My first time watching Cowboy Bebop

Burning question: why did you buy it in the first place without being sure that you wanted to watch it? Do you buy things from amazon and then flip them for profit?

Never really liked the episodes that included
Vicious
or the last episode itself but other than that it's great.

Y'know, I've been rewatching the series now the blu ray is out and I actually think Ballad of Fallen Angels is a low point. It's not bad by any means, but it lacks the heart most great Bebop episodes have. It feels like a bunch of film noir and John Woo film tropes strung together. Some of the lines are truly dire, especially in the Vicious fight at the end.

It has some of the most striking visuals in the series and some great music, though, so it's at least better than Boogie Woogie Feng Shui. That and My Funny Valentine are the biggest clunkers in the series.

My personal first episode and one that really got me into the series was Jupiter Jazz 1. Fucking amazing episode.

I started watching it about two years ago. Got up to the
mushroom
episode then I stopped. I didn't like it all that much. I was bummed out because I heard great things. It just didn't hold up for me. Very influential, no doubt but very dated. The music was great. But I wasn't drawn in by the characters.

Still the greatest anime series of all time. Not one bad, forgettable, totally skippable episode (closest you get to that is Woogie Boogie Fung Shwei). Everything was done expertly even the dub.

First and only time I got teary-eyed at an ending for any TV show.

Most overrated anime ever.

Bang.

the dub is fucking amazing too. the ending of jupiter jazz part 2 is fantastic from every aspect. every actor does what they're supposed to do perfectly. great show. doubt it will ever be topped as far as i'm concerned.

Shinichiro Watanabe knocked it out of the fucking park with this.

There are anime fans who will say it's overrated but I don't see how it possibly could be when it carries itself so well, when it plays with genre and pop media so effortlessly.

Take an episode like Toys in the Attic. [Toys in the Attic Spoilers to Follow]

It's sort of a fun, weird episode, but through the episode we learn about each of the characters' life philosophy as well as carrying through one of the major themes of the show. Clean out the fridge. Or phrased another way, let go of the past.

The imagery and the narrative speak for themselves in this episode

Consider that it is Ed, the character who most exists in the present, who 'defeats' the monster.

Consider that the final climactic struggle of the episode is to eject the fridge from The Bebop. A fridge that literally contains elements from the past that have been growing twisted, and festering away in a very real and physical sense.

Look at how the occupants of the bebop were depicted, Faye and Jet becoming weightless as though their burdens were lifted as Spike disabled gravity to push the fridge out of The Bebop, and after it's gone, they float freely.

And the whole time it's riffing off of Alien.

Nothing is thrown away in Cowboy Bebop. There is such a level of care and attention to crafting every scene. And they work together as part of a whole which expresses itself with a unique character.

One of the best things I have ever watched. It is stylish, fun and cerebral. Id love to be able to watch it fresh. And the music!

I need to watch the whole series. I saw a few episodes between a friend's VHS and catching an episode on Adult Swim, but my whole experience with the show comes down to:

Jamming with Edward
Ganymede Elegy
Toys in the Attic
Mushroom Samba

Seen it a thousand times and it really never gets old. Its very episodic so you can enjoy specific episodes any time largely without getting lost or confused.

I don't watch anime regularly/generally have no interest in it, but this used to come on at like 2AM when I was in high school (lol) and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

really have to rewatch it.

have the old german DVDs, that were already out of print, when I tried to buy them.
lets just say, that one DVD with 4 episodes cost me more than the whole show on blu ray today..

Bebop is one of the better anime released because it is both grounded and sci-fi with its look at the future of humanity. The one-off episodes are engaging and still add character depth, culminating in some very solid character arcs. I'm glad I picked up the Blu-ray when I had the shot.

My first time though (I'm a bit jealous OP) was when it first aired on Adult Swim over a decade ago. Fell in love then and still love it now.

I'm only on Episode 3 too,i started and liked it but i had a lot of problems with school so i had to stop. Of the 3 animes i'm seeing atm, Hunter x Hunter,Gurren Lagann and CB,it looks like the one with most potential.

Nothing is thrown away in Cowboy Bebop.

Bull
Fucking
Shit

Pretty much 90% of the show is fluff, with no relevance what so ever to the "main plot" (and I use that term loosely) of Spike vs Vicious.

Is the show pretty? Hell yes.
Is the show well voiced? Dubs and Subs.
Is the show well directed? Of course, it's Watanabe.
Does the music work? Anyone arguing 'no' has an uphill fight.

Is the show coherent? Meh, not really.
Is the show well written? If you like episodic series then yes.

Is the show over rated? Abso-fucking-lutely.

Samurai Champloo is pretty much superior to Cowboy Bebop in every way except one.

Ein > Momo

Man it's bizzare to bash Bebop for being episodic and then champion Champloo. The zombie episode? The baseball one? The weird second episode that feels tonally completely different from the rest of the series? In any case this is OT. If you want to start a champloo vs bebop thread I'll go there.

Just so you know, the movie takes place between eps 22/23 but you might want to watch it after the series as part of the withdrawal symptoms.

Also, dat space lion

The show is more about self discovery and the connection between the past and the present (among many other existential themes) than a single villain. The beauty of the show is that it combines them both though.

This doesn't mean that much coming from me since I'm not really an Anime guy, but Cowboy Beebop is one of the best tv series I've seen of all time.
I couldn't believe how much I liked it and everyone Ive shown it to since (including girls that claim to hate Anime) have enjoyed it.
The show gets better and better and all of the characters are so loveable. You don't want it to end and when it does...
:(

I remember my first time watching Bebop. Before then I would causally watch some old 90s OAVs. After Bebop, watching anime series became a regular thing for me. It was that incredible.

And yes, episode 5 was when the show went from alright to amazing. Soon as I watched the last episode, I bought the DVD and soundtracks the next day.

I would say to watch the Cowboy Bebop movie just before you start episode 25 (which I think is The Real Folk Blues Part 1).

That's because it's one of those series that you can show to people who aren't fans of the genre and they'll enjoy it.

That's a fair point. If definitely avoids the trappings of most other anime.

As a teenager who didn't like anime I liked evangelion far more as an entry point to the genre. I went into that though expecting all the angst and what not

Seriously, how is Space Dandy? Is it on par with Bebop?

As a long time Bebop/Champloo fan I loved Space Dandy. I'm not sure if it's as memorable but it's certainly a lot of fun, has beautiful art/design/music direction, and a lot of cool episodes/stories.

What it has in common with Bebop and Champloo is its got an overarching story that they touch upon here and there but it's mostly a bunch of self-contained stories about the "journey" of the characters.
