PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

if you haven't already, you might hit up the upscalers, etc. thread.
Here's a wiki page with some info, but not exactly what you're looking for

Thanks!

I tested out the other games I purchased:

Haven: Call of the King
Mad Maestro!
Finny
Mojo!
Viewtiful Joe
Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy
Raw Danger!

All of them output at 480 and looked great, except for the above-mentioned Ico. So that was a relief for sure! I still want to figure out what best to do about PS1 games though!

Got my first PS2 recently. Can anyone recommend me some arcade action games? Things similar to Sin and Punishment, Panzer Dragoon, and Contra would be amazing.

there's a map in my uk edition also i may be mistaken but i don't think PS2 games were sealed with the playstation tab until around atleast 2005-2006, before then i think they might have been just wrapped like normal

also one thing i noticed that the map from both games is 98% identical apart from a couple extra roads here and there, imagine what it would be like if a sequel released today with the exact same world and just different stories for full price

Oh well. This is my copy:

img_15867ncd1.jpg

No map, but at least I got a snazzy WRC print ad. The manual and the back of the box are in German, too (I'm not in Germany and don't speak this language). Perhaps someone who has the same edition of the game could confirm that the map is not included with it?

As for the Playstation-branded packaging, I got the original, non-Director's Cut, edition of Silent Hill 2 and I think it did have that tap, so there's that. Kind of curious about this now.

Rez is a neat rail shooter. The Metal Slug releases and compilations should feed your appetite for Run n' Guns/Contralikes.

i wonder if the game went through a reprint in like 2007, those cases are i think from around 2007/2008 because some fifa 08 or Fifa 09 i bought cheap to gut came in the memory cardless bluecases and the only other new PS2 game i've seen them on is the Jak & Daxter (it was orange but still memory cardless) game in 2009 and my PS2 copy of Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror, Motorstorm might have had this case as well

I think most of my PS2 cases don't have those memory card holders, actually. I won't be able to do a thorough check until tomorrow, but I just went through a few random games and most of them didn't have any holders. Do you think they are all reprints then? According to this thread I found on Google, it sort of depends on the game, some launch titles got memory cards cases and some didn't.

That thread is probably referring to North American PS2 games... so who knows how much that applies to the PAL bluecases?

EU have had them since launch, cases originally started black with the memory card slot then they changed to blue with a memory card slot and eventually dropped the slot

You have 5 games starting with Shadow but you don't have Shadow of Destiny (or Shadow of Memories in other zones)

What a game. One of my favourites from the PlayStation 2.

I thought you might be missing some titles from series because you were strictly curating your library, but then I saw Devil May Cry 2. In that case, you're missing some good games from series you partially own:

Castlevania: Curse of Darkness (unless you have it on Xbox)
We <3 Katamari
Fatal Frame
Fatal Frame 3
Gradius 3 & 4
Mega Man X7
Mega Man X8
Mega Man X: Command Mission
Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams
Prince of Persia: Warrior Within
Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones
Silent Hill 4: The Room
Viewtiful Joe 2

Original suggestions:
Champions of Norrath
Gitaroo Man
motherfucking God Hand
Klonoa 2
Metal Saga
Rez
Skygunner
Space Channel 5: Part 1 and 2
Stretch Panic (lol =[)

Off the top of my head, I'm sure there are a million more I'm criminally forgetting. The PS2 is king.

Far too much love for the PlayStation 2. Metal Gear Solid 2 is still probably my most played game ever. That, MGS3 and FF X will always be in my top lists of anything ever.

Someone posted Klonoa 2, I bought the first one on PSN (which is amazing) - at some point I actually need to PLAY IT AGAIN, then I might have to pick up the second on ebay. K2 was fantastic but super, super short if I remember correctly?

On this note... is there yet a good way to experience the PS2 through an HDTV? I have a component cable, but it's still just not that great - I would have thought that by now there would be some sort of GOOD, fairly cheap upscaler / HDMI adapter sort of thing, but I can't seem to find anything, which I find strange.

Could have sworn I had more PS2 games. I have 162 + 3 PSN PS2 games CVS2, Fatal Frame 1+2

Here are the pictures taken on my Ipad in the basement.

You know when you look at your collection it just looks so small and it doesnt feel as thought you have as much games or interesting games as other people when you have moreo r less the games as them

These custom NTSC spines look so much better than the uniform PAL ones. Although admittedly there's something about those too.

Just finished it for the first time the other day. Felt plenty lengthy, definitely longer than the first game. Plenty of replayability, too! Awesome game.

Yep. Always hated the backs we got here in pal-land. Its the same with the gamecube and wii for some reason, were the ntsc-releases had awesome custom backs, while the pal ones were generic and boring :(

Wasn't Castlevania: Curse of Darkness supposed to be pretty good? I picked up a new copy recently and the game itself is nice enough, but the long empty corridors feel out of place, especially since the main character moves so slowly.

Lament of Innocence was supposed to be the good one. Curse has an awesome soundtrack but thats about it.

Thecoverproject is falling off. I cant get a good cover for Eternal Poison.

I always heard people say Curse was a lot better

Really? Curse had more going for its combat system I guess...but Lament just felt better imo. Plus it wasnt just straight up hallways for the majority of the time. Had some jumping and grapping in too.

On that note, is Nanobreaker really that bad?

