What's the absolute worst game of 2014 you played?

Shit was mostly broken and I ended up giving up on it and returning it. Gutted as well because I thought it was going to tickle the same buttons as PGR4 did but unfortunately... it didn't.

Shit's hot, now. I just picked it up a few days ago and it's an absolute blast. The launch is obviously inexcusable, so nobody can blame you.

I probably played a worse phone or flash game at one point but despite the negative opinion this is gonna get, I gotta say the biggest one for me was The Evil Within. I've never felt more ripped off by a game in my life, and I've been playing games for nearly 3 decades. HUGE disappointment for me. Although I recognize some people just love that game, and that's fine, I think it's filled with some real garbage game design decisions.

Maybe you should start adding "good gameplay" to your ideas of what makes an awesome game.

Then you will realize Assassin's Creed isn't for you, and move on to something you enjoy.

That is the thing, i always want/hope for it to have good gameplay. when i listed good concept i was specifically referring to the gameplay concepts... like the free roaming parkour and combat and sneaking around. i love all that stuff... somehow shadow of mordor got it right but you are 100% correct and that is why i listed this game. Trust me, i'm mad at myself for picking it up but to be fair I got it for free with my 970 otherwise i would have never bought it.

Lookin at the list of games I bought this year, I'd have to say Lightning Returns.

I only played it for a few hours, and I didn't think it was bad at all, but I generally only buy games I know I'll like.

D4. Sorry Gaf but you tricked me. I didn't enjoy it. You should understand its niche and isn't going to appeal to a lot of people instead of saying "OMG don't even look it up just buy it because its amazing."

I think some people here are confusing "worst" with "biggest regret". For me it was TMNT: Out of the Ooze
Why would you play something so terrible? You're just criticizing people for having better taste/judgement.

Like the guy that said Mario Kart 8, some people just know what they like and play it pretty safe.

Interesting question. One of the reasons I come here is to read impressions and reviews so I usually don't buy bad games.

So, every game I played this year was supposed to be at least decent, so I didn't end up with "Rambo", however ...

The worst 2014 game I played ended up being "Mercenary Kings", which I really wanted to like, but the controls were the exact opposite of what I expected from a game that looked like NES Contra. They were slow, clunky and inaccurate. I really couldn't recommend it.

Thief.

As a fan of the good old games of the frachise I just pretend that game never existed.
A great example of "it ruined the franchise".

I have been lucky in that I have enjoyed almost every game I played this year. I finally got around to playing Knack, and utterly despised it, but that was a 2013 release. I suppose The Evil Within was the worst game I have played this year, but even then that was OK until the final third of the game (after which it was fucking awful) I suppose Borderlands TPS would also be up there. Nothing really wrong with it, just a boring and soulless copy/paste expansion of B2.

EDIT: I completely forgot about Thief (thank you Shock_Wave for the reminder), EASILY the worst game of 2014. I once had to walk 3km with a broken ankle and it was more fun than playing Thief.

GerAlt-Right. Ciriously.
Evil Within was my biggest disappointment. I hated the letterbox framing so much I had to sell it.

I would say Thief but I didn't expect it to be great.

A toss up between Transformers Rise of the Dark Spark or Killzone ShadowFall

Transformers was just awful and Killzone very boring, Killzone is my biggest disappointment this gen as I loved KZ3

Give it another shot when it comes to Plus, you'll find it tickles that PGR itch perfectly.

Destiny for me. Went from enjoying to fucking hating in record time. Thanks to Destiny, I'll never buy a game from PSN (except small indie games) or a season pass.

Same. Love -> loathing! I'll never pre-order again. Ever. In fact, Destiny squelched a lot of hype I had for other games coming out like Bloodborne or NMS. Will be waiting for reviews 100%, and then probably extra time to see how the community opinion shakes out.

Probably Destiny. Played it with friends and man... that final boss fight was just so anticlimactic. I don't even know whats going on with that game now.

Binding of Isaac was the biggest surprise for me. Incredibly addicting and I usually can't stand how difficult roguelikes are.

I can't decide whether the people naming games like Destiny or Shadow of Mordor are dumb for not playing very many games this year, or if I'm the one who's dumb for clearly playing enough games (or not doing enough research, or taking a flyer on some questionable games) that some awful ones snuck in.

I'm probably the one who's dumb

Watch_Dogs is the only game I've bought that released this year and turned out to be mediocre. I usually like Ubisoft releases and it wasn't a bad game, it played well and had some neat ideas, but the majority of the game was uninspired 'been there, done that' open-world gameplay. I got bored halfway through because I felt I had seen everything the game had to offer, so I didn't finish it. The inevitable sequel has potential though.

