Say goodbye to your little amiibo friends........

Embarrassing. They should have stated which would be limited availability.

It hardly needs stating. Anyone could have told you that Marth, Wii Fit Trainer and Villager were going to be the least popular/manufactured Amiibo from Wave One.

Heres a cheat sheet for the upcoming waves, from most to least popular (and therefore common to rare/most likely to be discontinued);

Wave Two

Luigi
Zelda
Diddy Kong
Captain Falcon
Pit
Little Mac

Wave Three

Bowser
Lucario (retailer exclusive)
Sonic
Toon Link
Rosalina and Luma (retailer exclusive)
King Dedede
Meta Knight (retailer exclusive)
Mega Man
Sheik
Ike
Shulk (retailer exclusive)

Expect Pit, Little Mac, Shulk, Sheik and Mega Man to dissapear just as quickly.

I love the Amiibo figures but this is precisely why I decided a few weeks ago to forgo buying and collecting them. I'm not going to deal with this type of BS.

I REALLY want these things but not if I'm going to have trouble finding a bunch of them after the day they release. So, forget it.

I got my Samus, so I'm done with Amiibo collecting until Shulk shows up, but this really baffles me. Activision and Disney have already demonstrated with Skylanders and Infinity how to properly release and distribute the collectible NFC figure product reasonably so everyone who wants a particular figure can get it eventually. Nintendo had a model to follow that two other major companies had already done right, so what the hell happened?

Even though I didnt wait either of those 3 I still feel bummed that if I EVER thought about buying them in the future, I wouldnt be able to :(

Nintendo is very stupid like that. I feel like they just want to do it their own way no matter what, even if their method is considerably worse than what others are doing.

Then again, Nintendo is probably more aware of the ACTUAL demands of their products than people on message boards. Even if everyone on the forum wanted a copy its still a relatively low # and shouldnt be confused for actual demand.

Yeah... I don't think Nintendo has any idea what to do with Amiibo. What else supports them? HW and MK8?

If they aren't going to have them compete with Skylanders/Disney, what te hell was the big point with them other than being collectibles and lvl11 smash CPU's?

Captain toad, Yoshi's woolly world, Mario Maker, And Mario Party 10 will support them

This sure is a great idea. Think of how much more successful Skylanders would be if Activision had just kept people from being able to buy them. Stupid Activision, making more money by selling more things. They'll never learn.

Nintendo artificially limiting supply to drive up demand is really slimy of them...

a year ago, if you told gaf "nintendo will release a wii fit trainer toy and demand will drastically outstrip supply," many people would have said that it was impossible, and no one would want her. It's a fighting game character taken from a casual exercise game. They probably expected the figures to go to compulsive collectors and little kids. If we had to pick one figure to be really unpopular with the little kids, it's this one.

Therefore, I find it really hard to blame them for expecting her to be unpopular, at least. I feel somewhat the same about Villager.

Now, Marth, he's a character like fox and captain falcon: currently known more as a smash staple than for his actual games. I'm a little surprised he wasn't more common. I guess they expected the popular ones to be defined entirely by what little kids would buy rather than any element of long-time smash players.

They're still profiting. It's about money in the end so it doesn't matter who buys them so long as they're bought.

You know, sensible customer-facing corporations try to make as much money without fucking over their customers too much.

But of course, we're talking about Nintendo here. Being a Nintendo customer is essentially the gaming equivalent of an abused wive.

I'll just buy a meta knight because I always like that design. And by buying I mean I will reserve it at 10 different outlets several months before actual release which I will need to do since Nintendo just made scalpers and assorted scum wet their knickers.

Also what if these introduce people into a Wii U...what if then people decide to complete a collection you limit them already...I just don't understand it.

Retailers will still carry Amiibo it will just be Mario, Link, DK, Pikachu the money makers Best Buy has no incentive to keep obscure characters on the shelf when they carry more Mario, and Pikachus

This is such bullshit. Now I'm going to have all this anxiety about which Amiibos to pre-order.