It may have been because I played it back when I wasn't really good at those types of action/hack and slash games, but I found it quite frustrating, not really interesting, and unlike DMC I remember blaming the game for my deaths, and not my lack of skill.

It's been a good while since I played it though. I think there was a sort of weapon transformation mechanic that seemed cool but was pretty useless, and you may have been able to add mod chips to upgrade your weapon.

It could have been the worst game to grace the console as far as I know, but I've never been one to find a game that bad, if you get what I mean.

I got it for a couple of quid in Gamestation along with Project Eden when I had to take my copy of Super Smash Bros. Melee back because it kept getting disc read errors and was the only one left in stock. That would have been early, like January, 2006 I think.

I was thinking about getting a PS2 to play all that hidden gems that came for the system here in Japan.
I noticed there is a big difference in price between 70000 and 90000 models, the latter is almost the double.
Which is the reason? And a 90000 is more a worth than a 70000?

the 70000 models can run homebrew, 90000 models cannot. The 90000 models also have a different BIOS (hence the lack of homebrew) and hardware layout. If you don't plan on using homebrew, the 90000 is probably the better machine, but I'd just go with whichever you can find cheap.

Hey guys, I'm Interested in running the PCSX2 emulator soon, I've never done it before however I'm very Interested.

I ordered Final Fantasy XII already and I'm currently looking at this game:

Ape Escape 3: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Ape-Esca...t=AU_PC_Video_Games_Games&hash=item3cede70f66

$40 isn't exactly a steal, I could probably go cheaper, I'm just curious to those that have played it...is it as good as the first one?(The 1st one is probably one of my favourite games on the PS1)

If you had to choose, Ape Escape 2 or 3?

Thread's been pretty dead lately... Got a question for you folks.

I want to play my PS1/PS2 library on something other than a CRT. I understand that this isn't always the best way to go. I'm thinking to buy a PS3 for its library and PS2/1 compatibility, so one of the early models.
My actual question is: Is there a list of all the games worth a damn that have issues on PS3? Also, does the PS3 upscale the 240p signal so that my HDTV/Monitor can run it, or do I still need to worry about that?

Thanks in advance.

What I loved about the PS2 was how great Pro was (Pro Evolution Soccer, I hate calling it PES!).

This to me led to so many nights with my friends playing tournaments until the early hours of the morning every Friday night, and because we were all decent on it there was no predicting who would win.

Then you have the amazing games like MGS 2, Jak & Daxter 1, SOTC, Rogue Galaxy, FF XII etc.

What a machine. I did own an Xbox at the time which graphically was better, but games wise the PS2 couldn't be matched.

The greatest console that ever was and ever will be.

I just regret that I probably missed out on so many amazing games, because I went through like a 2-3 year period during the 7th gen (my late teens) where I was just out all the time hooking up with my female teenage counterparts, so I didn't play many games.

Sad thing is, I couldn't play them now because they look awful on HDTVs and they just never seem to be right on the PC emulator.

Not the best console by any means, but I'm certainly enjoying going through some of the exclusives I missed out on.

Wonderful. Thank you kindly.

Unrelated Followup: Is there such a thing as a component to HDMI or DVI adapter? Amazon is really not liking my search terms.

There is, but it's not ideal unless you can get it for about $20 or so. After that, you're better off just buying a new display (with component inputs).

Is it a good idea to track down component-to-HDMI cables? Do the games look THAT much better?

It's not, and the games will NOT look better. If anything the picture quality will be somewhat distorted.

Just my two cents here, but I'd take a few precautionary steps if you're thinking about getting a BC PS3. YLOD is a huge problem with the old fat models and, as far as I know, every single one of them will eventually fail due to the non-lead soldering used in the system. My old 80GB finally got YLOD last summer (I already had to replace the blu-ray drive twice in the past) and I was really bummed. I went ahead and reluctantly hooked up my PS2 again, but it was a blessing in disguise because that's when I modded it and started using the internal hard drive which is loads better than playing games from the PS3 (forcing 480p on something like OPL gave me better results than the PS3 upscaler) and you don't have very many compatibility issues (maybe three or four games out of my 400+ gave me trouble on the 80GB -- and that was software emulation).

That being said, if you are set on getting a BC PS3, I'd try to find one that's been "reballed" or "reflowed," which solves YLOD until it inevitably happens again down the road. I'm just waiting around to find a place locally that'll do it for me and then I'll eventually go back to it.

Of course, YMMV. There are plenty of people who still have fatties that are working like the day they bought them. I'm just convinced that all of them are ticking time bombs, sadly.

congrats on the sex tho

Ok thanks for the heads up.

And is rouge galaxy worth tracking down/buying off of the JP-PSN?

The greatest game memories of my life are socom 2 clan battles until 7am and grand theft auto 3 for the first time

Oh man, I'm with you on GTA III.

From literally the start of the game, I had an "OMG" moment. I remember my friend was sat next to me, I put the game in, we saw the first cut scene, then from the moment you get in the car and drive down the rest of the bridge, it felt like heaven to control. A real, living breathing city, and I can drive around it. I just starting overwhelmingly saying "OMG! OMG! This... is fucking awesome."

Another great memory was Dynasty Warriors 2 and spending 7 days as a jobless teenager just getting up, playing it for 16 hours straight, with about 10 cups of coffee in between, while trying to level every character to max.

Ahhh... pre-7th gen gaming. It was heaven.
