The Game Awards 2014 Thread: Keighley unveils, less McHales

For all those bitching about other people bitching.

Entertainment >>>>>>> empty attempts at validation. Yippie, a boring show that feels cobbled together, where indie devs show 20 second trailers and corporations send their finest speakers to reveal smaller, already known projects. I'm certainly feeling the love and warmth. Having my hobby be validated with suits and a fancy stage really makes me glad to play games.

You complain about people waiting validation but you need to make clear to forum posters how much you dislike that people like the show.

This is pretty much as crappy a show as the VGAs were.

Horrible sound mixing, weird camera views, horrible and lame music performances, extremely boring and weak "World Premieres", lack of awards being given out and letting the winner get on stage to give a short speech. "Hey, you won this category, here's your trophy [over here away from the stage]." Just a step above giving the award to the winners walking into the building at the VGAs.

Afternoon Delight *clap clap*

Did he just give away an award, that was the most awkward trophy handing ever

Aye yo' you in the seat, come here, I know ya?, oh ya, you won, here take this, stretch our time by 2 minutes

Ok, I'll break down what I think so far.

This is an honest attempt at making a true to gamers game show, by Geoff. He fronted the cost up front. He couldn't get all the expensive pros to run the sound, and the cuts, and all the other technical stuff. He gives a shit though. And it shows. All of the things in this show I give more of a shit about than the abomination that was last years VGAs.

I appreciate this from Geoff. I wish more people made an attempt like he is.

This, at least feels, genuine.

Yeah, this is practically a whole new show at this point, which makes the unpolished stuff forgivable for now. The foundation is clearly good for once.

The problem is it's a bit low on the awards point and look back in videogames instead of look forward. I get that games are a forward looking business, and this thing needs to have some "world primers" but what they've been showing is really bringing the show down.

Most of the awards are off hand comments. BEST DEVELOPER was a four word ward!

Oh and Nintendo wins best developer, oh hey there's that other guy here's you Hearthstone award, oh yeah forgot you were standing here Reggie, award is in the mail, and onto more commercials!

Geoff seems tired. LOts of "ahh"s and "hmmm"s every 2 or 3 words. It makes concentrating difficult.
He clearly does not have a radio background, it's important though. Hope it gets better as the years go by.

So far I'd say this is a great first effort. Cut out the musical acts. Cut out stupid ads. Focus on the awards, have more technical awards.. For example, Best Level Design, Best Character Design, etc... There are SO many avenues of the game development process that get glossed over as too technical, or boring.. But rewarding these devs should be important, and should be a real thing. Have live gameplay reveals. Don't try to emulate the Grammy's or the Oscar's. Just be your own thing.

So, although I admit this has been much better than Spike's crap the past few years, this has been quite

Well, they gotta start somewhere I suppose.

Yes, definitely a huge HUGE improvement over last year's VGA. The beginning of the show was fantastic but rapidly turned down into actual VGA's last year show :(

Is there not ANYONE else who can run these shows? Geoff gas been trying to get these awards "right" for years now. This year he had more control than ever into how the show comes off and it's still absolute garbage. He obviously is incapable of putting together a cohesive show.

Wow, at least previous awards shows had some sort of "Structure" to them even though the execution was crap.

This show has neither structure or execution. And it seems like it is going to be a long show too. What a disaster.

I fully expect to see Geoff in tears by the end of the evening.
His dreams are slowly dying before his eyes.
Don't give up Geoff, 'cos you've got friends.
OH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For as mediocre as this show has mostly been, I've gotta give Geoff credit for putting all of this effort in. He is at least trying to make it seem classy when he is on screen.