Technical problems and disappointments aside 2014 has been a surprisingly decent year. Nothing extraordinary got released, but the only AAA games I can think of where people who played it generally agreed the core experience was bad are Thief and The Evil Within.

People don't play many games here or they are just naming games that will piss off people.

Infamous Second Son - I really didn't like it at all. Another mediocre Sucker Punch open world game.
No offence but the hell did you expected from it if you never liked Infamous in the past? The formula it's quite clear from awhile. It's just how someone to complain of Mario to be a platform. In all honesty I think it's the best Infamous released, far away to be the worst game of 2014.
Back to thread, I can't say in all honesty. I haven't found particularly great game this year, and in the other front not that terrible too.

Destiny.

I love parts of it but it was the most disappointing purchase of the year for me.

Yeah I think this is it. Well, I feel like it's harsh to say because I probably played it for 60+ hours in total, but a lot of it was farming and redoing things over and over while being bored. Kind of like Dragon Age Inquisition, except Inquisition doesn't run out of new content after 10 hours.

Lords of the Fallen for me. I'm sure there's a good game in there somewhere but I'll never see it because it crashes every 15 minutes!!

Oh gosh, haha... well, this should not be taken to mean that the game was bad, but Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. I didn't really play any games that I hated, so I have to give this dubious title to a game that was by far the most underwhelming and disappointing to me. For all that it lacked compared to previous iterations, it did not feel as though it made up for it with its stage quality or single-player mode quality. The trophies were also a massive disappointment, and while this is only a personal problem, as a fan of Wario - especially one of Land - I found the Wario content to be ridiculously poor and limited. We got like, one new song and an Assist Trophy.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. I really wanted to like it more, but it felt like such a sloppy game. I guess I had fun with it in the end but compared to XIII 1&2 I didn't think it was that great. I did like the soundtrack, combat, final boss, and ending through.

played this year:
Bioshock 1, Alan Wake, Far Cry 4, Assassins Creed Liberation HD, Watch Dogs, Dragon Age Inquisition(almost finished),Of Orcs and Men, Styx and Divinity OS + lot of great indies

And even though it breaks my heart as i love DA:O and even like DA2 to some degree - i must say DA:Inquisition - the all-embracing MMO-like design disgusts me and the PC UI/controls is horrible. I just had more enjoyment out of "Of Orcs and Men" than from DA:I for some strange reason

I think its because games like D4 don't sell... so if you like it, you REALLY like it and want everyone else to buy it too. But not everyone is going to like something so extremely odd and I can respect that. Watch some gameplay for yourself next time and see if it clicks!

Binding of Issac. WTF is that..?

I'm curious, what don't you like about it? I abstained from playing the original because it seemed boring and then a friend urged me to try it and I was hooked.

Definitely Shadow of Mordor. I couldn't get more than 5-6 hours into the game and could not understand what the reviews/player impressions were on about. The world is boring, the gameplay is mashfest (especially coming fresh off of Bayonetta 2), and the story didn't hook me in the slightest. The level design is terrible as well, as has been mentioned by many.

More power to those who enjoyed it.

Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z.

Just a trash game all around.

Edit: The best part of these threads are the people saying "That game isn't that bad! Why don't you stop being a hipster and play some REAL bad games!!!"

Worst: Rambo - Pretty self-explanatory
Most Disappointing: Smash Wii U - It is a great game, but the single player is so bad, which is one of the things I love doing most in Smash games.

BoI is completely not fun to me I regret even trying it again on PS4. I'm not gonna give it another chance. I was annoyed that I spent $2 on it. I don't get the love for it.

I know a friend that put 800 hours into the original and got all the achievements and still plays the new one. I still don't get it.

This. Some of the responses here are trying just a bit too hard to be "controversial". "Popular game is the worst I've played all year!". Ok.
might be because of insane hypes, huge amount of money spent and in the end lackluter titles for some

Easily Titanfall I hated the bots and the titans.

Wasn't / Isn't there a pilots only mode?

I need to pick the game up so I can try Horde mode.

I'd feel bad saying Watch Dogs or Thief..lol.

I paid $4.50 for Thief and got Watch Dogs for free. I'd probably be pissed if I paid $60 for them.

The Binding of Isaac (both Rebirth and the original) are games that encourage replaying it, as every play through is different from the last. It challenges you to win, and do so without a guarantee that you may get a killer item to carry you to victory. There are a number of different builds that you can create, so typically, you will find yourself with a fairly unique build from what you once had.
