LIZARD SQUAD is Back. Planning XBL Attack. "Biggest attack yet". [UP: XBL/PSN Down]

That is a known bug in the PS4 firmware.

If you are connected to the internet, the PS4 assumes that PSN will be always there for you, thus perpetually trying to sign in and failing, which leads to failure of license verification when you try to launch any game.

If, however, you disconnect the system from the internet, then the PS4 will not try to sign in to PSN at all and rely on the fact that the software belongs to the account which has this system set to primary to authorize launching the game.

Kind of ridiculous that they didn't fix this yet.

i don't think that's the case, since when psn is actually down for maintenance it works fine for me. yet when it's being overloaded due to ddos it hangs and needs to be disconnected from the internet.

What's one day of not gaming. Sounds like they did us a favor for one day.

Look in front of you, those are called people. They may be friends or family, spark up a conversation.

Happy holidays.

i just came back from a family xmas party. i had my fill with family. i want to play some games online.

why not just have your friends do a special door bell ring sequence? that way you know when its a friend or some random asshole.

because then you run into the issues of new people not knowing the sequence and the people ringing the doorbell learning the sequence and thus starting the process over again.

Aha, you forget the part about the million assholes at your front door all trying to ring the doorbell.

Your legitimate friends might actually be in that million, and they're trying to get to the door... but they can't, because there's a million assholes trying to ring the damn doorbell.

By some miracle, one of your friends actually makes it to the doorbell, THEN you let them in. This is why during a DDOS attack, you might get amazingly lucky and actually be able to log in. By pure dumb luck, you managed to initiate a handshake and the server went "oh thank fucking god, someone who isnt an asshole" and lets you in.

But then you do the stupid thing, and realize that you forgot something in your car, so you have to go back outside. And goddamit, the only way back in is through those million assholes. This is also why if you're already logged in, you're could be perfectly fine, but as soon as you do the stupid thing and log out, you're screwed.

Add that to the OP, amazing explanation

Ok, and now I know why Dragon Age didn't work for me until I told my PS4 to stop connecting to the web. They need to stop tying everything to PSN. Even though my internet works, neither system can do much with it because you have to sign in to PSN first.

I've already spent time with my family today.
I would like to enjoy the games I received.
Stop trying to justify it.

And a very Merry Christmas to you.

If these services are this easy to cripple, then I really can't see myself continuing to pay for either of them. I damn sure won't if this continues.

Very good very good.

Jesus Christ, enough with this moralist bullshit.

What I'm worried about right now is if this takes long enough that when I try to contact customer service to get DA:I refunded on PS3 so I can get it on PS4 some dumbass goes "uhh you waited too long sorry." I contacted earlier but because of this nonsense they couldn't even use the tools to refund so I had to contact later. Maybe it'll be clear tomorrow and I'll be good to go, but I would have preferred this resolved sooner than later.

Similarly, it'd be nice to have a day or two extension for the sale as an apology.

Shut up.

No, seriously, you can't assume to know what everyone can do or is ABLE to do this day; maybe there isn't anyone to be with, or they don't celebrate it, or they DO spend time but they don't go the whole day doing whatever and it's more about having a nice meal with family or something... and in the mean time they want to play a game. Nevermind many people get gifts and want to be able to use those gifts. It'd be incredibly lame to get a new Xbox One only to be unable to play it at all due to being unable to update.

Honestly, I'm more annoyed with being unable to sort out a purchase than being unable to play online via PSN or even download it, I can afford to wait on the game but I'd really rather not ultimately waste money on a suboptimal version because some stupid fuckers want to bring down services for their personal amusement or to lash out at corporations in a way that has grotesque collateral damage at best, harms everyone BUT their targets at worst.

Some of those families spent hours of work to buy a console as a gift for xmas to watch them happy using said consoles, lots of them online.

Sadly, there are ways to get this special ring.

If a PS4 had a special packet, encrypted or not, that identified itself as a PS4, all it would take is one person sniffing their network traffic for that packet, decrypting it and you're done.

It's one of those cases where in theory it's a good idea, but then you also have other factors like the servers still having to check that those packets are legit (relatively quick, though), the flood of data coming into the network routers and any number of stops in between.

If you have the one key to the magical door, all the assholes in the street are still going to cause a traffic jam to keep you from the door.

Justify what, it isn't sonys fault or Ms what's went down the past few days, there's not much to defend from these attacks.

So, it would seem according to what you said that for certain server errors, it does fall back to the "is this the primary PS4" check.

I would still consider this a bug, since license verification should always fallback to the offline check, regardless of the reason the connection failed.

Just as "easy" as anything on the internet, probably should stop paying for everything,

But I already pay for my internet anyway and should not have to pay again to middle men in order to use it on these systems to begin with. Of course I do, because I want to game online sometimes. However, if this shit continues, then it sure as shit is not worth it.

Yeah xbl just shit the bed. Can't log in at all for the first time today.
I hear ya there. Funnily enough the Xbox thought it was my router that fucked up when everything else was connected. Thank God Dragon Age was patched and updated yesterday.

The fuck? I've done nothing but dedicate all of my time both yesterday and today to friends and family. All of that being quite enjoyable aside from my nephew's christmas being tainted by these pathetic losers. Now that I am home I'd like to kick back and enjoy my own games and services that I pay for, but some little no-lifers get to strip that from me?

Happy holidays you say? Sure, but now with a big black spot at the end of it that I don't appreciate one bit.

Why did you even buy a system knowing that someone might steal it someday?

I refuse to believe these multi billion corporations cant do more to protect their services somehow. What's to stop them from just doing this continuously for the next 2 weeks ?

I'm looking in front of me. All I see are my dogs. I want to play some online games with my online pals.

I can't play ANY of my games except Dragon Age on PS4.

How can I get passed this?

Wait for the storm to pass, really. It sucks, but even if the attacks have stopped (which some claim they have), it can take hour for services to resume normal operation.

They can. But it costs money, isn't flawless, and there is a risk factor in overspending on protection. I go into it a bit here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=144806383&postcount=2163

Oh. Can't even play Sunset Overdrive offline. It keeps asking me to choose a profile, then it tries signing in but no dice. So I can't even play. Great. Guess I'll play on my PC.

What? I obviously bought them to enjoy. All I am saying is that I am not going to keep paying for these services that we should not even have to pay for to begin with if they keep getting taken down so easily.
