CM Punk signs with UFC

Oh yeah, I will watch. Absolutely brilliant move by the UFC. Whatever PPV he debuts at is going to do numbers that will make Vince poop his pants. More than usual.

Probably because Punk had more coming to him, or other incentives that voiding the contract may have discarded.
 
"He wanted to fight here," Dana White told ESPN.com. "He wanted to give it a shot, so we gave him an opportunity. It's not like Brock Lesnar. We're not going to throw the kitchen sink at him. Lesnar had a wrestling background. (CM Punk) is going to fight a guy who is 1-0, 1-1, 2-1 -- something like that."

White did not have a firm 2015 date for CM Punk's debut, saying it could take some time, perhaps six to seven months. The UFC head noted that Brooks has been training jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts for an extended period of time.

"He's been coming to fights for a long time and after his WWE contract was up, he called me and said he wanted to give it a shot. I said, 'All right. We'll give you a shot.' "

At 36, CM Punk acknowledges that time is not on his side.

"My professional wrestling days are over, it's awesome to be here," he said in a statement. "This is something I've wanted to do for a long time.

"I felt like it was now or never. I have a limited window most fighters don't have. I'm either here to win or get my ass kicked."

I doubt he'll even fight a top guy. He'll just (hopefully) give us a good fight or two against a somebody mediocre. Probably go 0-2, but maybe, maybe keep it respectable.

e: Also, I feel like this is partly a setup so they can have him on commentary later.

Well, it's hard to say how he's going to do. People who say that he's going to get beat easy are the people who know that the things that made him a top guy in pro wrestling are his personality and charisma.

MMA fights often end really quickly, and he's been doing marathons and long pro wrestling matches. He's smart. He's tough. Can he cut weight? Can he overcome being 36 years old? Those are big hills.

I would believe that he can outgrapple someone. Can he take a punch from a guy in better shape than him though?

"In 2015" means it's going to be a while before we find out.

Maybe he needs more time to train anyway.
 
Let's see... a year "off" to learn fighting, spar with a partner who won't hurt you, and weight training...
Or... a grueling schedule of taking a lot of damage to your body which eventually require surgery.

Dana White wants him there and is allowing him to do this on his own timeframe vs. Vince and Trips who burned him out because they "needed him".

Wrestling fans are some crazy fools.
 
His interview makes it clear he is aware of all the same issues people are bringing up here. He even flat out says there is a chance he just gets his ass kicked. This is something he has wanted to try for a long time, I'm glad he has a chance regardless of the outcome. Nothing wrong with trying.

No one's doubting that this is a much grander opportunity than what he was getting in the WWE.

People are doubting he can survive one round. I say this as a huge Punk fan.
 
Everyone posting "it's not about money" obviously didn't listen to the podcast. His MO was that it's not worth doing a job you don't enjoy whatever the pay. For a goal oriented guy like Punk he's getting to test himself at something new and just happens to be getting paid a shitload of money to do so, but the important thing is I'm sure he'll be happier than he was in WWE (until he gets his head kicked in)!

Bingo.

People here act like that just because Wreslting is scripted, doesn't mean it doesn't take a huge toll on your body. Wreslting in the WWE EVERY SINGLE DAY/WEEK I imagine is far worse than fighting how many matches per year? Three? Four even? With most of that other time being spent training, sparring all at your own pace instead of worrying about requiring constant MRIs and surgery just to stay alive.

If Punk can handle THAT, I'm pretty sure Punk can handle UFC just fine. As far as him actually winning, I have no idea. A lot of UFC matches are basically crap shoots. Brock Lesnar in his first match got his ass handed to him yet eventually still became UFC champion. Who says it can't happen to Punk? He's not gonna fight heavyweights here people, he's fighting people in his own weight class.

Well technically he did lose in the first round that first time to Frank Mir, but of course got the win in the rematch.

I was kind of in and out of the WWE when CM Punk came, but I never saw anything special athletically. The dude can handle the microphone just fine though which will put asses in seats.

I am very curious who they will throw at him first. This is obviously as ploy to get the attention of people, but I wonder how long Dana wants to drag it out.
 
Just so Vince and H can get a fuck you thrown at them. I hope Punk wins whatever weight-class title he ends up in, and plays his cult of personality music, brings out Brock, and then gives a finger to "Paul."

He's not an athlete at all. You can get away with not being a natural athlete in pro wrestling. He had stuff to make up for it. That shit isn't going to fly in MMA. He's awkward as shit, and when you see him throwing his mooey tie strikes and head kicks, that shit is going to get him murdered against a real fighter. He's slow and awkward.
