What's the absolute worst game of 2014 you played?

Tenkai Knights: Brave Battle

It's like a Smash Bros. game in ways. You're put into a random environment made up of platforms (really boring designs, too) and you have to take out a certain amount of enemies with shit combat.

Once one is downed, instead of having to try for the others on the map, you can just wait for it to respawn and repeat.

There's a ranged character whose attack is so weak it's useless.

Yoshi's New Island...oh god....if Tezuka is really responsible for that game (and he didn't just try to salvage a bland mess) I'm very disappointed in him.

Also found this shocking, my nephew plays like 5 AAA games a year, so it's understandable that his worst would be one of those.

But a dedicated gaming community like GAF? you think anyone willing to devote hours of their lives talking about games on the internet would play more than just the same old handful of heavily marketed titles of the year.

Sure, but if you're a dedicated gamer, then you most likely know what you like, doesn't need to play everything that gets released, and can spot the most interesting games. And then it's no wonder that most dissapointing one will feel like the worst one.

Should people buy more bad games just to have better answers for this thread?

Probably Castlevania:LoS 2. I loved the original and wanted to love this too, but my God what an absolute piece of shit it was. Such potential wasted though mind bogglingly terrible and bizarre game design decisions which resulted in gameplay which was no fun whatsoever.

Of 2014 releases, it's easily Watch_Dogs, and I didn't even hate the game. The PC port issues really killed my enjoyment.

People should play more games and decide for themselves if they think they're bad.

How can you know that a game is bad before you even play it, unless you base your purchasing decisions solely on reviews?

And surprise surprise, some of the best indie games don't get many reviews, therefore don't get played.

My point was, you would think a gaming community like GAF would have taken more risks and played more titles that aren't massive multi-million dollar extravaganzas.

Anything with that much money and marketing behind it will at least be playable, to get to the real worst games of the year you have to give some of the lesser titles a shot.

They could be bad, and usually are but every now and then you find a real gem. To me, that's what being a real enthusiast is all about.

The Crew was pretty bad, but Sonic Boom was the worst game I've played this year, It's soo bad, it even makes some of the previous Sonic games seem good in comparison.

2014 was the 'Year of the MOBA' for me, here's my rating from 1 (terrible) to 7 (shitawful)

1. Strife
2. League of legends
3. DOTA 2
4. Smite
5. Solstice Arena
6. Vainglory
7. Dawngate

All of these games are terrible because of the idiots I played against. Not once did I experience any good type of sportsmanship, fuck MOBAs.

The absolute worst is Tenkai Knights: Brave Battle
Tenkai_Knights_Brave_Battle_English_3DS_Cover.jpg

Absolute dog-shit fighting mechanics, boring and repetitive level design although it's super short and annoying sudden difficulty spike near the half-way point. As I said in my review "a perfect way of convincing young people not to play video games".

Disregarding complete shovel-ware, it's a tie between Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and GTA V.

SB_Rise_of_Lyric_NA_Box_Art.jpg

While there are some neat ideas in the latter half of the game, the level design is for the most part really boring, collectibles are randomly placed instead of well-thought out, speed only plays a role in semi-automated sequences, the tech is extremely weak. To conclude: Bad concept, bad execution on both ends, design and tech. And this is coming from a huge fan of collectathons and Sonic, but the designers clearly don't understand how to use collectibles as means to structure a level and just pump them into the game without giving it any thought.

Now, I've heard the derogatory description of a walking simulator for many smaller dl games that don't put focus on the gameplay, but on a narrative and their artsy presentation. But the word driving simulator does not have a similar meaning, so I probably need to call GTA 5 something like a "walking simulator in a car". About half the play time in GTA 5 is spent driving cars without any challenge, just following the GPS. This absolutely not only includes going to a mission, but even during missions you're following GPS lines so much that I just have to think it's some kind of obsession. The main gameplay other than this splits in two big parts: Driving challenges (follow someone closely or get away from police) that play like a weak open world arcade-racer and suffers from over-sensibility of controls when at medium or high speed, as well as cover shooter sequences that are really boring in design. There are some nicer missions in-between, like in particular the heists, but more than three quarters of the game are just sub-par. Speaking of par: The golf minigame was surprisingly well-executed, however, ROckstar has focused on giving the players a huge amount of things to do in the world, but could seemingly not commit to some gameplay type that should be perfectly polished. The game focusses on a believable (not realistic, but that's not a problem for me) world so much that it forgets to deliver finely-tuned gameplay. This game really was a chore for me and personlly, I'd rather play Sonic 2006 again than this. This game really was a chore for me and personlly, I'd rather play Sonic 2006 again than this - though I can of course see that GTA 5 is a really impressive piece of work and all-around way more polished than the enormous turd that is Sonic 2006, but Sonic 2006 at least always focusses on gameplay and challenging sequences, however bad they may be, in contrast to GTA 5 which seems to focud on believability over everything. Ah and by the way, Franklin is insufferable.

Great battle system (still, the game encourages you to avoid battle and fight bosses only, as the rewards are basically shit for mobs). Everything else was shit.

I loved XIII-2, but this shit right there.... Nah.

I didn't play anything awful, really.

CoD: AW was bad, but I just hate CoD. Not sure why I bought it.

Stick It To the Man was really, really ugly.

Experience, the ability to spot patterns in games, and the ability to read. I don't need to play Watch Dogs to know it's not a game that interests in me, and would hold my interest for that long.

