Hall of Fame for the DUMBEST comments made by game devs and publishers:

Yeah, this one needs to be in the Hall of Fame.

Every now and again I forget about it, and then when I remember, it always makes me laugh. Text book definition of a "try hard".

I can't find the interview but around the PS3 era I think it was EA said something along the lines of "Our games are such good value that customers feel like they are stealing from us"

And this one

"Well, you know, things break."

Peter Moore, wasn't it, talking about the constant freaking red rings of death caused by - if memory serves - improperly added thermal paste.

1. "Just don't play it." Naoki Yoshida, FFXIV Dawntrail backlash

2. "If you want the full experience, buy the deluxe edition." Peter Molyneux, Fable III.

3. "You think you do, but you don't" J. Allen Brack on demand for World of Warcraft Classic

4. "You're playing it wrong" David Cage, Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls.

5. "It's not about the money" John Riccitielo, EA.

6. "Single player games are dead" EA, Ubisoft execs on multiple occasions.

7. "Our goal was not fun" Jeff Kaplan, Overwatch 2 PvE.

8. "We didn't want to make a political statement" Ubisoft, Division 2.

9. "Don't you guys have phones?" Wyatt Cheng, Diablo Immortal.

10. "NFTs are the future of gaming." Ubisoft.

11. "We're proud of our work on Anthem." Bioware.

12. "We don't crunch at CD Projekt Red" CDPR leadership, cyberpunk 2077.

13. "We'll fix it later" Todd Howard, Skyrim, Fallout 4.
I appreciate the honesty but I dislike threads that eventually cause summoning Peter Moore.

"You think you do, but you don't" & "Don't you guys have phones?" might be my all time favorites.
Especially the first one considering the context, when they finally launched vanilla servers it was a smash hit.

"And here we have this GIANT ENEMY CRAB!"
"Didge you rike it?!"
"One Mirrion Trups! Wwwwooaaaoowwww"
"IT'S Ridge Racer! RIDDDGGEEEEE RAAACEERRR!!"
"PEEEGGLLLEEE 2!!"
"My Body is Ready!"
"Don't ask me for SHIT!"

Oldies but goldies... not exactly a dev but: "Toodloo Toodloo Toodloo" *Mr. Caffeine* "Yikes!".
These are golden quotes.

"A girl should have long hair".
- Dave Perry, Shiny

Burned in my brain as the moment I read it a hundred years ago I was like WTF is he talking about.

Hottest take of the decade
How this guy was lauded by so many as the hero journalist of gamers.

He was and always has been a little weenie with a few friends in Ubisoft, so he leaked some games, which raised him to stardom amongst gamers.

sensationalist journalism through and through.

I have yet to see the man write anything of value that wasn't just shitting on companies that aren't conforming to his retard think.

I see a lot of misquotes, to stick with the originals and what I could find for reputable sources:

Fortunately we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity, it's called Xbox 360.
- Don Mattrick

Do you guys not have phones?
- Wyatt Cheng

Article:
Our goal for PlayStation 3 is for consumers to think to themselves, 'I will work more hours to buy one'. We want people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else.
- Ken Kutaragi

Article:
That, and I was at a Gran Turismo event recently where they had PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 games, and the PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this?
- Jim Ryan

Article:
Customers do not want online games.
- Satoru Iwata

Article:
We are convinced that we are probably from an industry view undermonetising on a per-user basis
- Strauss Zelnick

Well first we don't call them loot boxes... So we look at it as surprise mechanics. But I think it's important to look at this. If you go to a store that sells a lot of toys and you do a search for surprise toys, what you'll find is that this is something people enjoy. They enjoy surprises.

This one wasn't necessarily dumb at the time, but in today's context:
Article:
The idea of a handheld rivalry with Nintendo is an irrelevance. Those formats don't appear in our planning.
- Phil Harrison

Sony exec: PS3 can run at 120 fps

While perhaps technically true (is it?), this was made before PS3 even came out. So the guy was hyping the system as if games will be 120 fps when the norm at the time was 30 fps and some games at 60 fps on console. And no TV at the time was even 120 fps.

Dude is a hypocrite and a disingenuous asshole. He said himself that he knew about what was going on at Blizzard but refused to report it because "he couldn't be sure that it's the truth". Got salty as fuck when others reported it instead. But also had and has no problems reporting other similar cases of abuse at other companies.

The guy is a sensationalist at best and an enabler of the practices he claims to be against at worst. I get that he is right with his leaks about games in development more often than not, but that's the only value this guy has, imho. And he probably knows it, too. Because at the end of the day, most people only care about him for the leaks, not because of his "reports" or the mediocre books he writes.

As for you guys talking Jason S above, just remember he's in media.

His entire career and existence is based off clicks. If he doesn't churn out baity tweets and articles, nobody will read his material and he'll disappear and lose his job.

Just ignore the guy and he'll in the unemployment line.

I loved the guy, but "please understand" by Satoru Iwata for a delay became a meme back then I remember.

"He's a 10, but he only plays single player games" - tweeted by EA

"My body is ready" - Reggie Fils Aime. either its dumb as hell or so dumb it's brilliant.

"Heated gaming moment" not done by a dev, but an announcer I think to defend some racist shit.

"It's a service, not a product." – John Riccitiello, Electronic Arts (2011)

In relation to Battlefield 3 and its mandatory DRM and always-online features. Games-as-a-Service (Gaas) I think became widely known to hardcore gamers with Fortnite in 2017, but this being from 2011 is like seeing where the timeline forked.

"Actually, money is how the community steers content"
- Gabe Newell on paid mods. It was the most downvoted comment in Reddit history at the time.

"Players should pay for every bullet" (paraphrasing)
-Some moron EA executive (Riccitiello?) talking about the future of Battlefield.

Here's a recent one from a Veilguard developer:
"We Couldn't Have Made A Better Dragon Age game and we're proud of it." 😄

Randy Pitchford is probably my favorite though. He never fails at making everything worse while doing damage control. Remember when he defended the bait and switch changes to Colonial Marines? Or when he tried to explain why he lied about coming up with "Valve" after Gabe called him out... The funniest one was probably when he tried to get out ahead of the story of him losing his USB-stick with loli-porn on it and randomly brought it up on some podcast lol.

Missed this one:

"Fortunately, we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity; it's called Xbox 360"

This is 100% it. I think this statement was the moment when a lot of people realized that Xbox had completely lost the plot.

I knew this would just be a giant Xbox/Phil Spencer thread.

Feet in mouth champs for 10+ years running.

Edit: sorry guess this douche doesn't count as a developer or publisher, but since others have already brought him up….
