4chan is great if you don't take it too seriously and you're not a complete newfag. (posting 4chan stuff on facebook and shit like that)

4chan pluses:
-great porn
-funny gifs
-awesome wallpapers
-great to play Mario Kart tournaments
-great time killer
-spooky stuff on /x/
-pretending to be a retarded console warrior on /v/ to counter-troll them
-the neogaf hate (is hilarious)

4chan cons:
-gore
-newfags
-weird porn

do you really care what a bunch of anonymous people laugh at you on the internet?
even when you are anonymous too?
Thanks for bringing that kind of language to this forum. :/

Didn't someone do a ethnicity/sexuality/etc breakdown of 4chan and actually found that it was one of the more diverse websites on the internet? Especially in terms of sexuality.

I remember reading a pretty in-depth article about it about a year ago.
It doesn't matter to me if it is a gay guy talking about f*****s or some straight guy/girl. It's still offensive.

you seem cool

haha, touché.

I don't like the gore and weird stuff, but I won't post in their threads complaining about it.
Like newfags do

oh, I'm sorry, as we're talking about 4chan, I thought "4chan slang" was convenient to make my point.
it doesn't really mean "gay" in the context it's used there.

if it offends you somehow, I can remove those words.

also, I love "filename threads".

Usually people that say its shit have only been to /b/ and the other bad boards. I like /mu/ (even thought there can be some shitty threads its one of the only good places to have discussions about a lot of music) and /co/ which is really nice and a lot of fun and a few others which aren't polluted by all the 14 years olds that just discovered the site.

Thank you for trying to be considerate of others. =)

As others have said before, the meaning of the word doesn't suddenly change just because 4chan uses it in a different way. Just because it has a different meaning there doesn't mean that it's cool to use everywhere else.

yeah, you're right about that. I'll keep it in mind and again, sorry.

It was so much better about seven years ago.

Now it's pretty irrelevant and played out, not much original coming out of there anymore.

Considering most of the stuff that is dredged up on Reddit is directly from 4chan and then it spreads everywhere else I'd argue that it's Reddit that doesn't come up with it's own content.

Really? That's surprising. I'd love a link, if you have it.

I'm partial to those images where you like...design characters or have a certain amount of points to spend on a house or stuff like that. Not sure what the word for them is.

EDIT: Like this

I think every internet user of age should be sentenced to a bare minimum of 12 hours of /b/, so they get desensitized.

I think the internet would be a much more chill place if no one got shocked anymore.

I like it. I'll contribute to threads extremely rarely, I mainly go there to laugh. I only started using it earlier this year after hearing about how awful it is for the longest time, and it ain't no thing at all. Like, I'm sure there's a few people there who are genuinely as racist, sexist or as much of an asshole as their posts make them seem, but the majority are very clearly taking the piss. There's also plenty of good boards and threads where you can have a proper discussion.

It's just dumb and I love it. Scrolling through and seeing someone starting a dubs thread will always make me laugh.

I put them in the Trick Trick category (along with reddit) of never bringing their name up in any capacity. Nothing good comes of discussing their name in such a negative capacity and besmirching their reputation. They can and will dox the ever loving shit out of anybody that attacks them in any capacity.

I put neogaf in this same category for years until I finally decided to bite the bullet and hope that everyone is nice here.

So to reiterate I'm not speaking ill of ***** and ****** in any capacity. My opinion is they are great places to discuss stuff.

/mu/ is a great place to discover new music. It's just a shame everyone there is an egotistical asshole. They have some pretty funny self-deprecating comics/images sometimes though.

I miss old /x/

God, this. There used to be some great creepy stuff there, now it's all stupid conspiracy theory and tarot bullshit.

Went down the shitter after 2007 or so.

Was participating actively there from about the beginning of 4chan till 2007, now just lurking once in a while, but you can really see how most boards consists of a different generation nowadays.
I feel old.

I don't get shocked. I still consider it as insensitive if someone uses slurs against LGBT people or people of different colour than your own. It's not okay to do that. If you want do it there on 4chan, okay, but don't bring it outside of that site.

I don't frequent 4chan, but I appreciate their lack of censorship, especially whenever I see legitimate discussions or people getting banned left and right on sites like this one.

I love 4chan humour. it's hilarious and outrageous at the same time.

This is one of the funniest shit that I know of.

😂 I love stuff like this

I will also confess that Shrek is Love, Shrek is Life thread variants nearly always have me in tears too

It's scary. Honestly, all boards feel /pol/-ish and that's why I can't believe people say it's better than Reddit, where small subreddits can be well moderated and friendly.

Boards vary in quality and I find myself annoyed with the people sometimes(happens everywhere on the internet for me), but I feel like I've gotten a lot out of my time there when it came to expanding my tastes.

Fun fact: two different times (so like half of the time) I've seen NeoGAF get trashed on /v/, I've randomly seen someone compliment me specifically as "one of the good ones" when that topic comes up. It's very flattering and kind of weird. I'm assuming it's someone who already posts on this board.

I was actually drawn back to /v/ only recently with the recent mod drama that linked into what would become "GamerGate" (a friend of mine browses it and told me about it). I actually used to post/browse on /v/ a lot during my FFXI days (that game is perfect for multi-tasking for better or worse). All in all, it was pretty terrible by most metrics (especially since there are few things I dislike more than people bitching and whining about videogames, especially for secondary out-of-game reasons) and only got worse and worse and worse. It undeniably better today than when I stopped browsing it completely.

