Really strange. Maybe the hard drive is starting to wear down?? Or am I just being overly picky for the performance I am getting with what I am doing?
For those of you who pay attention to cases like I do.....
....or for anyone doing a mid-range build, focused on silence or potential water cooling...
....it looks like the Fractal Define R5 is a winner!!! Very exciting! Modular drive cages and optical bays, good wire management room, great rad support, good looks.

Hi guys, I would like an opinion on my current rig:
CPU i5 2500k
R9 290 4Gb
Ram 8Gb DDR 3 1600mhz
MB: MSI Z77A-G43
Win 7 OS on SSD (Crucial M4)
PSU: 650W
I like to game at 1080p and trying to reach a minimum of 40fps in most games and trying to hit high or ultra settings. I assume my CPU or RAM is holding my system back and would like opinions if its worth me doing a minor upgrade?
RAM Should I purchase RAM and pick two more 4Gb sticks that run at DDR 3 2400mhz?
COOLER Or should I pick up a aftermarket air cooler for my CPU and overclock it to get more power out of it?
CPU Is it worthwhile for to upgrade to an i5 4690? Toms hardware CPU Gaming Hierarchy chart says its not worth it. This is not a minor upgrade and would require a new motherboard.
Been lurking here for a while, looking to build a PC over the next couple of months and would appreciate any advice. It'd be my first build.
Current specs: Non-existent
Budget: UK £550-600
Main Use: Light gaming 4, Video & photo editing 5, General Usage 5.
Monitor Resolution: In the market for a full 1080 HD 24+ monitor that'd fit my main uses, and I'd like it to come under the budget but I believe that might be impossible. Would be looking for a 2 monitor set up in the future for editing.
List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well: Must be able to run Photoshop, Premiere Pro & After Effects. Need it for university paper writing and general usage too. Gaming wise, I'd be playing nothing too demanding, it'd be nice to be able to run some new releases on medium settings but I'm not too bothered as I'll be getting a next gen console at some point to play with friends. Got a backlog of old PC stuff that anything I get should hopefully be able to run (more specifically, the GTX 680 / 750 or equivalent has been what I've been going with so far, totally open to change and advice)
When will you build?: Next month / January but I'm not against the idea of pre-built machines if somebody could point me in the right direction. Especially since I won't be re-using any ports or a monitor or anything.
Will you be overclocking?: Would I be a fool not to?
I'm a bit of a noob at this, going to be looking into the memory / storage specs best for video editing so if anybody could spare any advice on that it'd be greatly appreciated. Also, would i3 / budget AMD processors suit my needs and keep me right for a couple of years? i5 possible on my budget? Thanks in advance, thread has been a great help so far.
Hi guys
Would love some input on a build I'm looking at
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/LLsYwP
Main Use: Gaming at 1080P (downsampling when I can) and Emulators. Would love to be able to lock the newest games at 1080P/60... I realize that might not be entirely realistic but I do have plans to SLI in the future.
I'm aware of the current states of games like AC Unity, FC4 etc. I follow almost all of the individual PC perf threads for new games so I know some current games are bringing even >$2K rigs to their knees.
Monitor: 1080P Panasonic Plasma
Deadline: Not one currently, will patiently wait for deals on the parts I want but I already have the Samsung SSD on the way and will be picking up the 4790K for ~$110 from the intel retail edge deal (5930K didn't seem worth another ~$130 for gaming?). Those are the only choices that are somewhat locked.
Overclocking: Maybe? (Yes) Never done it before, but will if it makes sense performance wise.
I've left off memory as I really am not picky I guess? I figured 16 GBs of whatever is reasonable perf/price. I've read that this has less impact than it used to comparing brand to brand?
Biggest caveat. I would like to do this (even SLI?) in an HTPC case as I want to put the whole rig in a TV stand. Really hoping no one has to crush that dream...
Currently moving off:
i7 940
HX620 PSU
GTX 780 SC w/ ACX
500GB WD Black
12GB DDR3
Thanks so much for any insight and advice you guys can offer. Truly appreciate that there's a resource like this available.
<3 GAF
HAhAHA. It finally boot. Thanks. hehehe.. I am a super noob about this. I got no time to install OS since I gotta work but question. I got no cable to connect wired internet but I got wireless dongle (new one) which I connect to the USB port. I can still get internet, right?
X-posting from the gamig laptop ot.
Hey GAF, I'm still thinking about gettin the Y50 change its screen and then change the HDD for a SSD.
The problem is I was going to get this SSD: Samsung 850 Pro 256GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-7KE256BW)
But I saw this SSD at a very nice price:
Samsung 840 Pro 512GB 2.5-Inch SATA 6Gbps Solid State Drive (MZ-7PD512BW)
But I don't get why the price is lower, is there any issue with that SSD that I should know?
Someone else can give more specific advice, but I'd look into a better power supply and a more modern case.Hey everyone, I'm trying to build my first PC using parts from Microcenter and Newegg Black Friday sales.
How's it look? After all the sales, I think I can shave off around $150 so I can get a decent monitor. But I'd really like to know if I'm making any horrible mistakes before I dive in on Friday.
What games are you playing?
Have you checked RAM usage while playing games? if you're not hitting high usage, then I wouldn't bother adding more memory. Adding DDR3-2400 won't be a good idea for two reasons. If you mix it with the DDR3-1600 already in your computer, it will all run at the lower 1600MHz. If you remove the older 1600MHz ram, then higher clocked memory still doesn't do much to improve framerate when using discrete graphics anyway, according to Anandtech's testing.
The i5 2500k can still be a potent processor. I assume you haven't overclocked it - for a relatively low cost, you can get more performance out of it by overclocking, you just need to have a decent CPU cooler. There are many guides out there. What's your budget for a new cooler?
I don't recommend a CPU (and motherboard upgrade) either. You'd be paying a lot ($300+) for a moderate CPU power upgrade, and you could get similar gains by just buying a CPU cooler for $30-100 and overclocking.
Here's a starting build to work from. Unfortunately I'm not clear on UK pricing, so assume my parts aren't sales prices. If you see any deals that are cheaper than the price of the parts I've listed, then they might be worth considering.
Yeah, doesn't seem like I'll be able to fit the monitor in under the budget. Compared to US prices.. things are a bit high.
I recommend the Corsair H105 over the H100i. If you want to go compact, then I recommend an mATX motherboard and case. That Corsair PSU is overpriced for now, there are better deals like this fully modular gold rated EVGA Supernova G2 750 watt for $100. For 850 watts, there's the Antec HCG M for the same price, although it's bronze rated and only partly modular.
Here's my take on your build. All that's missing is a case. Or you can go with the much more cost effective solution that LilJoka helpfully made three build lists for.
Great to hear that you got it up and running. yes, you'll be able to connect to a wifi network with a wireless dongle. Make sure to install the drivers, a fresh Windows install probably won't have drivers for the USB dongle.
The memory on that list has large parts sticking out up top that will interfere with the CPU cooler. I recommend G.Skill Ares 8GB DDR3-1866 for $60.Hey everyone, I'm trying to build my first PC using parts from Microcenter and Newegg Black Friday sales.

