Oculus Rift DK2 Thread

NewRetroArcade is something I've been dreaming of for a long time. Actually anytime I see someone on GAF claim that VR is only good for FPS I would always give an example of an arcade you could play your 2D games in. This is going to blow some minds when I show it to my buddies.

This is a thing?

omg

I have Thief 2 playable using Vireio Perception, but everything looks too big. It's like the opposite problem I had with Alien Isolation where things look small. And I can't see the HUD. Apparently there's a thing called BRASSA built in to Vireio Perceptoin where you can tweak things like IPD (I think that might fix the scaling issue?), FOV, mouse to headtracking, have an unlockable screen where you can zoom out to see HUD elements, etc, but it won't work for me, can't access it with the CTRL + Q command. Anybody know anything about this? edit- BRASSA works fine in other games, just not Dark Engine games. Actually, I can't access VORPX's in-game menu when I'm playing Dark Engine games either, same problem.

Man, if I can get this working correctly, it will quite literally be a dream come true. Thief 1-2 and System Shock 2 in VR, like, holy fuck

Subnautica now supports Oculus Rift

I'm confused why the DK2 still goes for such a premium in the aftermarket when the Oculus site only mentions a 2-4 week order turnaround. Anyone able to provide insight there?

Probably a combination of a few things:

- reports suggesting they are hard to get hold of, desperate bidding when one appears
- misinformation about the headsets only being available for developers
- not checking the price at new, assuming they're really expensive
- impatience to own one ASAP after a trial blew their minds

Plus I imagine there was a bump recently as people tried get one as a Christmas present.

Only 2 to 4 weeks?

I wonder if it's worth it to buy one (sold my DK1 because it made me extremely nauseous). But with a CV possibly coming next year... Hmm.

BlazeRush, so good. So good.

The DK2 support is flawless. It's as close to a "finished" experience as there is. Oculus on, hit play, that's it. Disabled warning (one of the few that I've encountered), and supersampling built-in (even auto-detected a supersampled rez as best). It's perfect.

Very fun game too.

Seems like there might be a new release soon for the Rift version of the Dolphin emulator. Been keeping up with that thread on the OR forums and it sounds like they've made numerous breakthroughs on some stuff. Pretty exciting!

Annnnd it's out:

Merry Christmas!

New Christmas version 4.0-5286:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/101772879/dolphin-vr-x64-4.0.exe

* Much faster single-pass (but geometric mode) stereoscopic 3D.
* Can add extra frames to bring games up to 75Hz.
* Disable culling with action replay codes in Wind Waker, Metroid 1 and 2, and a couple of other games.
* Helmet and all visors working in Metroid 1 and 2 (except perhaps Dark Visor) on DK2.
* Many render-to-texture effects are now 3D.
and many other new features.

Special thanks to Cegli and Feilin and everyone who helped.

All right, I'm in. I had been planning to wait for the consumer version but everyone's been raving about it for Elite:Dangerous.

I've missed out on some big news while ignoring it to avoid further temptation. Strobing OLED? 75Hz? Sweet.

I also put in an order for a STEM so I can try that out as an input device for spaceflight sims. I think there's a lot of potential for an intuitive 6DOF control method there which doesn't take up as much space as a throttle-and-stick setup.

I'm so used to seeing you in the Elite threads I thought I had clicked the wrong thread haha.

Wise decision, Elite is stunning in VR. As long as you have resolution expectations in mind (it's generally fine in Oculus aside from some small text), you won't be disappointed.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter developer will add Oculus Rift support to the game:

That's great news. The game is really well suited for VR. It's absolutely gorgeous, slow paced, interesting puzzles that involve looking around, and some awesome surprising moments that will look amazing in VR.

I"m suddenly having problems with certain games. Retro Arcade and Vox Machinae give me a splitscreen in the rift, as in two images, I see the opening warning message twice. I have no idea what's up, most games work fine as usual. I've tried fiddling with resolutions and direct/extended, windows/full etc. Any ideas?

edit- actually Retro Arcade is also occasionally giving me a crazy 3D image, each one way off. Fuck

could be the latest nvidia drivers-same happens to my elite dangerous in extended mode.

What do you guys think about vorpX? I am thinking about picking up the Rift and wonder about compatibility.

It looks really good from the videos I've seen, nice set of tracking options, zoom, FOV. I feel like I would get everything right with those set of options. BUT does the FOV slider work with majority of the games? It's the little things like that I am not sure about.

Thanks

You got it, downloaded the last driver and it's fixed. You saved my ass, been telling people how great the VR arcade is and I have to show it off tomorrow.