It's weird knowing that I've seen the rise of memes (I generally disliked) like ">implying", brofist, the green frog comics totally changing in meaning, face images being ripped right out of various mspaint comics to also change in meaning, fucking dubs - dubs actually made me quit 4chan (well, it was the final straw). At one point, literally ever thread was "dubs" and I just decided since I never really liked posting there in the first place (although arguing is as addicting as always) I really need to stop going there (plus to avoid spoilers). Anyway... it just a little weird seeing these jokes all around the internet and thinking "I was, like, standing there x number of years ago when that became a thing - and I thought it was stupid as fuck".

The most tragic board was /co/. I'm not sure what it is like now, but following it from its inception, in short order it went from a legit comic board with some cartoons to 90% about cartoons to just the most vile fetish stuff and shitty artists pandering to deviant losers with said fetishes (and this was before My Little Pony really hit it big, I can't fathom what that was like). Getting pissed just thinking about it. It had more loli and waifu content than /a/. I've had always blindly hated /a/ for reasons like that, but now it is my favorite board (in fact the only board I really visit or bother to post in). Threads about particular manga are great. I read Bleach just for /a/; the esoteric humor that comes from dealing with Kubo's nonsense is just wonderful. I also really like their regular One Piece, (manga) JoJo, Hunter x Hunter threads (along with Berserk, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, etc., any stuff I like).

I've never really posted or looked at /b/ nor felt the need to. /v/ became /b/ only a few months after I joined anyway.

To close off my rambling, the "catalog" is probably the most amazing feature they added after my time. It completely changes the dynamic (although I imagine this detracts from the classic 4chan experience, as terrible as it was). I probably wouldn't bother without it.

EDIT: Something that I pissed me off at the time, which I'm reminded of whenever I see it today: Whenever people post 4chan screencaps, there's always that useless reply that adds nothing. For example, that popular (but terrible) Miyamoto-Zelda one, I think there's a reply that says "He's right!". This is, no doubt, that's the guy who took the picture in the first place and wanted to immortalize his anonymous self.

/sp/ during international sporting events (most playoffs/championships as well) is one of my favorite things in life.

The most obvious advice is to stay away from /b/ and /v/; you're likely to find something you like in one of the hobby boards.

I remember visiting 4chan regularly.
Really wasn't for me, it was exhausting and depressing. Felt like all the negative energy rose to the top and people say they're just joking but since it's anonymous, it rings hollow. Being there long enough, felt like people would absorb the negativity as the truth. I mean, people can say it's unfiltered but I feel the culture there encourages more cynicism then normal cause that stirs the pot the most. Lots of stuff just being said to provoke a reaction so it's frequently insincere and oppressively cynical.

I still hung around until I don't remember what it was, think it was vile pics of dead animals and I freaked out. Most of the other anons casually dismissed it, saying "oh, /b/ got out of their cage again" or somesuch. I mean, I saw a bunch of weird porn before that but I never want to get acclimated to dead stuff. Just never went back after that. After some time, realized I didn't like the person I was becoming from posting on 4chan. Like, you're supposed to separate who you are when you're anonymous with who you are in real life but I made casually racist remarks because I was obviously joking and cringe at thinking about it now.

It's scary. Honestly, all boards feel /pol/-ish and that's why I can't believe people say it's better than Reddit, where small subreddits can be well moderated and friendly.

Not all boards are /pol/ish. Most smaller single interest boards laugh at the Neo-Nazis, and /mu/ is generally really progressive and tolerant of anybody who can articulate their tastes well.

I've been going to 4chan sporadically for nearly a decade while this was certainly true at one point, it's not any more. There's racist/sexist/-ist bullshit on everything from /trv/ to /wg/. /r9k/ is a misogyny board and /pol/ is basically a front for the KKK.

What people need to understand is that 4chan's pervasive culture of racism, homophobia and perhaps most of all misogyny is not ironic and cannot merely be excused as "trolling" because it is not benign. 4chan does not exist in an apolitical vacuum and although most of its posters are not actively engaged in terrorizing women on the internet (although some of them are), its culture encourages people to enthusiastically encourage such behavior without concern for the ramifications of doing so.

Honestly, saying you can put up with the shit people post on 4chan is like saying you can put up with the shit people post on Stormfront. You can't ignore the fact that terrible attitudes permeate in nearly every post on nearly every board.

Not all boards are /pol/ish. Most smaller single interest boards laugh at the Neo-Nazis, and /mu/ is generally really progressive and tolerant of anybody who can articulate their tastes well.
/mu/ is less overtly racist because it's difficult to post about racism and still have some tangible connection to music but it's still there and it's not hard to find. Besides, /mu/ concerns itself with such an incredibly narrow percentage of modern music that you're better off posting elsewhere if you have a significant interest in anything but /mu/core.

do you really care what a bunch of anonymous people laugh at you on the internet?
even when you are anonymous too?

Maybe I worded that wrong.

Its more like you can't even say that you like any game that they don't like, you have to stay by their strict guidelines of what to like and not to like.

The same can be said for other boards like /mu/ and such
If more of us lived according to 4chan, world peace and human understanding would happen overnight.
Or everyone would die.

Just depends on the thread.

I think 4chan is a generally awful place.

I have to disagree. Race is often really relevant to music (as much as it is to TV), and I've heard a lot of posters say in full sincerity that they believe Black people are usually better musicians than white people.

And /mu/ may have only encouraged /mu/core in 2011, but these days you'll be mocked pretty mercilessly if your most-played artists are dominated by Sufjan Stevens, NMH, or Death Grips. "/mu/ drone" is probably a more biting insult than pleb, right now.