Saying that, waiting on Amazon to restock Captain Falcon and Ike so I can pre-order immediately.

"Doesn't make sense?" What? This makes perfect sense. The demand for a Villager amiibo is going to be absolutely zero in the next couple of months. Do you think they are planning on a big villager amiibo integrated game soon or something? No.

This first batch is literally made entirely for Smash Bros. They are keeping on the "big ones" because they're usable in other games. Who (apart from diehards) will want to go out to the store to buy a Wii Fit Trainer amiibo come February?

It's not worth it for them to keep manufacturing ones that are going to have a limited window of demand (the next couple months). That being said, sure they could have made a few more in the initial batch.

Neither Activision nor Disney are in such dire financial straits. I honestly can't blame them for discontinuing unpopular characters, although I wish their communication were more clear. Also, they probably could have made a few more Marths and Villagers and not taken a hit.

Does anyone think Nintendo plans to not support these Amiibo's for future games?

Or maybe even making version2 of the popular figures when Mario Kart 9 or Smash Wii U 2 comes out and not allowing the version1 work with those games.

It's just dumb. There's very obviously still demand for these figures, so I very much doubt that Nintendo would have a problem to sell a second or third shipment to retailers. Instead it makes the impression that Nintendo wants to force their die hard fans to buy as many figures as possible once they are released. Which probably even works out in their favor so far.

I wish EB Games would put Shulk up for preorder already. I know he's going to be one of the limited ones, so I'd like to preorder him as soon as possible.

A bit off-topic, but it's been confirmed that GameStop is getting another shipment next week and I doubt they're special here.

Thank you for telling em this, I missed it otherwise. Have fun chasing those 'Mibo

alright, seeing as these are going to be limited, I'll be buying Shulk, Ike, and Mega man. Those are the only 3 that interest me really

So far the only ones that are hard to find are Marth, wft, and villager. The others are still readily available. They need space for the next couple of waves too since retail space is limited.
They should sell them online, but i imagine they don't want to keep producing figures for some characters that wouldn't sell if it wasn't rare
It isn't? I thought it was only sold out at the Gamestop I was.
February wave

Can't say I care about amiibos. This actually makes me happy since chances are amiibos will not have any big/meaningful function in future games. I hope.

So something that's popular their going to stop production....seems logical.

Dammit. I hate this artificial exclusivity. Because...it works. Nothing has motivated me to want to go and buy these Amiibos than knowing that I won't be able to someday. But I'm too poor to be spending money like that! D:

Yeah, that tracks with each and every one of the decisions Nintendo's made over the past 30 years. Like being the only fully backwards compatible system of the last few generations. And letting you use all your old controllers with their new system. Having reasonably priced DLC that's bursting at the seams with content. Like shipping games that are complete and don't require 40 gig day one patches or have 100% broken online. Like how they've kept supporting the Wii U even with multitudes of people [morons] saying they should kill it quietly and cut their losses. Nintendo's always screwing over the consumer trying to make an extra buck.

Seriously?

You guys need to choose 3 random characters or room for wave 2. you cant have your cake and eat it too. If those three characters are limited supply why would they restock it when they have 30+ characters to release. I expect the rest of wave 1 to slowly be phased out as well except for the obvious ones the article mentions. I swear some of you claim nintendo makes no sense but you don't try to make any sense of your own.

Nintendo "We don't want to make money".

Jesus Christ.

Rather: we don't want to overproduce, so that we won't have to give half of them away for a few bucks. *cough* Ubisoft "Limited" editions *cough*

This way they will probably sell every single one for full price. Makes sense to me. Next batch will sell out even faster, because people (including scalpers) expect it to be limited (which it probably is). And it also creates news as in "5 types of amiibos totally sold out, prices are rising, buy your Wii U + amiibo now, otherwise you will miss out".
