Dark Souls GFWL to Steamworks Migration is now live.

Now I have to unplug my x360 controller and plug it in afterwards to play or else the game freezes at startup. Anyone knows what can be happening?

Changing your download region changes your matchmaking too, in theory if we all set the same region whe should have a decent population for pvp.

Ok, let's all change to:

Because the Europeans don't want to change to America and America don't want to change to Europeans!

Had the game uninstalled, but I reinstalled it and now it's telling me I'm not signed in so I can't save (after having to run it in W7 compatibility mode so it wouldn't crash right after launch, I'm using W8.1). I select "LIVE" from the main menu and it makes the sound of selecting something but nothing happens. Not sure what my options are. Verifying the cache doesn't catch anything.

I can opt into the beta and run it fine but of course there are no saves to import because it's not letting me log into LIVE without the beta...

Any suggestions?

EDIT: Just had to completely uninstall and reinstall GFWL separately and it works now.

So it's crashing when I launch not even launching after the update. I uninstalled, removed dsfix, tried opting into the beta. and nothing. I'm checking my task manager and seeing a DATA.exe and DARKSOULS.exe go up.

Anyone else with no luck?

I have a quick, barely related question, if anyone can test for me:
how much "messing around" is required in this very moment to download and play the Steamworks version for someone who is completely new to the game?
I'm asking since I gifted a copy of the game to my brother in October and I advised him to wait before playing the game.
I need to know if suggesting to him "You can download and play it now" would require 40 minutes of telephone helpline.

You just right click and select properties on the entry in your game list, select the beta tab, then pick the beta build in the dropdown. Then when you hit install, you get The Goods.

where's a good beginner's/starter guide? wanna' choose a decent class for my first play through.

Go with Pyromancer and Master key
or Thief with Black Fire Bomb (since Thief has already Master Key) and the fire bombs are for killing Asylum Demon early for his weapon.

All other starting gifts are pretty dumb. Seriously.

DON'T USE GUIDES! Use the community if needed.

I recommend

Warrior - good stats, decent armor, best starting shield (resists fire), rolling speed: mid, starts with longsword which can be upgraded and used the whole game, good all around with weapons, can dodge or block when needed

Wanderer - fast, agile, better gear than Thief, armor set can be upgraded and is good til end of game, obtain falchion sword later for my personal build, best for dodging and rolling from attacks

Bandit - highest starting strength with battle-axe, very powerful at low level, puts you on path for Strength build

Many people recommend Pyromancer for beginners, but I think it's better to learn to play without the "crutch" of spells when you start out.

Any character can learn spells and use them if the stat requirements are met.

My favored build is Wanderer, using speed and Dex based weapons, and leveling Faith for utility spells and some attacks.

On your first playthrough, take the pendant for your starting gift. Clutch it tightly and never let it go. It will see you through.

I'll only offer three pieces of advice to new players:
  • Get a bit into the game before you decide whether or not you want to start using guides.
  • Do not take the master key as a starting gift
  • Don't give up

Or, if you're getting frustrated, do the opposite of what this guy says. Unless you're really patient or observant, you'll miss a lot of aspects of Dark Souls on your first (or even second) playthrough, not to mention you might end up leveling up your character in a way that makes late game a major pain.

Don't be afraid to start as Pyromancer. You'll get magic that's perfectly balanced for beginners: it's incredibly strong in the beginning when you need help but falls off around halfway through the game.

Don't be afraid to get a Drake Sword, either. Google it.

Don't be afraid to use a guide if you get lost or feel like you're equipment sucks, because you might have missed something.

Dark Souls early game is WAY easier than it used to be, you get plenty of Souls, Humanity, and Homeward Bones, and the aggro is toned down too. It's not that hard, just be patient and pay attention to everything you pick up, and what NPC's say to you.

Ask the community thread or like others have said, just start a new one.

Ok, let's see:

Bionculars - Is on the graveyard very near at the beginning of the game (starting gift wasted)
10x Black Fire Bomb - need 5 for Asylum Demon first encounter kill, 5 for whatever else
Divine Blessing - 1 use only, mostly same as Humanity (starting gift wasted)
Master Key - Opens doors (not all but doors where you need certain keys)
Old Witch Ring - Only use to have Dialog with a sexy spider woman but still available through snugly (starting gift wasted)
Pendant - useless, also available through snugly (starting gift wasted)
Tiny Being's Ring - grants 5% of your maximum HP, if not Master Key or Fire Bomb, use this
Twin Humanities - 2x Humanities, you can get more than enough humanities they aren't that rare as the game claims. (starting gift wasted)

I know why you don't recommend the Master Key, but that's actually stupid (not being offense), because when new player use the key for example to go to the drake valley, they get crushed easily and they take this game more serious and keep their defenses up all time, probably.

So I booted up the game, logged into GFWL, then exited DS. My Steam Achievements were populated with the achievements for DS I earned when using GFWL... But the next step of the process - going into Properties > Beta tab > enabling for dsptde-2.0 - isn't there. I access the Beta tab, but can't pick a Beta from the drop-down. Help me GAF :(

I don't think it works if you're still in the game. Exiting the game takes a bit of time because GFWL sucks. If that's not your issue, try restarting Steam.

Uninstall and download & install again, that's the option if you don't care about your save games and you like to play from fresh.

Also if you do this, unistall GFWL first, if you want to get rid of it, once and for all

List of possible fixes:

Upgrade DSFix to 2.3
Check Game Integrity in Steam
Praise the Sun countless times until it works

The joys of regionlocked connections. There's tons of backlash so it'll get fixed soon I believe.

Yeah, this did it, thanks.

Foundd the first summon sign in 2 hours aaaaaaaaaand

DARK SOULS PREPARE TO DIE EDITION executable has stopped working.

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Everyone change your Download region to Finland.
the devs/FROM left the default distance filtering on, easy mistake. So people are getting around it by using Finland

From a Twitch chat, apparently it's making connections work much better.

Why will poise get you killed? Due to ignoring other stats in order to raise it?

Poise makes it so you don't flinch or get knocked away from attacks so it's easier to continue attacking with say, a large slow greatsword. It also makes it easier for enemies to land multi-hit attacks as well though. It's been a while but I believe getting knocked down has invulnerability frames as well.

so i'm pretty stupid and probably missed or misred the answers already but some questions about the whole thing:

* is durantefix 100% working? cos i tried walking around in 60 fps and got stuck in a bonfire after reverse hollowing...
* do texture mods still work? i need my "YOU DEFEATED" mod
* is online play gonna be changed whatsoever? while i be able to help people and be invaded and have multiplayer fun the way i do in dark souls 2?
* no vac bans for durantefix i hope

Getting stuck at bonfires is just a part of the 60 fps experience. It introduces bugs like that when enabled. Try not to perform an action too quickly after using a bonfire, as I find that it seems to make it happen more often. I'm also pretty sure texture mods still work, but I haven't tried re-installing mine yet.
