Legend of Zelda Wii U Gameplay Demo

This is apples and oranges. Like comparing a Pixar movie to Avatar, or something equivalent. It's all about artistic choice.

It will all make sense when you get chased half a mile across open fields on horseback, but yeah apples and oranges.
I hate all the not next get enough bs that I read about Wii U/Nintendo.

Oh my god I just reminded myself how awesome this looks by re-watching the segment.

Good lord is this game going to be awesome.

As anecdotal evidence I showed the segment to my roommate, who hasn't played a mainline Zelda game in years (I think since Ocarina actually), and he couldn't get over how much he wanted to play the game.

That's because it looks like every Zelda fan's dream.

I bring this commercial up every few years, because it does encapsulate where I would like Zelda to go in an open world in terms of gameplay and interactions between items:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8M3L3VIHV_k

Maybe we'll get there with this one, who knows.

Is that suppose to be going from the top best to the bottom worst? The vast emptiness of space. Can't get more desolate than that. The Rogue Squardons on the Gamecube looked better than that last gif.

Isn't he just trying to say that people have become too "action" focused

The only good action is too much action™

I like you! I myself have been upset over forests getting cut over and over, that Twilight Princess one looked really cool, so it's nice that we'll probably get a real actual forest this time around.

On balance, with regards to the Zelda team, Beta Forest and N64 forest was implemented in SS as Faron Woods. This is not to say the execution was strong or the execution was what players who wanted open world Zelda gameplay to be like. It was such as shame that they wasted the potential in SS. Even with the completely changed environment in the latter half of the game.

How does it make any sense to compare GTAV (a finished game) to Zelda Wii U (still in-development)?
No need to feel threaten. Is just a comparsion of the footage we have with what we know from GTA V, the comparison are quite specific also, pertaining the aspects of the overworld.

Is a bit of an unfair comparsion since Nintendo is not at the level of Rockstar when creating these type of worlds. Plus NIntendo priorities lies elsewhere.

About as much sense as complaining about how ANY game looks a year before their release.

We don't know how much of what we saw was unfinished/not final/placeholder. And Nintendo's polish is legendary.

This is why publishers do CGI trailers...

I want a story trailer now. :( I've seen enough gameplay videos. Do we even know when theis Zelda is set?

With the sailcloth, SS type technology (the arrows) and artstyle, I am guessing it is set between SS and Minish Cap. However, I would like a child timeline game or a game that takes place after Zelda 2.

I really hope they have some nice forests in this one, like I remember playing Shadow of the Colossus and you'd enter this little forest with a stream and a tiny pond and it was just completely unimportant to the game, it was just there to look pretty.

Edit: I like how that cliff pic is the only one posted to show how "Bad" the game looks. I'd be surprised if those rock textures are finished.

Stop posting pictures of GTA5. It's a city. Open fields obviously don't have as much shit in them as dense cities. The fact that anyone thought this was even a valid or logical comparison is mind boggling. It really is

I don't feel threatened. The comparison would make more sense and be fair, if you showed an unfinished screenshot of GTAV to Zelda Wii U in order to discuss the overworld. I can bet that the city in GTAV looked much less spectular, a year before it was due to be finished..

I don't really get what happens when Aonuma sets the beacon thru the zoom in-feature. Is it only possible to set beacons at certain landmarks you'll have to aim at or something? Because I didn't see an option to choose the exact location of the beacon, I only saw that tower he aimed at light up when he set the beacon.

If you notice, the reticule turns white and black depending on what you aim it at. My guess that alerts lets you know where you can set a waypoint.

Rather than comparing to GTA, why not compare to Xenoblade. An open world for the Nintendo Wii that could present you with a fairly lively world on an inferior console. And Monolith Soft is part of Nintendo and they share resources a lot. We already have nice gameplay footage from Xenoblade X which shows what they're capable of creating on the Wii U.

Because, like you said, GTA and Zelda U are both open world but with such different priorities on game design and ideas that the comparison really is a bit silly.

Well this is certainly something of the Zelda Fanbase I DIDN'T miss...

Posted some excitement on Facebook and was met with "looks cartoony" and "Link looks like a clown." About ready to just stop looking to the internet for Zelda excitement because Jesus Christ.

Haha jk I'm not going anywhere fuckers, I will be here when the game comes out to bear witness to you all repenting for your sins and mockery!

I thought it looked barren, but on second thought, the GIF's feel right. I don't know, sure, it could get a little more dense, but some open spaces with little to do can be quite immersive as well.

I don't know. Looked nice, apart from some texture issues aside (obviously because it's still in development), so if they can iron those out AND add lots of secret places and hopefully one or two optional ACTUAL dungeons (maybe half or a quarter in side of a real dungeon), that would be fucking great.

That's what I'm saying!

