Legend of Korra Book 4: Balance |OT| A Feast of Crows

Korra had some great moments and portions of story arcs, and even a really good season (3), but ultimately it left me unsatisfied, while ATLA's story arc and conclusion sits so well with me.

Also, poor Mako. :( :(

i don't either. but i usually feel like i watched a different show than most folks in this thread.

Well given that Mako cheated on Asami and Korra betrayed her friend (Asami), it would be reasonable to expect Asami to feel angry, and for their to be some fall out from that. But there wasn't.

Most of Book 2, Korra was off on her own. Bolin and Mako had split ways over their careers. In Book 3 the team got back together, but again, Korra ended up being off on her own for most of it.

Korra then fucks off for 3 years by herself. Doesn't bother to contact Bolin or Mako. Only Asami. She comes back, and she barely sees Mako and Bolin.

So you tell me. Why would they be friends? Why are they a team? Looking at their overall friendship and time as a team, they barely spent any time together. And there is a lot of personal issues that should have impacted their time together.

Asami pretty much spent zero time with Mako and Bolin in Book 4. And by the very end, Asami is with Korra off on their own. We never see the group together reflecting on the journey they were on together.

Legit, they spent barely any time together. So I don't see why you think they should be friends or a team. The plot didn't support it.

lol that blog name.

Also, thanks for posting pics and stuff, I know this is a discussion forum but you are right. People need to lighten up

to actually add some kind of thing to the korrasami evidence thing, Korra entrusts Asami to guard her body in the Spirit World, meaning she's the one she trusts the most even by Season 3. that was a neat hint

Porn channel in prison, hmm...

Zaheer has a great life tbh. He can just roam free in the Spirit world and do what he wants.

to actually add some kind of thing to the korrasami evidence thing, Korra entrusts Asami to guard her body in the Spirit World, meaning she's the one she trusts the most even by Season 3. that was a neat hint

And yet, they only barely became friends at the beginning of Book 3. Odd.

Don't cry for Mako, he has literally saved the world 4 times. I'm sure he can land some nice ladies pretty easily.

Mako should have just joined Bolin and backed Kuvira. Fuuuck it. They weren't going to get anything anyways. Should have reserved their spots next to the Queen in the new world order. They fucked up.
"That ho Korra almost broke us up breh. We should join Kuvira to bring balance to this world. All aboard the FREEDOM TRAIN!! Choo choo!!!!

The thing with AtLA is that team Avatar did everything together. Team Korra were at one time actively toxic toward one another and chemistry destroying. Seriously, go rewatch season 2 (or don't). Korra acting like an uneven dick. Bolin acting like a new money asshole. Asami acting like an idiot. Mako just clumsily bumping around from character to character not really jelling with any one. It's poorly written and ugly to watch. Mako's side story is the most compelling thing going aside from Beginnings, and even that is poorly handled. Why in the hell was that nuktuk shit so drawn out? Something that gimmicky would've been an episode at most in AtLA, but it gets an entire season in Korra.

And the romance portion is somehow even worse than in book 1. Just...fuck.

Now we are feeling bad for Mako?
oh, he had a pointless sacrifice, im not sure if he really needed to take the heart out.

Well yeah. Think about it. The guy each season became less and less of a douche (he gets the most points awards for improvement). The guy is a total bro. He 100% puts in work, and is always putting his life on the line.

And in the end, Bryke give a big fuck you to him. Denies him of any conclusion or resolution. Denies him and Bolin of any kind of reflection with the protagonist that they continually put their life on the line for....so she could go off on a vacation with her new gf.

yeah, I do feel bad for Mako. legit. He got cut out of the ending, and by the end the writers basically declared that no one really mattered. The team didn't matter. All that mattered was Korra and her getting her P wet. Yeah. Poor dude.

By the way, the greatest moment in Avatar history for me was when Zuko redirected lightening back at his father. Partly because of the relational dynamic, and also because of how the technique itself was shown briefly a couple of times, then taught to Zuko, and then enough time passes that you forget about it (plus Zuko never mastered it) so that it's such a nice surprise when it happens, and then you remember Iroh's words to Zuko about how he'll never be able to do it until he's at peace with himself, which makes the moment even more meaningful. Excellent excellent excellent.

So threads get locked at 400? Fuck. Are we even going to bother with an OT 2? I don't think we are ready for the AvatarGAF thread. Hmmm.

Fuck.

Nah, it's no friendzoning. They both know they're better off as friends and allies. Severing all that baggage from before.

It's not being friend zoned. But it's kind of worse. This guy is pledging loyalty to someone that doesn't' give a shit about him. Who couldn't be bothered to contact him for years. Who didn't even spend any time with him after the dude risked his life for her over and over. And then gets cut off at the end.

Bro don't worry I'm on it.

lol I won't post in the thread if you make it.

The only resolution he could have was to be back with Korra, there is not much else for him.

Unless, what about some kind of recognition or medal from Raiko and Lin?

Weird to see everyone thinking they did Mako dirty. I thought he had a great, heroic ending and proved himself a loyal friend. That's what the show's all about, right?

