Legend of Zelda Wii U Gameplay Demo

People are playing incredibly good looking interactive movies (well when there's no downgrade, glitches, day one patch, broken online...). A lot of franchises are going nowhere thanks to this and people are asking for more?

Damn... go play Uncharted 4 please (even if I hope it'll be better than the 3rd one so I can enjoy it. 2nd was best imo).

And lol to people asking for a GTA V look. Wii U is no way capable of rendering half of what PS4 can and Nintendo don't target for realism. They want everything to feel like it is coherent, they want the universe to be credible and everything to well fit in not copy / paste real life or other games.

To be fair you can;t expect Nintendo to compete with Rockstar.....R* are on another level not to mention thats on PS4.

Nevertheless I can relate to the point of the over world being uninteresting right now.

Let's be clear though; we havn't seen the overworld yet. We've seen a very small glimpse of one particular section of the overworld, via some iffy quality off screen footage. Of course, folk are entitled to discuss how they think what they've seen is bland looking, but I think when doing so we should be more clear on what exactly we have seen and how we've seen it.

Btw, just as a comparison:

This is how bloodborne looked when we saw it the first time (leaked gameplay vid)

This is how it looks now

I hope now people understand why there will never be a definitive Zelda title. The amount of bitching in this thread is kind of unreal.

What I dislike the most about this Zelda is that the play window is too tiny and the HUD is ridiculously huge with 2 japanese guys sitting on a couch.

I actually just want the game to look as good as in the E3 presentation. But ya know, I kind of don't believe in that anymore (also a few people here mentioned that the E3 footage was probably too good to be true). Oh well, it's a Zelda game, I'm sure I'll enjoy it

I for one love the fact that we have a huge realistic open world to explore in Zelda U. Just wondering around appreciating the scenery is going to be a lot of fun for me. I honestly prefer the overworlds to be like this than have something unique to do at every corner. When it's like that the world feels to gamey imo. I don't like the world feeling like it was built just for you. I like it to feel like a real, natural place.

Yea Nintendo is on a complete different level when it comes to quality and unique gameplay experiences. R* hasn't quite hit that level yet.

Some parts of the world were certainly baren and I hope they fill it up before release, but honestly I'm more about the dungeon play. Give me ALBW in 3D with a tad bit more challenge and I'm a very happy person.

Oh, GTA V comparison. But does GTA V have fruits and pizza like Pikmin 3?

You can check all the Pikmin 3 threads before the release, all the comments of "it's an Wii game". It happened also with SM3DW. Let the people talk shit. Until now Nintendo hasn't failed in quality in any big Wii U game.

Really? There's been like 20 Zeldas yet. Soooo unique. And R* IS on Nintendo's level and trumps it in presentation (voice actors, in-game-jokes) and writing as well.

This makes sense. I was kind of hoping that this picture was correct, but that would have meant that the over world is ridiculously expansive lol

zeldaumapsgyup.jpg

The circle I made for the E3 area wasn't supposed to indicate that everything in the E3 pic was WITHIN that circle. That's ridiculous :D

I just meant that both the E3 thing and the TGA thing HAPPENED within that circled area.

WiiU doesn't have the hardware to compete directly with even a last gen port on PS4. They added too much. But I think it compares favorably (from what we've seen at least) with open world titles on similar class hardware.

Working on weak hardware is one thing, how you take advantage of the hardware and what you do in terms of art-direction and environmental design is another.

There's a reason why the environments in Xenoblade look like this:

Hyrule doesn't have to look lifeless, flat and boring.

Is, is not, whatever, someone else will say something different. Trumps it, doesn't trumps it. All I know is they both are going for very different games and styles. I don't even know how you can compare the two.

The game looks good to me. I've grown tired of the Zelda franchise for awhile now but this has certainly got me excited to play a Zelda game again.

Considering it's a year out I look forward to seeing where it is in 6 months time with more polish.

People complaining about the barren fields in the trailer. With all that glorious grass, don't you think details such as various plants would be added at a later stage?

The E3 reveal showed a field with flowers, bugs, thingies flying around and I am pretty sure that's what they're aiming for. The new gameplay footage was to show off the scope and give an idea of, you know, the gameplay. Miyamoto even mentioned the fields will have bugs crawling around, trees will grow apples. Just believe. It's not an orchestrated CGI trailer, it is what it is at this point in development and I appreciate that they showed that.

What I like most about this is that most games that create large fields of grass have a lot of patches where there is no grass, just a flat grass texture. This, is nice.

It does have this in segments, especially around forests and paths/clearings.

To me those pictures represent what's wrong with graphics today. Too much detail distracts me from the gameplay.

At least Zelda U demo was decent at conveying information. One technique I like is having a bunch of generic looking rocks so that your attention is instantly drawn to the one stone thing that looks distinct, is memorable and has a purpose. Other devs want to make an atmosperic world as possible, so that filtering the fluff from the substance is just draining my energy for no reason.

Also the uneveness of the terrain is confusing: can Link actually walk up that hill? it looks kind of steep. But I know he can, because Nintendo placed a tall tower there, indicating that indeed this is a place I should try to reach.

So it's fine in terms of graphical detail. But Crysis, Witcher 3, GTA 5 etc. can go die in a fire. Very unappealing visuals, Captain Toad is the ultimate art style and use of geometry for me. Trine is also a mess, constant halt of gameplay so that I have to analyze the environment, while in DKC Tropical Freeze the clarity allows me to maintain momentum.

