Are remasters going to count in GAF's GOTY voting?

The Citizen Kane and RE4 people are being moronic.

Here were the rules last year.

Very simple, you can vote for TLoU or GTA if you did not last year.
So who are the police who are going through that huge thread to make sure people stick to that?

I'm really not sure. Something like TLOU PS4 I would prefer not to be in the running because I don't think it added enough, whereas a full remake like Pokemon ORAS should be counted. Then you have weird cases like Kingdom Hearts 2.5 which includes versions of games that were only released in Japan and have some additional content, but aren't really remakes either.

As long as people who voted for them last year aren't able to this year, I suppose I would be fine either way.

Makes sense, I just want to know how they are going to enforce that rule.
They obviously aren't. Nor do they make sure you've played the games you vote for.

If someone really wants to vote for GTA or TLoU again, obviously they'll try, but who cares? Neither of those games have any chance of winning, it's not going to make any difference.

I didn't vote last year, TLoU and GTA are both better than anything released this year, but I still wouldn't vote for them, because that's not the point of that rule. It's so people who didn't play them can still vote for them. Those people shouldn't be stopped because others are going to abuse the rule.
If it's decided that GTAV PS4 is a significant enough remaster/remake to be eligible, I can vote for it this year, even if I already voted for it last year.
Yeah, you can, if the rules are the same this time.

But regardless, you can if you didn't last time.

Is it a game?

Was it commercially released this year?

Then it should be eligible. I don't give a fuck if that includes remasters, virtual console games or some whacky Dreamcast shmup distributed on bootleg CDs in one German market.

I suspect the rules will be arbitrarily changed this year to avoid the chance of GTA:V or TLoU:R winning. I don't get it, but whatever keeps order I guess.

1st person mode is a change other than "upscaling" though.

GTAV had a fairly substantial upgrade. Was definitely a good deal more than just an HD rerelease.

GOTY 2014 Contenders:

The Last of Us Remastered
Grand Theft Auto V
Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition
The Master Chief Collection
Final FantasyX/X-2 HD
Bayonetta 1 (Wii version)
The Binding of Isaac
Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix
Assassin's Creed Liberation HD
Cel Damage HD

Nah. Why take up candidate slots for games that deserve to be recognised this year?

Of course they count. Re-releases also count in movies. Critics just don't vote for them, because they shouldn't win.

The only way that re-releases would win is if you don't value originality at all -- which, frankly, is a current sharp criticism of the mainstream gaming industry; highly stagnant, conservative, and reliant on classic methods. Take that concept to the extreme, and you get games being re-released with a resolution bump winning "best game of the year."

So, it can win. It's allowed to, just like updated versions of films can win best film of the year. It would make us look very, very silly if it won, however.

Yeah. Pokemon Alpha Sapphire should count, but it really shouldn't win over a newly-released 2014 game.

The only remake this year was Pokemon and only significant remaster is GTA V.

Hopefully no one votes for them though.

We're not updating rules to prevent specific titles from winning. Logistically there is very, very little chance of GTA or TLoU winning anyway.

We've actually been discussing rule changes on this count for a while now.

You and Cheesemeister? I'd like an invite into that discussion. :D

Feels like this needed to be addressed one way or the other given we're straddling two console generations still and lots of re-masters exist.

Personally I'd find it a little depressing if the best thing that came out in 2014 wasn't a 2014 game for most people.

I really hope not. There's so many remastered games this year that the GOTY race will be almost identical to last year's and very, very boring.

Also, it would imply how bad this year was in terms of original games if most people on GAF vote for games that came out last year for this year's GOTY.

It just seems so pointless. Three of the best games I've played that released this year (the other being Minecraft on Vita) will be ineligible, because, well, why?

What is the reason for not allowing them? Because we're worried people might vote for them? I mean, people that don't see the value in remastered titles aren't being forced to vote for them, so why don't they count?

I guess I take issue because as far as I'm concerned, you should be voting for the best game you played that commercially released in 2014. No further caveats needed.

If that was standalone, it would be my GotY...

I don't Left Behind is ineligible?

  • Ports that amount to “ROM dumps”, i.e., ports with no additional content or significant changes
  • Ports that are basically “HD ports” of existing games with no changes besides upscaling the game
  • "GOTY Editions" that simply collect previously-released content into a single package
  • Games that have not officially been released, such as demos or "alphas" and "betas"
  • Games that are incomplete, such as episodic games that have not yet had their final episode released
  • Games localized for your region and released on any platform in 2011 or earlier
  • Games released on PC in a previous year and released on Steam or other sales portals this year
  • Fan translations or other projects making unauthorized use of IP

then again he could change the rules again but whatever. I'm voting for the DLC, you can discredit my list if it makes you happy.

If GTA doesn't count this year, but it counts for PC-GAF next year... I'm going to rage.

It's not a game, it's DLC. I don't know if it counts or not, but I wouldn't vote for it, just because I don't think it counts really. Not that I don't think people should be allowed to though.

i always let remakes in because i felt they were substantial updates to the game. regarding updated games or ollections (such as the orange box or metal gear solid: subsistence), i think those were allowed to be voted on too, although ports were only allowed if you had not played them before. i remember one year where a mortal kombat game was on the wii a year after it had been on the ps2 and xbox, but people could vote for the wii version because that was the one they played first and the one they grew to like.

i think remasters would fall under the definition of port. so if you voted for gta v, rayman legends, tomb raider, or tlou in 2013, you wouldn't be able to in 2014.

So last year I could have voted for Earthbound? Dangit. I guess I can still vote for Bioshock this year.

Games are games. I don't see why they shouldn't count. Some of the remasters did more than the actual sequels that released this year. On top of that, I HIGHLY doubt a remaster would be very high in a GOTY list anyway.

The rules will be updated this year. Don't expect to vote for remastered games.

This is a little ridiculous...2014 hasn't exactly been the best year for games, and The Last of Us: Remastered is easily one of the top 10 games released this year, just as it was last year.

Arbitrarily deciding that they're ineligible is non-sense.

Why even limit it to games released in 2014? Why cant I pick the best game I played in 2014, regardless of when it came out?

They shouldn't. Most of them are lazy cashgrabs to begin with, I just feel like it would encourage developers even further.