And for real, I'm still in mild disbelief at the ending. Like, they really did that? Damn.

More like a rejection of the shit tier writing from Bryke.

That's on him, though. He's the fool.

Next thing you know he'll make a thread in the OT about a girl he has mixed feelings for and needs GAF's advice.[/QUOTE]

I'm sorry it has to be this way.

She didn't even give enough of a shit about the guy to introduce him to another woman.

Everyone hated Mako because of how Bryke handled the love relationships at his expence, and now reading the last couple pages I agree that he got Bryked, of course it's not even comparable with the character that got bryked in ATLA (Azula), but yeah poor Mako, maybe if there are comics they could pair him up with a rookie metalbender cop or something.

And about Team Avatar being friends, I can only see Korra and Asami because of the scenes they had together in the last 2 seasons (now they are more than that), and Korra and Mako, they were together more time compared with the other members and they dated for six months between season 1 and 2.

People take issue with the fact that, Mako and Bolin really didn't get a proper send off. Yes, Makos heroic scene was epic and a highlight of the show. And yes, him being loyal friend was great. But again, Korra was a terrible friend. She didn't talk to him for 3 years. Came back and never spent any time with him. So Mako pledging loyalty to someone that really shouldn't even be his friend...is well pathetic.

Honestly, just look at the overall context of the show. How their relationship played out (how they didn't make sense). And how by Book 4, Asami spent zero time with Bolin. Spent barely any time with Mako. And the end itself, everyone is off on their own.

Yeah...the whole friendship/team thing, was pretty much non-existent by the end. And Bryke decided to cut out Mako and Bolin (who did all the work) of having that reflection moment with the protag on the journey they had been on together.

Instead they opted out for Korra and her new GF (which wasn't a pivotal arc in the story and was clumsily started in Book 3 and kept in the background).

To be fair, some of us were praising Mako in Book 3. I still think the guy was bland personality wise. And the writers really didn't know what to do with the side characters. But the guy had changed a lot in a good way. And was always putting in work.

I even made a post about him with some gifs:

This post-hoc deifying of Mako is

Nah bro, he made a couple mistakes with the ladies but some of that is just inherent with teenage romance. Other than that he's been a loyal friend to the end. He's the most improved and he gets Bryked the most haha.

Varrick and Zhu Li standing there like wtf is he smiling about.

That's the second time today this lost bet avatar has been quoted. oh lord

I can see what you guys are saying though. Mako fiercely pledges his loyalty to someone who then promptly elopes with her lover on vacation without a single acknowledgement of him. He really does look like a sucker.

It's like Charlie Murphy pledging loyalty to Rick James.

I mean, it's just the writers in general decided to cut out the team from any kind of reflective ending. ATLA ends with them all hanging out at Iroh's place. They are all having a good time. They are all relieved and finally enjoying each others company after all the bullshit they went through together.

They are catching their breath. The audience gets to say goodbye. We get one last glance at the relationships they've built over this entire story.

Korra didn't have this. And granted, I've always argued the relationships on this show were terrible. That the friendships/ the team never made any sense (especially when you consider, most of Book 2-4 they barely spent any time together).

But still, to just cut out Bolin and Mako from any kind of reflective ending with the hero of the story? Like wow. Talk about fucked. And to give the entire ending away to a side story that barely was started in Book 3 (and was in the background)?

Korra and Asami did not deserve that ending. Mako and Bolin did. And not only does this deny the characters of that ending, it also tells the audience that hey, the "team", didn't really matter in the end. You don't get any resolution for them. Now bugger off. We got KORRASAMI!

I guess it depends on what you wanted out of the show and the character relationships. To me they are friends from the shared experience of saving the world and having each others backs. I don't think any friend circle is perfect where everyone is super tight with each other and that's how I always saw this Korra and co. She's the glue that pulls them all together.

Also, this one is more my personal taste but I liked that they didn't do a big group reflection at the end. I took the ending to be just an end to this journey and that they're will be more in the future for them.

The only way I really think they dropped the ball on Mako is by not giving him a goal or something to tie him to the plot other than him still hitching his hopes on Korra at the end. He was just there after season 1 and being a package deal with Bolin was the only thing that kept him relevant. Even Bolin was focused on learning an extension of earth bending, improving his skills/leadership and he was involved in all the Kuvira stuff.

Don't cry for Mako, he has literally saved the world 4 times. I'm sure he can land some nice ladies pretty easily.

I don't know, dude just seems like bad dating material.

Had two of arguably the hottest females on the show and lost both of them. Now they are dating each other doing who knows what on "vacation" after all those years of pent up tension.

It's not the best rep for him.

They only had so much time. Mako and Bolin have had strong friendships established with Korra since season 1. Nothing has indicated they've faded at all, as they've all been loyal to eachother throughout the series. We don't need constant reaffirmation because that's what loyalty is. We know their friendship is strong because they continue to fight for eachother and lay their lives on their line to protect eachother. I mean, every character could always use more development, but considering the time crunch Bryke was working under, I am very satisfied with everyone's sendoff.