If Nintendo follows the same structure for game development as anyone else, the game is most likely in Alpha. Normally this means the content of the game is in (or should be) and a lot of it is placeholder (temporary replacement until the finished content is done and put in, mostly concerns texture, models, visual effects, text and cutscenes.)

How does it make any sense to compare GTA (best casual sandbox game) to Zelda (SO MUCH different action adventure game)?
Fixed.

Apples and Oranges.

This what Zelda is about:
FN6hSul.jpg

Dungeons are what define Zeldas, in 2015 I've yet to see a Rockstar building as well designed as any Zelda dungeons of the last 10 years. And that is because, GTA is no Zelda, and Zelda is no GTA, nor is it a Skyrim for kids as I read earlier. Different design, priorities, ambitions in terms of satisfying gamers (not in casual way).

I don't feel threatened. The comparison would make more sense and be fair, if you showed an unfinished screenshot of GTAV to Zelda Wii U in order to discuss the overworld.
You discuss what you have, is that simple.

What you shouldn't do with the comparison thought, is trying to reach some type of definitive conclusion. Which is something i don't see any " sane" person doing.

i was just thinking about this. This is also a good comparison.

To GTA V? In terms of details it would be miles ahead, as expected.

There's also the Assassin's Creed, Bethesda and Cry games to throw into the comparison pot.

As you very well put, it compares favorably to open world games. The thing is it's comprehensible for some people not be amazed by this. After all these people have been play things on a similar scale for years now.

Also Thunder for a game with lots of grass in past generation consoles look no further than Far Cry 2, it even served an important gameplay purpose for the fire simulation.

The world of AC doesn't lend itself well to a proper platforming system at all. If it was skilled based as in Mario, it would be impossible to play the game as you'd have to start over and over again if you fall down, which you will considering the sheer volume of platforms. The world is garbage from a platformer standpoint, yet the game insists on its parkour system as one of the main gameplay elements. For that reason they use an auto pilot system, to keep the skill barrier low and minimize frustration, which results in very boring gameplay.

Therefore to make platforming fun, they'd have to construct the world differently, and add a system that works well within that world, giving you a sense that you're the one responsible, as opposed to feeling like you are passively watching cool shit unfold on your screen.

Eh, no. I completely disagree with this line of thinking. When I first played Xenoblade on the Wii, I have already played on the PS3 and PC for years, but that didn't make Xenoblade, on a lesser hardware, less impressive visually. I was amazed by the huge landscapes, by the vegetation, by the (huge) monsters roaming the vast lands. Every software is a new experience. It contains new stories, new characters, new worlds to explore, new battle system, new music and so on. Just because some games have similarities in game design (open world), doesn't mean you can't be impressed with another game. We are not playing scales, we are playing a game and a game consists of many aspects, not just one.

And stop comparing GTAV to Zelda U, they are going for completely different graphical styles.

One or two optional dungeons is not enough, if you are referring to smaller sized caves with multiple rooms or mini dungeons. They need to be scattered all over the world. I know a lot of people will not like me making the Skyrim comparison, but I want caves, caverns, holes and forests with meaningful dungeon content all over the world. Density is key as well in a world this large. this can include villages and objects of interest as well. The difference is, this content will be crafted to the tools the player gets in this game as opposed to other open world games. And forests should not only be an opportunity to create new environments, but they should be open dungeons themselves.

Of course, this demo is not yet finished. So a lot of the content they may appear in the overworld like the overworld dungeon content in SS may yet appear. My dream of one large Zelda dungeon on the map split into environments pertaining to different areas may come to fruition.

It's over guys, there are more technically impressive games. Stop trying to enjoy the graphics of this inferior game.

IF only a new Metroid game could have this kind of overworld (in an unknown planet that Samus stranded with her ship), I would be so happy, I am glad the Zelda fans are getting finally their dream Zelda game, this looks like it could be the Zelda game everyone dreamed of back in the day. Now I also hope that Nintendo will do the same with Metroid.

Metroid Prime?

Isn't he just trying to say that people have become too "action" focused

The only good action is too much action™

That's exactly what i'm saying.

It's not the amount of space on offer or what is featured, it's how it is used.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpcoO7bTV48&feature=youtu.be

Like this trailer shows:

- Flying from a base.
- Flying past a Super Spacecraft.
- Flying into Atmosphere.
- Landing on a place to do trade or something.
- Flying out back into space.
- Warping millions of planets away to a Undiscovered place full of animals and birds...but not much else...

This makes me think: What else will there be in between these planets or even on the planets they land on? I don't think we need to go on every planet for minerals, just like we don't need to open every chest for rupees, but we do because we like to explore what's there.

Nintendo has been toying with crafting ever since Phantom Hourglass.

Hopefully they'll go to town in this game with the crafting.

That isn't really what he was asking for at all though, did you even read his post...?

Metroid Prime was an unknown planet, being stranded along with Samus and her ship, having access to a good portion of the map.

