Isn't like having the hilt would have helped them much in the situations they both (Luke and Anakin) got their hands maimed.

Hayden is reacting too soon to the hit. Feels weird. never noticed it til now.

Man, seeing these GIFs of the prequels is making me more pumped for this movie. It already looks so much better than them visually. I'm talking not just the visual effects, but that seen of the Sith stumbling through the snow. Seeing a character walk through what looks like a real set is so refreshing.

I don't remember the particulars of the fight, but it looks like Dooku is throwing a little Force push into Anakin to knock his arms away so he can swing in under the blade. In which case, Hayden's reacting to the push, not the hit.

The Good:
- Black lead. Pretty ballsy of Disney. I applaud.

The Bad:
- The seemingly slavish devotion to the originals. It's supposed to be about 50 years after the OG trilogy. Why the heck are X-Wings and the Millennium Falcon still a thing? What the hell are stormtroopers still around for? Why are we back on Tatooine? Because nostalgia pandering, that's why.
- That shot of the Falcon is a less convincing vfx shot than a great deal of the ones in the original trilogy. The sense of weight and movement just isn't believable, and makes me fear Abrams' typical over-stylized bullshit is going to result in action scenes that are little more than a mess of blur and color like the Star Trek films.

One thing I'll say is that its weird that NONE of the Star Wars trailer takes place in space. Not even a "planet scroll".

Closer to our 30 years. If it was 50 it would be a bit hard to have Hamill and friends reprise their roles.

It's 30 years since the OT.

And the X-Wings and Falcon and Stormtroopers are still around because...why wouldn't they be? The Empire didn't die off overnight (it spans an entire galaxy; plenty of real life, and significantly smaller, governments continued fighting for years/decades after losing their main figurehead), and the Rebels aren't going to dump everything they've ever owned just because they won the fight in Jedi.

It's not like they're carbon copies either, the X-Wings and trooper outfits are both modified from the OT versions.

First, 30 years. Second, those are new X-Wings, not the same as OT. Third, I would have thought people knew nostalgia is key when they brought back the OT cast.

He definitely knocks anakin back, right after dealing with the problems at hand.

Here, best gif i could find.

I give you Tatooine MAYBE.
The point about "Why are there still FighterX or TrooperY 30 years after the last movie is wrong though.

Star Wars is a universe where technology has plateaued a long, long time ago. Even thousands of years ago the Sith empire in KOTOR uses similar ships/vehicles/uniforms/weapons.

And even if we would apply Earth technology progress levels of logic to this:
Ever flown with a 747? That shit has been flying since the 1960s. A-10? Design from the 60s. Apache design from the 70s.
So even in our universe, where we also see the beginnings of technology advancement slowing down, 30-50 years is not an issue.
And X-Wings/Tie-Fighters etc seem to have gotten upgrades, even though the height of the Empire/Alliance is behind them.

One thing I'll say is that its weird that NONE of the Star Wars trailer takes place in space. Not even a "planet scroll".

I know...

We need a trailer that shows us the epic nature of the Republics Space fleet. Show me large ass ships!

I know a lot of people are bummed about x-wings but my hype was real seeing them.

The X-Wings are a new design. Think like cars. The Corvette has been around for nearly 70 years, but they change the look.

And the Falcon because it's the Millennium Fuck You Falcon.

Nah, it's just another example of a slowed-down looping animated gif being used to highlight a tiny flaw in stunt-timing and blow it up so it appears way more goofy than it actually is when seen at 24fps with accompanying sound-effects in context of the movie surrounding it.

See: that stupid fucking Dark Knight Rises gif, which is worse because it purposefully cuts the frame in half.

This movie is going to be awesome. I can already tell the action is going to be a major step up from the prequels thanks to JJ. I never thought I'd say this, but I think I'm actually more hyped for this than Avengers: AoU.

The SW universe has always worked different than ours, in terms of tech. Did you know the Old Republic game takes place 3,500 years before the events in the Star Wars films? Yet, things look pretty much the same by the time Luke Skywalker comes around.

I never noticed that before. It pretty much looks like he reacted well before he actually got hit. Wow.

first of all, it's 30 years, afaik.

secondly, you know what's still in service? the F-16 fighting Falcon, ... it's been in service since 36 years now.

also those X-Wings are heavily modified. Their S-foils have undergone a massive re-design.
Do you expect the Incom Corporation (the company who makes the T-65 X-wing fighter) to entirely re-invent their best selling model?

this might be an iterative improvement. Just like the AK74 to the AK47.