For the right price, high speed RAM is an easy buy. It's been pretty easy to find 2x8GB of 1866MHz to 2400MHz on sale for less than $140 USD.RAM speed certainly does effect certain games. Battlefield 4 seems to really love high speed ram. I would take the h100i over the h105 any day. Corsair link is enough for me to choose the h100i.

As for the water cooler, the H100i is reported to have issues with backplate mounting that can cause high temperatures if incorrectly done. Not a deal breaker, but a cause for concern. Corsair Link can be handy, but the H105's thicker radiator (permitting mounting room in the case) and slightly lower price make it a better recommendation to me.
Trying to pick a CPU for my girlfriend's build. She doesn't use it for too much, internet, youtube, maybe some music, perhaps some very light gaming she says. Obviously an i3 would be fine for her for now but I wonder if I should just go for an i5 for longevity.
She doesn't even have a desktop right now so I doubt she will upgrade it over time aside from maybe my hand-me-downs. Any thoughts? Thanks.
This seems like a pretty good deal.. is this card pretty similar to a 970 in terms of performance? Because I'm looking at getting a new card and the 970 all seem to be in the $350 range, where the price of that 290 is more appealing.
I'd honestly just spend the extra money and get a new one. I'm pretty sure there are 120gb ssds going for about the same price as that refurbLooking to very slowly start building a new PC. I'd like to start with an SSD as I could use it now with my current PC, before I have all the other components.
Thoughs on this refurb corsair?

Hmm, looks like I was wrong, I wasn't looking at mail in rebates. The H105 is on sale for $95 at NCIX US, while the H100i currently goes for $100 but can have a $20 mail in rebate applied.Where is the h105 cheaper? Refurb h100i goes on sale for 65 all the time. Amazon(iirc) had the h100i on sale for 80. I don't think the h105 offers enough cooling benefit over the h100i for most people that it's worth losing link over.

Idle temps are probably fine depending on ambient, what are your load temps?Ok after installing everything on the software side. Can you tell me if my temps are normal for this build on idle?
http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Paolo11/saved/7K62FT
Core 1 35
Core 2 37
Core 3 32
Package 37
Core Voltage varies from 1.21 to .77 v
GPU (SLI Cards 980 GTX)
Between 50 then it lowers to 45 then if installing it rises up to 50 (currently at 44 as we speak)

You don't want to cheap out on the power supply. I recommend the XFX TS 550 Watt PSU for $55, it's manufactured by Seasonic, so it's excellent quality.
Is that the case you want? Any specific features you're looking for?
No problem. Ripjaws is popular RAM that can be found for low prices, but the metal heatspreaders do take up a lot of space, that's all. You could still use it with the CPU cooler, you'd just have to mount the fan higher, out of the way.Not really, I just picked a decent looking case I saw in the ad. I'm really not looking anything specific.
But thank you for the links! I just picked the RAM because I saw a lot of suggestions for it, and the power supply was suggested by another friend.

does anyone know if there will be black friday/cyber monday deals on either the 980 or 970?

OK I just started playing AC Unity. CPU were below 50 degrees but GPU 1 is between 79 to 80 (max is 81) and GPU 2 is 68 SLI. Is this normal?
I'm guessing GPU 2 is dumping hot air onto GPU 1?
I am thinking of replacing my aging 2006 era PC with a more modern build, can you guys give me some advice as to how this build looks for gaming purposes primarily (1080p) and possibly future-proofing as much as possible?
Yeah, prices are changing kind of frequently now with sales lasting just a few days. To be clear, that RAM runs on 1.65V, so make sure to check compatibility.FML I just ordered 16GB of 1866 two days ago. Hope Newegg has a good return policy.
Are you going to be reusing any parts from your old PC? The Define R5 is now out, it's a great improvement over the R4 but does cost $120-130. I think it could be in your budget if you're going to spend $1000 on a new PC.

As for the case, if you wanted to save money, look at the Corsair 200R for $50. Smaller, but still functional. The Fractal Define R4 is available for $70 and emphasizes silence.
The Antec 900 isn't a bad case, though. I wonder what version it is, there's newer V2 and V3 versions, but those are normally called Antec Nine Hundred Two.
Are you using that for gaming? If you switch to an i5 and spend the extra $100 on a better video card you'd get far better gaming performance
