CM Punk signs with UFC

the non-competes last for a year I believe, so it should be up in April. It's funny though cause he mentioned how Alberto got the non-compete torn up because it was BS and sicked his lawyers on them. Wonder why he didn't do the same.

I was under the impression WWE non-competes weren't worth the paper they were printed on after what punk said in the interview. I figured his non-compete ended immediately as part of his settlement with WWE

Just like Brock he's gonna be throw to the wolves, the ufc can't afford to CM Punk losing against a nobody and is gonna be ugly.

Brock was an accomplished college wrestler with a record of something like 102-6, and he fought the great but past his prime Randy Couture and really good just not against wrestlers Frank Mir.

Can't put a non-compete on an independent contractor.

Just so Vince and H can get a fuck you thrown at them. I hope Punk wins whatever weight-class title he ends up in, and plays his cult of personality music, brings out Brock, and then gives a finger to "Paul."

FUCK I'M HAPPY ABOUT THIS

Is he doing commentary or coaching stuff? lol

A lot of people are expecting him to fail. But I don't really care. If you were 36 and could do anything you wanted to, then why not? Win or lose, I give the guy credit for at least putting his hat in the ring and going for it. I'd love to be in the physical condition where I could have an MMA fight, and I wish him well.

Haha so many salty replies. Win or lose its good for him and UFC hope Vince and Triple H are just as salty tonight.

I love when you post, but anti wwe news i never know your stance.

I'm so excited for someone i enjoy on the mic and as a person to be in ufc. Connor is the only guy i buy ppvs for now. Punk is getting the Brock treatment. I hope he does great and they have his ppv line up with a huge wwe network event(stop calling them ppvs for wwe).

If hes anywhere near chicago for his first legit fight, im there. Phil has earned my money for entertainment.

It's insane that anyone would be upset about this. It's spectacle. Will he almost certainly wash out, as a late-30s dude with zero fight experience and a very light background in grappling? Yes. So what!? Then he'll wash out and everything will be happy again. Chill.

Imagine if Punk's first opponent in the UFC ends up being John Cena!

There's still people who think MMA is a sport. It's still real to them, if you will.

who is upset? People are just talking about something newsworthy and speculating on how successful he will be. I think Punk will get destroyed but damn if I won't be watching.

You can put a non-compete clause on anyone so long as they sign the paper. That being said, 99 times out of 100 non-compete clauses aren't worth the paper they are printed on due to being too vague, too broad, too long in duration or simply too stupid for the courts to uphold. The underlying rationale is that the courts do not want to stifle market forces, so anything seen as infringing on that usually goes out the window, regardless of whether you signed it or not.

In the case of CM Punk, putting a non-compete on him could actually work as it would be very specific (don't work for these 3 companies) and wouldnt be exhaustive in duration (6 months to a year). Obviously it seems like they tore it up because even if it is a valid non-compete, it would be extremely difficult to enforce as no judge would grant an injunction or anything remotely close to it to prevent Punk from joining the UFC.

I love, love, love MMA. Love it. Haven't missed a PPV in 5+ years. I gamble. It's fantastic. It's one of my main hobbies.

But the shit is 90% spectacle. People who get all seeriuz about MMA are megadorkz.

You're not getting upset. But Reddit, Twitter, and even some pockets of this thread are on fire with dudes who are livid about Brooks getting signed. I don't get it

Can't wait for Cena to be signed next week and get the main event spot over Punk. Amazing night of fights. Thought bellator would pull the trigger first but the UFC really outdid themselves.

Well they have forever and people could ALWAYS break it if they wanted to, they just wouldn't the 3 months of pay they would get other wise. People have broken it in the past without any repercussions besides losing the 90 days of pay.

Wouldn't be surprised it was a defensive play by UFC to keep him from Bellator, even if it does betray their "real sport" portrayal. That's the media rumbling, anyway. Does make some sense.

Props to punk. At 36 and a body beat up from pro wrestling he doesn't have time on his side but his got nothing to lose. It's not like his going back to the wwe.

I haven't watched ufc for over a year but I would watch the punk fight simply cos it's something different and I can't even say I'm a fan of him as I don't watch wwe and not seen much of his work.

100% this is part of a plan to bolster his value to WWE so he can be brought back as a part timer after a couple of fights and get a big WM pay day. Probably against Brock.

But if he gets knocked out twice then what's the upside for the wwe? They ain't going to sign some guy who and put him in some wrestle mania main event that gets bodied in the ufc.

WWE brought Brock back after 2 straight, pretty decisive losses. Dudes going off to do movies/MMA has been the key to getting a sweet deal later on.

im cool with this and support this decision. i dont know why people are so against this, it will be fun

I think a lot of it is people object to the 'real' sport being tarnishes by pro wrestlers.

Japan never had this issue. In fact Japanese MMA was built on the back of pro wrestling and having pro wrestlers 'fight' was a good thing.

True but he was also the champion for a brief time.

This is some Japanese mma freak show shit. Is he gonna fight Jose Canseco or a giant?

lesnar got hate but was a beast and had a legit background. Who knows what he could have done without his health issues.

Everyone saying that he's gonna get his face kicked in are the one's that are still mad he left the WWE.

Or hardcore MMA fans pissed that he's about to be fed can after can because his name will draw. Dana White's not stupid, he's not going to sign a guy like Punk, especially to a multi-fight contract, and throw him in there with a killer his first fight. His fights are going to be easy peesy and he's going to get plenty of mic time to draw wrestling fans in and boost the PPV buys.

i thought ryback put his ass out of commission permanently?

Only thing Ryback has ever put out of commission was a buffet table during his cheat day. :p

Vince can't afford to put Brock on TV.. i can't imagine what Punks WWE contract will look like if he ever decides to come back in the future lol

With this I think he will do another stint in the WWE before he steps away from the spot light. All the UFC has to do is feed him a few cans so that he can end his contract with a good record and he will end up getting paid premium bucks by the WWE for part time work.

It's a catch 22 though, because if you take green as shit Punk and give him green as shit opponent you likely end up with a terrible, boring, TUF tryouts level fight, only on a $60 PPV. Even if Punk wins it likely won't be pretty and will come off really badly. there is a reason most guys' first fights are not on tv.

I can't wait for the post-UFC shoot where he talks about how Dana never put him over anyone.

Sean O'Haire had a kickboxing background and got destroyed by Butterbean.

You mean the Butterbean who most likely would have KTFO any UFC heavyweight in a boxing match during his prime? You really surprised that he beat a guy who hasn't really fought?