Perhaps because Star Wars has been such a huge factor for almost two and a half generations of people.

My daughter is only 19 months old so she is still too young for the hype train. But I am training her and getting her read for the 8th movie. Her and her little stuffed Jawa buddy go everywhere together... got to start them young.

Yep, the x-wings are very different (semi-circular engine intakes, s-foils are split so the upper ones are aft of the lower ones, so that when closed they form one thin wing instead of stacking like the old ones, plus they're sleeker).

The Falcon is there because it's Han's ship. I can't see him getting rid of it even after 30 years.

The Tie Fighters look the same, but there may be differences that are just not apparent in the teaser.

I just want to say that I'm FUCKING EXCITED FOR THIS MOVIE AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHBUNDUUURUURURURURUUR

Revisiting Tatooine again is something I'm ok with.
Luke said "if there is a bright center of the universe, this place is as far away from it as you can be" and you could argue that it makes the universe so damn small that shit is happening there so often..
but if you look at Afghanistan for example: Total backwater country that "nobody ever heard of" before the invasion of the Soviets in the 80s and the shit is still going on there, even 40 years after the initial push onto the world stage.

In the case of Star Wars, both Vader and Luke grew up there, so it is natural that one of Leia's or Luke's offspring might want to dive into the family legacy and live there.

Are those emitters? Or just coverings for the beams? Think about it.

Also, Grievous lost a hand that could have been saved by a crossguard. And even if he hadn't, that doesn't mean it's never happened before in all the thousands of years of Star Wars history. Or do you think that only things that have been shown in the older movies can happen in the newer ones. Then what would be new about them?

If they are just coverings for the beams then I guess we have to assume it is saber resistant material. Otherwise you'd have to constantly repair the thing after a sword fight. So I hold to the point that the hilt should just be made of saber resistant material to begin with.
As for the hand cutting off thing, I was more commenting on those people stating that if others in the movies had hilts there would be less amputations when there is no movie correlation. I'm sure many a Jedi probably could have benefitted from a hilt. I just don't like this design for my perceived impracticality.

I really would have preferred a saber with some some sort of brass knuckle type hand guard for punching fools in the face with. I'd even be fine with little tiny light saber spikes emitting from it. Like a porcupine. And yes, I am kind of joking.

I love the irony of how key players in this story originate from such a seemingly empty, unassuming desert planet. Tattooine has always had a great air of mysticism surrounding it because of this, almost as if intentional in a spiritual kind of way. I'm glad they kept that angle.

Also there's no R2 co-pilot units on these new X-Wings.

"information" from leaks, not speculation in the spoiler:

there was a leaked aerial shot of an X-Wing that shows a round thingy on top of the fighter, you can find it here so i guess this is mostly just a perspective thing, or - these specific X-Wings don't have R2 units on board.

"Well, if there's a bright center to the universe, you're on the planet that it's farthest from." ;)

However, Tatooine's main role is the fact that it's where Shmi Skywalker lived as a slave.

Because of this:
* Anakin (her son) lived there
* Cliegg Lars married Shmi - Owen and Beru are Anakin's only relatives, which is why ...
* Luke is given to Owen and Beru, which is also why
* Obiwan Kenoby chooses Tatooine as his place of exile, so he can keep a watching eye over the boy growing up.

It's not some cosmic coincidence, in this case - it's a chain of events that boils down to "where Anakin's family lives"

The only part that isn't related to the Skywalker family tree is the fact that Jabba's palace is there, where frozen Han Solo would be taken.

I'm thinking that first shot in the trailer is possibly the first shot in the movie

After the scroll we move down into Tatooine/NotTatooine and the first thing we do is meet the confused, crashed stormtrooper who doesn't know where he is or what the fuck is going on

Maybe.

I'd love that. It would be very LOST.

I like the sound of that.

I dont know if people understand the difference between nostalgia and plot points for a sequel. This is a SEQUEL. It involves characters from the old movies not because of nostalgia but because they fit the story. And the story is about the Skywalker family, places they live and people they know will always be tied to it.