EDIT: Oh I do see now, having access to the near full map without gaining new items at the start.

You are making a refutal to my argument ignoring the context in which it was made.

The context was, that you can compare the overworlds in both GTA V and Zelda U independent of their respective graphical styles. This was even specified in one of previous answers.

The comparison is in terms of how much detail density developers chose (or have time and hardware resources available) to pack in each game.

It is highly doubtful Nintendo could even aproach Rockstar in terms of details. And it should be expected since it's that studio trademark and they have been activly fleshing out their platform and tech for decades to reach such levels. Something that Nintendo haven't been doing and aren't interested in the first place.

That's all.

Btw, everyone keeps calling the enemies Moblins. But they're not Moblins.

They're Bokoblins or Bulblins (though the latter tend to be green). Moblins are always big hulking creatures and Bokoblins and Bulblins are always little grunt enemies that look more impish.

"One or two" was actually meant as a figure of speech, but I'd really like four actual, optional dungeons at the very, very least. More is better, 6 maybe. Basically secondary, optional dungeons you can choose to clear or not. And I too don't want to compare Skyrim (despite me loving it) to Zelda, but Skyrim had TONS amount of content with all the secondary stuff. And I'd like tons and uncountable little secret areas like the smaller sized caves, caverns and holes you've already mentioned. If they really want to have exploration as the key element in this Zelda, then anything less is unacceptable. Otherwise we'd get a TP 2: best dungeons of the series, the most shit and barren overworld of the series.

I think the important takeaway from both the initial teaser and then this video is that archery will be a very, very important mechanic in the game.

  • It's his primary means of attack in both the teaser and the trailer.
  • We even see link's quiver in this game, and it's hanging prominently below his shield.
  • He uses very special arrows that seem to have some kind of magic or technology applied to them.
  • They added a whole new technique where link can jump off the horse to shoot the bow while time slows down.
  • Most Zelda games highlight the unique features of a system, and this one will most likely feature gamepad-aiming as its primary gimmick for arrows. We already see Aonuma using this in the trailer, and I think that's going to be one of the larger mechanics in the game.

I don't think it will be a "very, very important" mechanic. The reason they are showing so much archery is because of the whole vaulting off the horse mechanic.
So yeah, while riding the horse the archery will be the main form of attack, but for everything else there will be swordplay as always.

No but I think he meant an open world, which whilst being open, Metroid Prime didn't really offer.

The one thing that I hope they stay away from or at least minimize is how the environment was part of the dungeon itself like Skyward Sword.

I mean I liked that aspect of it in that game, but it limited the exploration feel about Zelda that I love so much.

I just hope they don't take this huge world and divide it up into linear chunks that do little more than make the game artificially bigger than what it actually is.

Not hating on SS because it's actually one of my top Zelda's but this ZeldaU looks amazing. I want to play in the grass. I want to ride through a forest. I want to get lost on a mountain side looking for hidden caves without the story constantly pushing me forward.

And yes I know these things could always be done before and there's no reason to think it won't be the case again. I just don't want large parts of the map to have no other use than just to be the path to the next dungeon.

In the new video for example there are no flowers among the grass.

Not true. Look again.
There are not as many flowers as the reveal trailer because this is, plain and simply, a different area.

There are barely any animated atmospheric formations.

It's 7 PM in the game, sunset. In the reveal trailer it seemed like it was noon/afternoon.

Grass doesn't move in waves.

It does. Did you see when Link was running alongside the horses?

Are people really comparing a sandbox version of modern day Los Angeles to the fantasy world of an open world Zelda? Really?

I hate GAF sometimes I really do.

I really do love that they kept the sailcloth and the vertical elements of Skyward Sword. Diving down from your bird to the islands in the Sky was exhilarating. It's something I also loved about Just Cause. It helps so much with exploring the world and viewing planes too. They could play around with this mechanic and item a lot throughout the vast world.

I don't think it will be a "very, very important" mechanic. The reason they are showing so much archery is because of the whole vaulting off the horse mechanic.
So yeah, while riding the horse the archery will be the main form of attack, but for everything else there will be swordplay as always.

Swordplay was strong in SS, but let's not pretend it was great in twilight princess or wind waker. It was painfully easy and limited, enemy AI was poor and there were few, if any, serious combat encounters.

OOT and MM get a pass for their era.

So far we have only seen the sword used on epona and some small enemies. Nothing so far indicates the swordplay will be anything special, and that's why I'm open to link being mainly an archer.

I simply wonder how they can evolve the swordplay when they are already retrieving from the advancements made in SS.

I really don't think it will make until 2016, it looks really ambitous game for Nintendo, how many times was Twilight Princess delayed :P

Well, to be fair, Twilight Princess was delayed because they wanted to release it on launch for the Wii. But you make a point, but I personally feel Nintendo NEEDS to release this by 2015.
