I wasn't previously aware of the very, very racist parts of reddit.

How could you not notice? Reddit is a rascist, sexist, hateful place.

And I'm just talking about the default subs. Let's not even get to the sub reddits dedicated to hate and ignorance.

I still go there everyday :l

That's what I mean. I didn't know there were subreddits dedicated to such vitriol and hate.

the goal of reddit seems to be the 'internet's forum', so naturally it will be 90% noise. on the other hand, there are some good subs out there if you know where to look. still can't deal with comment nesting tho.
It's a pretty fucking stupid idea, because it means anything can exist despite the fact they can just slightly tighten up on enforcing some standards and stamping out dumb subreddits like that and telling people they aren't allowed to have a voice on reddit.

I mean the internet itself is a goddamn forum, I wish they would at least do people the courtesy of not having people stumble upon stuff like this on reddit.

Human beings are horrible, violent, hate-filled beings. So you'll find that stuff online.

The question is whether or not there's something noble in allowing people to congregate and find community around the worst aspects of themselves.

Is it better to let honest representations of humanity exist, as a kind of abstract idealism that "honesty" is an inherent good? Or is public space not supposed to simply reflect humanity - but is instead meant to act as a "healthily repressive" structure that deliberately suppresses the worst in us?

That's a complicated fucking question, because lots of those words are super loaded.
Businesses should be able to do whatever they want, but inaction is complicity, and that's how I judge Reddit.

Never ever say never ever

The only times I ever go to reddit are for oculus rift and elite dangerous stuff, and only because resources elsewhere for those specific things suck. So I'm a hypocrite, but I only go there, maybe like once every two months when I really need to find something. I'm not addicted like I am to neyogafe

I still browse a couple subs but I deleted my account several years ago and am not in the least tempted to sign up again.

I have no idea why reddit has a free speech policy.....allows hate groups to flourish
It truly doesn't, they censor a lot of things. Out of all these imageboard and imageboard-like places, it seems ∞ and Ponychan of all places have the most free speech.

You literally could probably hire half a dozen people to check newly created subreddits and shut down the ones that are clearly blatantly racist, sexist, smut, etc. but I guess "free speech".

They have fairly active white power neo nazi subs that are allowed to stay open I dont think they give a shit

Reddit is pretty cool if you avoid the bad subreddits. I don't think it's like 4chan at all, the entirety of 4chan feels like /pol/ to varying degrees IMO.

I'd rather that than a forum that censors anything that could be construed as offensive. All of the absurdly the offensive/illegal/disgusting stuff on reddit can't be found unless you're looking for it. I've been using reddit for years and didn't know about the cute female corpse subreddit that was mentioned here, because I would never look for that.

Any comment section or message board anywhere online is prone to dumbass racism. There's not much anyone can do about it

It's not even the back corners of reddit. It's the big subreddits, either in their posts or in the comments. The defaults have racist shit on them all the time

Well now that's just not true

The only place on reddit I visit daily is r/oculus, because it's actually a fun and informative subreddit about VR.

Most of the time, when I look at things on the front page, the top comment is always a joke, and every reply to it is always trying to branch off of that joke.

I really think the karma system is stupid.

Honestly, I pretty much hate reddit, and it's not just because of my love of Digg and Moot either.it just seems too... Corporationy and thinks too high of itself as a whole.

How? How could the Internet at large be completely rid of all racism and hate speech? Have ISPs monitor everything everyone does and send people fines for being an asshat online?

Reddit fucking sucks and if it weren't for the sports subreddits I wouldn't use it at all.

that said it's pretty much stormfront on most of the defaults. actually im pretty sure it is stormfront pushing their bullshit talking points a lot of the time and the rest of reddit feeds off it.

One of their admins even said they'd turn a blind eye to banning a subreddit as long as a hate subreddit keeps gilding comments, a while back.

They're letting actual hate groups linked to actual crimes use reddit to recruit into actual hate groups.

They have an actual strategy where someone will make a comment in a bigger default sub, then a bunch of them will gild the comment, so it looks like it's being upvoted.

How do other sites actually handle it? What happens to a racist blogs?

If you own your domain, you can do whatever you want. That's beauty and the beast of the internet.

Blogger and Wordpress.com need to be alerted to taken be down.

Youtube puts moderation at the responsibility of the channel owner.

The internet is great, for the people in charge of it. You have sites like stormfront and chimpout(Seriously) that are very focused on that and have many members. Then you have the "big" websites where the racism is just casual and everything is a "preference" or ideology not to be questioned. In many ways, the internet mimics real life. The same people clumping together, ostracizing others and engaging in the same disturbing behaviour and mentality. Just don't bother visiting those places, it's the only real option until the majority start to care to correct themselves. You're not going to change them.

No, censorship and giving them any attention at all is what allows hate groups to flourish. Don't give the crazy, evil people legitimacy by trying to silence them. It's better to let the jackasses have their say and everyone else with a working brain can ignore or mock them.

Seriously, just knowing that there are some people out there that would want the ISPs to censor content scares me; a free and open internet had a lot of stuff you don't like, but it is important.

This is coming from a Jew that is tired of hearing "gas the k*kes" on some of these places quite regularly. Even with these hateful comments, not seeing them on the Internet doesn't mean the sentiments will go away IRL, so why even think about censoring the net for the sake of, at the end of the day, pointless "protection"?

Its one thing to ignore, its another to give them a home of operations

ehh i dont really mind reddit. but i only browse /r/games, /r/gaming, /r/android, /r/steam and /r/gamedeals anyways

Did giving the KKK attention and focusing on them make them flourish or go in decline? Did passing laws stating that you cannot harass or reject service to someone because of their colour, not improve things? The majority never wants to correct themselves, it's too difficult. It also means accepting responsibility for the plight of others, instead of pretending that it has nothing to do with them. Or acknowledging the benefits or rather lack of humanity that it affords to be a part of the majority."Hi priviege". I used to be against the policing of the internet, I'm slowly warming up to it.

Unless previous posters haven't made it clear: you can't just "ignore" them. All the white power / hate group subreddits on Reddit actively attack users, game votes, and other activities on the default subreddits and small race-centered subreddits.

They even fucking bot the attacks now.

Gamergate illuminated me to a lot of the very real very disturbing subreddits. Makes me feel good about not really ever subscribing to Reddit in any meaningful way.