I think we all are doing that. Most of us at least. But as with other medias, you tend to judge quality on the basis on expectations and

Maybe I missed a post from earlier, but what are examples of those games?

I have played games like Valiant Hearts, Monument Valley, The Wolf Among Us, Defence Grid 2, Wasteland 2, Massive Chalice, Broken Sword 5 and more this year, and they have all been at least good.

I rented Rambo during the next gen lull at the start of the year. Its probably the worst game I've ever played. Just awful in every way

Watch Dogs and Driveclub are runners up due to them both being so bland and boring

Wolfenstein: The New Order.

Didn't know about the AMD troubles and so the game runs like absolute shit on my laptop.

I guess I was better about avoiding bad games this year than previous years, because there wasn't much that I played that was overtly bad (Like MoH:WF a few years ago). Well, except for maybe Murdered: Soul Suspect, which was the one game this year that I let out an "UGH, glad that's over" after beating it. In theory, it was a game that I should have liked. It's an adventure game, a murder mystery, and you're a ghost with ghost powers (Cat Parkour!). Its execution, however, leaves MUCH to be desired. It starts off promising enough, with an apartment building that houses an interesting side mystery and area collectables that tell a spooky story. Then the game hits you with its first really bad idea: stealth sequences. These sequences are both tedious and annoying, and pretty much amount to pointless padding. Then you go out into the hub world and the other areas. They also have side-mysteries and area collectables, but the side-mysteries after the first one are all disappointingly straightforward (no shocking twists and no unsettling aspects) and the "spooky" stories that come from the other areas' collectables are long-winded (too much setup for very little pay-off). You'd think the main plot would make up for it, but it's too bland and predictable, despite the seemingly interesting premise.

It's too bad, because it does have some neat ideas (in theory). It just didn't execute them very well.

Hmm. I must be weird because i think that rambo game looks badass. Op said you cant use a lightgun but i read it was compatible with the move. Is that not the case?

I just bought a sharpshooter a couple weeks ago so I've been buying all the light gun games i can find. This will be my next purchase if it works with move. I can see how it would be crap with just the regular controller.

Z-Run for Vita. Got it for free, it became my guilty pleasure for 2-3 days (hey, most trophies were easy!) until I finally told myself "are you stupid?", dropped it and deleted from my memory card.

Is that mediocre or plainly bad?

It's a game I may be interested to get if I ever see it for cheap in a bargain / second hand bin. For what I've read in your post it just looks like a mediocre game.

I somehow avoided shitty games, so Watch Dogs. Needed something to hold me over until da gawd returned and I'm still disappointed by it. It's the epitome of average at best.

Candy Crush Soda. a lot of you have probably tried it. it's a dumb mobile game. just dreadful.

Great game until, like candy crush, you get to those levels that are 100% luck/chance.

Dragon Age for me. It started off so well but I'm at the last boss and am hating every minute of it. The repetitive collectathon and fetch quests plus the baffling UI/menu/inventory management systems really kill it for me.

Best game of the year for me was transistor.

I don't understand how anyone could have possibly said Dragon Age and meant it. Not your cup' o tea -- sure, but worst game you played in 2014? That's rough. The game is great on production value and quality of polish/depth alone.

Hmmm. Of all the games I played, it was Trine 2 that was absolutely unplayable. Sluggish physics, irresponsive controls and a fantastisic art direction.

From the games released in 2014, Ace Attorney; Duel Destinies was the crappiest. A series known for its humour and its courtroom puzzles became an eBook simulator. Please do not try to solve this puzzle, I'll solve it for you, the game always said. Furthermore, more and more Japanese folklore is inserted after every game. However, because the game NEEDS to be based in Los Angeles, this is professionally torn apart.
What is left is the hollow shell of what once was a great series. I want to double-dip on the trilogy, however with AA5 Capcom already got too much of my money. Summarised:

Shadow of Mordor. The only thing going for it is the Nemesis system, it's an otherwise very bland and uninteresting game in my opinion. If it went a full out proper RPG with that Nemesis system I could envision great things.

Shadow of Mordor. I have only played a few hours but it feels completely uninspired. Bland combat and uninspired world being the worst offenders to me. Having an open world that doesn't stimulate me to explore it eliminates every potential advantage of being an open world game right from the start. Maybe it gets better further along, and it's not a terrible game. It's just as I'm being more judicious buying games lately, it's the one that just stood out from what I bought this year.

Sonic Boom, absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt. Nothing about that game besides the reaction to it's shit-tier-ness was entertaining.

Well I played the Order 1886 at an event... Huehuehue

But seriously, I didn't play any absolute stinkers this year. Maybe I had the least fun with some of the filler ps+ games. What was that one where it was part game part personality test? I really wanted to like it but it just felt like a boring version of scribblenauts where you couldn't really do anything

Polish? No way. Depth or just 100hours of fetch quests tacked on to the story?

I'm thinking of the major games I played this year.: titanfall, transistor, forza 2,halo,Diablo 3,dark souls 2,sunset overdrive, d4...i think dragon Age was less enjoyable than those.

Fair enough, I felt like the quest design was at least well written and diverse enough where I didn't feel I was doing the same thing too often. Also, the art style was good and the main story drew me in, as did the relationship mechanics, war table, crafting, classes/abilities, and strategic combat.

But is is a matter of opinion, and all the other games you played were excellent titles. With that, I would personally put it above Diablo 3. But to each his own!
