The Game Awards trophy unveiled, made by Weta Workshop

Angel rising from the digital blocks. It's in the video.

Yeah I see that now. It's a cool progression. I appreciate the attempt to class-up the videogame industry but I can't help but feel a contrast between the elegance of the award and the crassness of the industry and games it represents. Cool statuette though.

The Dorito Pope rises from the ashes, dishing away the Doritos to be a pure Pope.
I thought we were done with this stupidity.

Anyways, trophy looks great. Best of luck to Geoff tonight, won't be able to tune in live but the show is shaping up well.

I could say the same thing about Hollywood today, yet they still frame it all in glamour through the Oscars.

i was waiting for this

in all serious though it looks great, hope the event goes well and without a hitch for Geoff.

Didn't say it needed to be a controller, dude. I'm just not sure how much it's really showcasing the art of games when the award is cribbing notes from other notable award statues. Something more distinct to gaming would have been my preference, but this is still a nice design, like I said.

What is a gold dude holding a sword telling about movies?

That's true. Every industry wants to see its reflection as more beautiful than it truly is. I couldn't help but think about it though because of all the discussion of gender and identity in games this year along with the statue rendered as a woman.

I think it looks fantastic.

It evokes a feeling of a character evolving from her polygonal early 3D origins.

I would absolutely bet that's what it is designed as. Look at it.

I love how, even on a conceptual level, the award trophy represents its medium in a way laymen can understand. Assuming I'm watching this with persons unaccustomed to video games but familiar with raster displays and CG polygonal animation, they might figure out for themselves the significance of a winged angel emerging from increasingly fine geometry. It's a reference to the overall increase of complexity in games as a medium, and a commentary on how one image can be shaped, clarified, or redefined by technology—this message befits the industry for certain. The Oscar statue doesn't need to reflect this in its design because the shape itself refers to recognizable Hollywood stars, whose visages are considered iconic and rarely (in the last century at least) change as much as video games might.

Not super excited about Game Awards, but a proper industry award show (not a critical or journalistic one, rather) hasn't yet happened as far as I know. Here's to Keighley if he and the production staff can do a great job.

This really is Geoff's dream award shoe come to life. I'm so happy for him. I'm unfortunately going to miss it tonight but I hope it goes well. You deserve this Geoff!

I don't know. Even extremely crass or seemingly superficial games can have a ton of depth and elegance to their designs. That's why I think it's great that both Hearthstone and Bayonetta got nominated for GotY tonight. The former is seemingly simple and superficial, the later crass, loud and over the top, but both are excellent games - elegantly designed and with a ton of depth.

Maybe this is another attempt to push games to strive to be less singularly crass and have loftier goals?

Now Geoff just needs to nail the show itself. Just make it as classy and respectable as the trophy and people will start taking it much more seriously.

Outstanding. The thought and quality put into its creation makes a very loud statement about what the event organizer is trying to achieve.

Nicely done.

I don't think it's necessarily meant to push anyone to do anything. It's about really appreciating games as an art form, and awarding those who put so much work into them.

Instead of getting a paycheck from Mountain Dew and being a gigantic commercial for another fucking Call of Duty game.
