Say goodbye to your little amiibo friends........

Here's the thing: yes, they were available for pre-order for months, but I don't make a lot of money. I couldn't pre-order them.

I understand that Nintendo shouldn't be expected to manufacture Marth and Wii Fit Trainer for years but how about a few MONTHS? Like, is it so crazy to have the option to purchase these figures a couple months after launch?

It's honestly not a huge deal for me. I'm more annoyed than angry. Nintendo has made the entire Amiibo decision very simple for me - I'm not investing my time and many into any of them. Life goes on. They, along with Sony and MS, have plenty of games coming next year that I'll put my money towards instead.

The best part is not it's not even Xmas yet.

months is too much time when you realize the still need to release the rest of the roster and likely have more amiibo planned for other games.

You're too slow

Gotta be there day 1, front of the line, when the stores open up
Only serious collectors and luck consumers get Marth lol

Not even joking, I got my Marth a few mins after midnight with my copy of SSBWiiU, lol.

I was planning on holding off, I happened to have found a Gamestop gift card with $12 and had some change in my pocket....

I'm sad now, just started collecting amiibos, and haven't been able to find Marth or Villager at all in my my small city. Please Nintendo make even just one more shipment :(.

Next time I'm gonna make sure I get the characters I want on time, this sucks that they are gonna limit some like this.

"Doesn't make sense?" What? This makes perfect sense. The demand for a Villager amiibo is going to be absolutely zero in the next couple of months. Do you think they are planning on a big villager amiibo integrated game soon or something? No.

This first batch is literally made entirely for Smash Bros. They are keeping on the "big ones" because they're usable in other games. Who (apart from diehards) will want to go out to the store to buy a Wii Fit Trainer amiibo come February?

Not quite true since they also work in Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors. Some will also work in Captain Toad (whenever Nintendo feels like it).

I think people might be over-reacting a bit here. These are collectable figures. If they discontinue the Gamecube controller adapter though...that would be infuriating.

I don't have room to collect entire waves of these figures and keep them in collectible condition. If I get any it'll probably be Link and Bowswer, neither of which I expect to experience shortages.

So the question is "Do I sell my sealed Villager and WFT amiibos now, or in a couple of months?"

Usually safest to sell into hype than to try and squeeze out some extra money in the long run. Even if they become discontinued there are still enough that you won't be seeing WFT at $100 on ebay.

You guys are a bit loopy if you think that they will lock the digital content behind only certain waves.

When the next Star Fox game comes out, if Wave 1 Star Fox is discontinued, they'll release a new Star Fox Amiibo with a different pose. This is smart. It lets the people who like Star Fox to get now two different versions, it makes them limited and collectable (oh, you have that first wave Star Fox, cool!), and it sells to those who simply weren't into Amiibos when the first Star Fox Amiibo came out.

This is how figure collecting is, guys. You miss the release window, they're gone. Your character will get another release. It might not be the same pose, or the same outfit, or whatever, but it will get another release, so if you like the one that's out now, buy buy buy.

I think Amiibos are ugly, cheap, and pointless, but this is honestly a great strategy from Nintendo. I mean, look over in the FigureGAF thread. We have people who bought them SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY WERE BECOMING RARE. They were trash talking them earlier, and now, boom, sold. Damn, Nintendo, you smart.
That would make a lot of business sense, indeed.

You know, this would make a great Jingle All The Way sequel. Just replace Turbo Man with amiibos. If only that other sequel with Larry the Cable Guy didn't exist.

I've never even seen a Marth/Villager amiibo and I was in a Best Buy and two GameStops on release day.

I've preordered all of Wave 2 and will be preordering as much of Wave 3 as I can, if not all of it. To hell with being left out in the cold again.

I can understand why they aren't making a ton but there is obviously demand.

edit: All this really does is vindicate the whiners in that other thread saying it was an "investment" :(

Nintendo artificially limiting supply to drive up demand is really slimy of them...

It's their oldest sales strategy on console. During the first half of the NES's life my parents hated them for it.

Better preorder Shulk folks. I already have the ones I want. Might want Pit and Toon Link, but I'd like to think those will always be available.

I was going to say something along the lines of "forget any of the low print run figures getting worthwhile functionality attached to them!" But then I remembered they're planning on making cheaper versions used for the "DLC" side of things. All part of the plan I suppose.

Screw wave 1 anyways. If I can find myself a C. Falcon, all is well with the world.

Sour grapes? You decide!

The world of figurine collecting is obviously not for the faint-hearted. If you just want to have fun with your favourite Nintendo characters, buy some of them, but if you want to collect them ALL, you'll have to pay. I chose to avoid them and just bought one Yoshi, because he is cool. ;-)

Is that all they are, though? Nintendo promoted and advertised these as a game enhancing experience. Train your Amiibo, fight your Amiibo, etc. Fans of certain figures won't be able to get that same experience because they are discontinued within a month? Really hope they don't get back injuries with how low they are stooping.

Everything about the amiibos is like "who is in charge of this program?"

Due to shelf space constraints, other figures likely will not return to the market once they have sold through their initial shipment,” read the full statement.

"Shelf space constraints"

Remember, this is NOT just Nintendo intentionally constraining demand to retailers, as they have done for decades.

This totally isn't that.

It's all the other stuff. The non-incriminating stuff. Focus on that.

If you want those Amiibos so bad why dont you buy them while they are still available sitting on retail shelves or online

I dont see the issue here

this, seriously. see one you want? buy it/pre order it. dont get mad later that the one you passed up is no longer available. after my initial amiibo purchase, i read on gaf that marth is hard to come by. i found one on release day, and guess what i did? after reading this, guess what im going to do for wave 2/3?

The hell are you talking about? If you plan on making such erroneous claims you better back that shit up.

Given the way they were designed, having Amiibo figures that are in low supply for hype is a good way to ensure they sell well to collectors.

But this does not seem like the route to go if they wanted success similar to Skylander/Infinity figures.

Has it been publicly been spoken as to how well amiibos in general are selling? All this hubbub makes it seem they may not be doing very well.

There's another thread right now about nintendo's profits skyrocketing due to some absurdly positive amiibo sales forecast. Shortchanging stores on one-quarter of the the first wave of characters doesn't mean shit when the others are in ready supply.

They're not discontinued

Argh, this is getting infuriating. This Nintendo can't get their message straight with everyone saying something different. It reeks of Microsoft not being able to say the same thing about always online.

That's true. I suppose I mean for the likes of Villagr, WFT, and Marth. They are made completely for Smash 4, so making a lot of them after the initial shipment for Smash 4 doesn't make a whole lot of sense without extremely high demand.

And sure, demand on GAF is high. But demand for everything on GAF is high. :P

For the less popular characters they cant just be making endless shipments for them. They're making a bunch of these. They have to make 51 amiibo just for smash bros then move on to the next game.

Didn't you know? Retailers let companies dictate how their shelf space is used. Heck, the WalMart near me gave into Nintendo's demand to have the shittiest mid-aisle shelf in the store.

I don't think WFT is THAT rare. I see that amiibo just about everywhere I go.

Use proper vocabulary when you speak please. I've no clue what you are saying about the shelf

Figurines are making a lot of money. Skylanders, Amiibo and Disney Infinity are supposed to generate 1 billion$ in revenue this year and Nintendo's post a 36 billion yen profit this quarter.

Common sense says that Ninteod won't keep producing all Amiibos indefinitely. Clearly, the ones with lower demand will be the first to go. In spite of whatever demand exists on GAF and among collectors, Marth and WFT probably have very low demand and therefore can't keep taking up shelf space.