I'm sorry, did you just say Grand Theft Auto V on PS4 has 'unappealing visuals'?

How are those unappealing? Why should GTAV 'die in a fire' because of the visuals above? Is it stopping other games from looking how they want to look? No. All it's done is raise the bar. And you know what? Nintendo did the exact same thing on 21 November 1998 when they put out a game that raised the bar - and I didn't hear people complaining then about how it was bad that everyone at EAD was working on this single project, how its expensive nature made it bad for gaming, how it was ruining the mid tier games, how the extra detail took away from the simplicity of the game. No, all I heard from anyone was 'jesus christ, that moment when you get to explore hyrule field for the first time is ridiculous. there goes my year'. Zelda just isn't doing that for people anymore - the wow factor has gone.

You can't have it both ways - you can't say the graphics look great, and when shown some screenshots of what the rest of the market is doing, respond by saying the graphics don't matter. Yes, it will be a good game, and no-one's doubting that - but it's fine to look at that demo video and think 'this isn't blowing me away, and I really, really wish it was.'. People are calling me 'drunk' and 'dumb' and a 'technical prick', but frankly, I think there are some people in this thread who are really deluding themselves into thinking that this game looks great for a 2015 title. It looks fun, yeah, but looks great? Nope.

This thread is getting ridiculous!!

Hyrule ISN'T plain and flat...there are hill, seas, towers, horses and more everywhere. This bitching around is getting crazy.

And what is that with the GTA V comparision?! Yeah its filled with nice little flowers and stuff like that...but thats not content you know.

Wow, a day forward and the game which we haven't seen anything of yet has been ripped to pieces,
and is being compared to the fully finished ps4 remaster of GTAV.

Good going guys.

Every GTA has felt exactly the same with the writing taken from various popular movies. R* makes a quality open world sandbox and thats pretty much it, aside from Red Dead Redemption.

I play mainly for gameplay and Nintendo is the best at it. To try and say that Nintendo of all devs are not on R* level is ridiculous to me. Nintendo is not limited to one style when it comes to games and they have more than proven themselves as an amazing developer devoted to quality with almost every game they make.

Looks amazing.
Here's hoping the world won't be too earth/human-like. I would love to get immersed in a world where I don't know what to expect. That's my only grip with it so far. It kind of looks like the deku-tree or majora's mask's moon would feel out of place in this world.

No one is saying you're not entitled to your bad opinions. What's annoying is harshly criticizing an unfinished, unpolished, off-screen, blurry, low quality segment of footage.

The barren talk goes out the window when I saw those horses. It just so weird having animal in zelda

would be cool if there was hunting in the game. You know, stalk your prey with bow and arrow, then skin and gut the carcass for valuable crafting materials!

Zelda suffers from the problem Star Wars 4-6 had according to Lucas.

We need all shots to be dense! Every single shot needs so much going on.

Dude you sure have a massive ego.

Imagine the Lost Woods being a huge, genuinely confusing and frightening labyrinth of trees.

Has any open world really done forests well? I remember being disappointed by the lack of them in Skyrim.

Witcher 3 could be the one maybe.

Otherwise "The Forest" will probably that for photorealistic real life approximations. But I'm not sure how "big" that is gonna be.

Really? There's been like 20 Zeldas yet. Soooo unique. And R* IS on Nintendo's level and trumps it in presentation (voice actors, in-game-jokes) and writing as well.

First of all, there are changes in most Zelda games, making the game unique.
Secondly, R* is not on Nintendo's level, especially not on EAD's level, and gets trumped easily, especially in the performance area, which is ranging from plain ok (GTAV PS4) to abysmal (GTAV PS3).
Third, are you and some other guys here just jumped on a thread about the gameplay demo of a game you don't like or care about, just to promote your favorite game? Seriously?

There we go!

Is that suppose to be going from the top best to the bottom worst? The vast emptiness of space. Can't get more desolate than that. The Rogue Squardons on the Gamecube looked better than that last gif.

I dont think hunting would fit with zelda.

I don't think that is the barrier, it would be against the whimsical world the director and his team seem to be be constructing here. There are many ways to construct a hunting system unlike other AAA games in the past few years. The closest thing I feel the Zelda games had to a hunting like system was in TP with Link's wolf form. Wolf Link's attacks were vicious and hunting/prey like.

But look at all the explosions and things happening in the background!

Can we put the GTA vs Zelda graphics bullshit into the same gas chamber as the Wii U doomed talk we banned earlier? Can you guys please get a grip? Thank you very much.

To GTA V? In terms of details it is miles ahead over U Zelda as expected.

There's also the Assassin's Creed, Bethesda and Cry games to throw into the comparison pot.

As you very well put, it compares favorably to open world games. The thing is it's comprehensible for some people not be amazed by this. After all these people have been play things on a similar scale for years now.

Also Thunder for a game with lots of grass in past generation consoles look no further than Far Cry 2, it even served an important gameplay purpose for the fire simulation.

I drooled over this in magazines. This exact screen. The dense forest is one of my ultimate Zelda dreams. They had one in the first Twilight Princess trailer but the infamous beta forests just weren't meant to be. It seems now is finally the time. I can't wait.

I like you! I myself have been upset over forests getting cut over and over, that Twilight Princess one looked really cool, so it's nice that we'll probably get a real actual forest this time around.
