Street Fighter 5 for PS4 & PC teaser trailer

They've gone and done it... they've gone and woke the sleeping dragon now.

Sony should have left well enough alone and now they're going to get it. It's not enough that they're bleeding benjamins from practically every crevice of their existence. Now they go and throw immense moneyhats at a niche game like Street Fighter just to piss off the market. Why pay to keep a game out of the hands of as many gamers as possible? Why not put that money into first-party studios and games instead?

I know, I know... this is the way the business goes as they say. Well, they forced Microsoft's hands with their early sales lead and Microsoft only responded with an NPD whooping (source: musings thread) by way of incredible deals and value. Microsoft will undoubtedly follow this announcement up with some real megatons of their own.

Gears remake collection. A true Banjo sequel. Halo 5 beta in the hands of gamers. The next Bayonetta, Dead Space and Crysis as exclusives. Those are the kinds of blockbuster response announcements I expect, and then some. You hit Microsoft with a jab, you best be ready for a flurry of uppercuts coming at you in response.

Seems to me like moneyhatting isn't always a bad thing...

In a situation where a game was already in development and most likely multiplat... then a publisher steps in with the moneyhat and bogards the game from it's competitors... thats BS. The exact kind of competition that hurts gamers rather than benefits.

But if its a situation where the developer cannot make the game because they either don't have the capital or the executives are unable to take the financial risk AND THEN a publisher steps in to help with funding in order for the game to get made. That's amazing and we should be thankful.

We've recently seen examples of both.

Let's take some time to get the facts straight and see which situation SFV falls into BEFORE people start crying bloody moneyhat foul.

lmao, you really think Capcom couldn't get the funding to make SFV?

but I didn't think they would actually go the exclusive route. don't care since I'm not into fighting games, but that's a decent grab.

Difference is Tomb Raider was announced as being multi-platform before mysteriously becoming an "exclusive" before it came out that it was only a timed "exclusive" while the whole time they were shady about admitting it.

I don't remember it being announced as multi-platform ever. any source?

As an owner of a PS4 and a lover of Street Fighter since the days of the Street Fighter II arcade version...I am beyond hyped.

God I suck so bad at this franchise but I can't help but fall in love with every iteration. Time for a new generation of me playing as Ken regardless of quality!

Consoles weren't used in tournaments at that point. Arcades still existed.

edit: things changed when the dreamcast was released, at least in the west

Oh yeah, forgot about the Arcade versions.

Sure wished that they would be more popular in this country again besides at Dave & Buster's/Jillian's nowadays. :(

I'm tempted to grab it on PC as well even though I have a PS4 (and Xbox One) although I believe the SF4 netcode sucked on PC correct? Or has that been fixed with Ultra?

It has recently but for the majority of the games lifespan, the PC version had the best netcode. Maybe they'll finally fix it when Omega comes out...

I thought salty Minecraft was a giveaway that I wasn't serious.

Just to clarify, I was joking.
I knew you were joking because MS makes money on Minecraft selling on all available platforms. The people falling for open_mouth's post is hilarious, though.

Not claiming it's absolutely the case with this game, but have you seen Capcom's ridiculous expectations for their games recently? I think it's possible they wouldn't greenlight SF5 without outside funding unless they could guarantee 10+ million copies sold or something.

It actually is now bad with Ultra, while it used to be good with AE 2014 the switch from GFWL to Steamworks seemed to fuck the whole thing up.

Wouldn't make sense to me based on how consoles are doing in Japan right now. This deal is only worth it if it's worldwide.

Love that Street Fighter V is being made but I told myself to never get a Vanilla version of a Capcom fighter after feeling really burned by Ultra Marvel vs. Capcom 3 coming out the same year as Vanilla did.

Marvel licensing played a huge part in how that all played out. It's not the same as a fully-owned IP. I'll cut them slack for the Vanilla to Super upgrade because it was their first game back after a decade where success was not certain and Super added a ton of content. They learned after Super, and their upgrade paths for the next updates have been actually quite reasonable and flexible, probably handled the best of any series.

So good this isn't cross gen.

Let's see what Capcom can really do with the PS4. Seems promising as didn't Ono say something along the lines of 'it's amazing how Sony is helping us get the most out of the PS4'.

Also, great that Ryu doesn't look as bad as he does in SF4 with his big boggle eyes there. Dude is meant to be Japanese, at least make his face like SF3.

yeah, but considering SF is arguably their biggest series, they really don't need outside funding to make V. It was going to happen regardless. Sony obviously moneyhatted and I don't have anything wrong it, tbh.

Oh man Greenburg needs to give his account over to an intern at this point.

There's a thread about that already.

Bargaining

Not surprised, Capcom are obviously open to business ideas. People had better keep an eye on their favourite games, they could go either way.

I really need Capcom to make a good game this time. Will be interesting to know the time frame this one will take part in.

Seriously? Capcom unable to fund the first new-gen instalment of one of their most - if not THE most - iconic series? Hard to believe...

That said, this teaser didn't blow me away as I wished.

I loved SFIV artstyle, I thought it was a huge step in the right direction, in order to keep the series' visual identity intact, and using the new hardware capabilities at the same time.

SFV... Well, it kinda looks like a more detailed and more 'realistic' SFIV, which - in my opinion - is quite a contraddiction. The effect - for now, and also considering how dramatically SFIV improved from its early stages to the final build - is not impressive at all for me.

I expected Capcom to pull the same kind of artistic 'reworking' behind Arc's Guilty Gear Xrd, whereas they seem to have followed the Tekken way, this time around.

While iconic, Street Fighter isn't the most successful thing these days. Through several iterations it's technically sold a decent amount, and I believe is the highest selling fighting game series of the past generation (Tekken is probably close to it in terms of global success), but most successful fighting game series doesn't mean much these days. And Capcom only seems willing to fund the safest, most profitable projects it can.

And yeah I wish there was a bit more stylistic flair to the art style (and they might still add that in), but I do like the character models. There's a lot of meathead fanboys that make up the FGC that don't appreciate things like SFIV's unique, cartoony/animated art style. They'd rather see COOL BADASS SWEET GRAPHIX. Have you seen custom fightstick art?

This looks like SFIII to me, but next-gen. Which, I think is a good start, but I do think it still needs something to make it unique and really stand out.

So, this game wouldn't have been made if not for Sony?

Is this closer to Bayonetta for WiiU or Tomb Raider for Xbox? I was under the impression MS made T.R exclusive after it was well in development for PS4

Lol
There are lots of exclusive fighting titles on PS3.

Unless I'm misconstruing his response, I believe he's saying that this move doesn't negatively impact the FGC since they've always primarily been on Playstation platforms - otherwise his response doesn't really make sense considering what he responded to.

Older fight sticks don't work on PS4? Why?

Because Sony/MS didn't make it a baseline function of their consoles and developers need to enable it in their game.

LabZero (of skullgirls fame) made a driver to allow certain ps3 sticks to work on ps4, but I have my doubts that any other developers will use it.

Closer to TR. Anybody that truly believes it wouldn't have been made without Sony is delusional. It's possible Sony helped out with development and fees, but it would have been made regardless.

We don't have any idea yet. This was a leak.

I'm sure you have a source for this statement that isn't your ass, right?

Not really, everyone knows that they have financial problems.
Yeah, I'm aware of it, and I wasn't doubting the post.

Point is: while I could totally understand that with Bayonetta 2 and Devil's Third, I guess I'm just more shocked now, since it's Capcom and Street Fighter we're talking about.

And this, yeah. Very true.
