Destiny Nearing 13 Million Players, 500+ People Working on the Game Right Now

Havent we already covered this on here?

The gameplay is solid enough to keep people playing it casually and mindelessly

At least enough for people not to care.

Not to mention its Co-operative nature and ease. Also if you aren't marathoning through the game there is enough to do and then you have PVP

I mean I stopped playing awhile ago but I get it

Destiny is just a GAF whipping boy, people hate on it because everyone else is doing it. They just pile on as a means to compensate for not understanding what they were getting into before buying.

Yup. Modern Warfare was amazing and did almost everything right. Both the single and multiplayer were fantastic and iterated or dramatically improved upon almost every feature.
Probably didn't even cost 1/4th of what Destiny cost, either.

You keep telling yourself that.

its not even the gameplay that's keeping people playing its the RNG gamble. The diehard Destiny players rerolled several characters and will play the same strikes, missions and raids over not because they are extremely fun but because they are rolling the dice on getting loot or materials to upgrade loot. I sometimes check streams of people playing the game and the streamers always look zombiefied, bored and tired but the gamble grind has them hooked. They done all the missions so many times over again they can anticipate the fights and run right threw them.

And yesterday I traded it in for a Pit amiibo.

I hadn't played it since early October. I have no drive to play it whatsoever. It seems like such a polarizing game. The people who love it REALLY love it and play every day.

And then people like me think it's boring.

Or maybe they like playing the game. It might be a foreign concept to imagine someone could enjoy something you don't, but try to use your imagination to conceptualize it.

Haters would rather actively convince players that something is inherently wrong with them for enjoying the game.

Does that mean 13 million copies sold too? The PR wording confuses me and I've learned never to take them at face value. They tend to spin stuff.

No, they say that this is only total amount of players that tried the game after the release of free demo on all consoles. This is clearly said in that gamespot article.

Doesn't surprise me at all. After the alpha I was pretty certain this was going to be Activision's next WoW, and the beta numbers released clinched it, in my mind.

I don't see how you could make that statement with such a straight face. The juggernaut of WoW was due to it collecting ~$15 a month, every month, from it's millions of players.

This PR release has no actual sales numbers attached, and it's a one time sale with the possibility of people who paid for the expansion.

The more apt comparison, in both size and gameplay, would be the next Diablo.

Which it still isn't.

What people dont seem to get is how much more attractive this game is for casual players than it is for hardcore

And hardcore players will continue to get screwed (especially with early adopter premiums) while those who discover it over time will be picking up Destiny GOTY editions and getting all the content for 40 bucks

They packaged up a basic version of the game they wanted to make so that they would have a game to release this year.

Those 500 people are continuing to work on the real destiny for 2016.

lol do you really believe this shit

Sometimes I wonder if Destiny would've been better if they actually made it an actual MMO on the PC instead of the grindy console game they turned it into.

I do hope the 500+ people working on Destiny 2 now manage to turn things around for the sequel, because the idea behind Destiny is exactly the type of game I want in my life right now. Borderlands 2 left a deep crater in my loot driven shooter gaming soul and I'm positive a good Destiny can fill that gap up.

I still think Destiny's success is attributed by there being no competition. The game is just too average for me to take seriously.

Or, heaven forbid, some of those people are actually having fun.

I have two buddies who now live in different parts of the country. Destiny gives us a fun co-op experience whenever we're in the mood for one, not unlike Diablo or Left4Dead. It also has a strong single player and multiplayer, so were not stuck doing just one thing. I can honestly say Ive never done anything expecting loot of any kind.

Frankly it is insulting reading that I must be "addicted" and am not actually having fun or enjoying getting better like a DOTA player or whatever. I like the mechanics, I like the teamwork, and I like the games universe.

I want to know how many are actually actively playing the game and not just the total number of people who played it.

This was the beginning of the end for me

There I am at the top.

My buddy who had a .44 k/d that round? He got a legendary. Me? I got nothing.

Don't shit in my mouth and call it loot, Bungie. I know what I'm really eating.

"Players", I'm sure I'm counted on there a couple of times despite only playing the beta and then on a separate account with my friends PS4. Need some less PR focused numbers than that.

I really don't understand the gaf hate after I put about 20 hours into it. Played through the story, played some multiplayer, leveled to 20, and finished the game. Sure I could grind for better gear post level 20, but grinding is dumb. I don't have OCD so I don't get mad at the game for dropping bad gear, which most of the hate seems to stem from.

In that case..... Don't ever play Diablo 3, beat the story and then come on here and say 'I beat the game'

That's the whole point, there is no beating mmo's, you just keep going

I've learned in this this thread it's because playing Destiny is just like being taken hostage. Or smoking crack cocaine.
I suppose it's only a matter of time before someone discovers Hitler was playing Destiny...
There is literally a thread about destiny helping a guys sheep schedule because he wakes up at 9 to play dailies and it drains him to much to okay other games. Shit is disgusting addiction design garbage made to prey on a very specific type of person

I wouldn't call that 'finishing' the game. Does that mean you never bothered with the Raid?

I liken it to an abusive relationship. You keep giving it chances and it keeps beating you in the face while occasionally giving you diamond earrings to say it's sorry.

More than 500 people working on this IP yet not one person could see the piss poor design choices made in this game? I never say this but I hope the sequel bombs.

I read that topic and cringed and kept it moving, alot of mmos have those effects on people though.

All that potential and they put it at risk by half assign content.

Imagine if they actually delivered on the hype how populous this game would be by now, and many people wouldn't be burned out for the sequel.

Usually I can understand where resources went, but honestly what was everyone doing prior to Destiny 1 releasing?

Did they throw out a ton of content early on or only hire up really late in the process?

You know.. They need a lot of janitors for all the Bullshit they were pushing.

Damn, that's a lot of people, especially since (I suppose) they don't have a game launching anytime soon.

Edit - then again, it seems they're using an in-house engine? That can consume a lot of manpower in development and support.

I'm glad many people are finding value in grinding through this game... but when a demonstrably average title devoid of inspiration and content is this successful, I don't think it's healthy for AAA gaming in the long run.

Marketing and branding trumps everything, I guess.

Destiny is hardly the straw that broken the camel's back when it comes to triple a titles

If they delivered on the hype and actually gave us what they advertised the game to be, it would have been a gigantic success. With an engrossing story, varied missions, multiple planets and lots of locations, spectacular community events, and a persistent online world where everyone is connected and you can team up with randoms and friends alike to quest in the amazing worlds they created. I was expecting this game to literally push all my other gaming aside and grab hold of me for months.

What we got was NOWHERE near that. If they even came remotely close, the game would be the most played game out there I bet.

As this point, does anyone really expect more to the sequel than more "press square (x) to deply ghost" missions over and over on "new" planets/worlds?

Whoa you actually stopped? The guy who championed it in every OT before the game came out?

That's a damn shame, it's still enjoyable for what it is

Championed it? I defended it before the OT was out, plenty of others did as well. I had a blind trust in Bungie and honestly people were jumping to conclusions before the final product was out. But then the game came out and admittedly it was a total grind fest. I stopped playing within the month.

Haven't played the final game but from what I've seen its boring, repetitive and way too grindy and 'random'.

500 people just means more problems.

The shooting gameplay is the best but the game grind and story are terrible
I stay for the shootbang.