I got Skyrim working incredibly well with it, to the point where it might be my go-to showpiece game. The tweaking options are quite powerful, I got the scale and FOV perfect. Same for Outlast. I think I set both game's FOV to 120 via ini and adjusted the zoom a tad get the FOV correct, and didn't have to touch any of the other FOV options, they were overkill in these situations. I got Bioshock's FOV perfect but I can't seem to get the scale right, but it's still quite impressive. Other than those three games, I haven't spent a ton of time with any others. I'm fairly happy with it, it's no miracle program but it definitely can get some games running good enough to play and very impressive to show people. I couldn't get Skyrim looking right on Vireio.

Sounds good enough, if I can play it with proper FOV and it gets the games a good depth perception, great!

I am looking at the vorpX site, they have a list of supported games. However there is a line that says:

Many more DX9-DX11 titles do work out of the box, just without Stereo 3D.

Does this mean, that other games can be displayed, just without the ACTUAL 3D you buy the Rift for?

This would be kind of a deal breaker

So I got an oculus rift (it literally took 3 days from order to come to the UK) and had all the family have a go for Christmas. From 8 year olds to 64 years old everyone was amazed and all I used was the UE4 Rollercoster. The only issue I really have is screen resolution but this is going to change rapidly though I think 4K will be a consumer minimum.

I was just going to ask the usual question of what's the best demos/games out there at the moment ?

Don't count on it, most likely the CV1 will have a 2560x1440 screen with better pixel fill. We've heard good things about GearVR vs Crescent Bay screens, with both being considered acceptable for consumer, but with Crescent Bay coming out slightly on top.

I haven't been keeping up to date with demos, but some places to check are here and here.

:)

Elite: Dangerous and Alien Isolation are probably the most impressive. Alien's Rift support is touchy as hell, though, and I still haven't gotten it working properly after something knocked my setup out of alignment.

Elite, Alien Isolation and Assetto Corsa in terms of actual games. Euro Truck Simulator too, if you can get it to run smoothly. NoLimits 2 if you want to build and ride lots of beautiful and realistic rollercoasters. Demo's available on Oculus Share: Sightline The Chair, Titans of Space, Vox Machinae, Welcome To Oculus, From Ashes, Windlands and Don't Let Go (headphones are a must). Cyberspace is a fun ride, and Affected is great if you want to scare people. NewRetroArcade is great too.

Bizarrely enough, the Oculus got a run on Australia prime-time TV today, during the lunch time break in the Boxing Day cricket test match. The greatest leg-spinner of all time, Shane Warne, is launching a new website of his own in 2015 that will apparently incorporate a Rift game that will enable to face his bowling, or something.

The 30 second segment didn't do the Rift any favours, or break into details about how it works or anything like that, but just seeing it in the mainstream like that was pretty funny. I also now have to buy a Rift, of course.

Do you know how much computing power you'll need to run at 4k or higher? We're just not there yet. A high frame rate is much more critical at this stage in order to deliver realistic head tracking.

you don't need to render at 4k, you can upscale and still benefit the pro's of the screen (more pixels per inch, so almost no screen door effect.) Also you can render diffrent things at different resolutions, for example, UI art and text at 4k for optimal readability, game world at a lower resolution. things like that

Anyone know of a good tuttorial to get l4d2 running on SDK2? message me please if you do. I tried a few things I found on google and nothing really works well so far.

I like this approach. Although a 4k 90hz+ display seems a long way off.

It would be sweat if CV1 had g-dync and/or a-sync as well, but that is probably asking way too much for v1.

So a friend is coming over on monday. What should he try out? Didn't bother about new rift demos after I got my Saitek X52 Pro and Elite Dangerous.

What is easy to "play" and really immersive?

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, had a real blast with it. Motorbike being one of my favorite experiences. However I am having an issue with Alien Isolation, can't seem to get the damn thing to work. Using Biliago game manager I can launch it but I can see the two images in my rift, any help guys ?

That's the latest Nvidia driver not playing nice with the Rift. You need to roll back to 344.75.

Vox Machinae demo is a very nice, smooth, simple experience. Great showpiece demo. It's a bummer for the long run that the game itself seems so basic, but I wasn't expecting more.

Doubt I'll ever be able to shake the dream of a decently-budgeted remake of Steel Battalion for this thing, lol.

So should I be expecting a DK2 in 3 days like some people here or the 2-4 weeks listed on the main site? Finally got around to ordering the second model after I had to cancel earlier this year.

Hey guys... I've had my Rift for a long time now, but I've recently started having a problem and I can't find a solution anywhere. Basically, when running in extend mode, the left and right screens are swapped. Using the VR desktop looks fine, but anytime I open a game (with or without VR desktop), the left image is on the right and vice versa. The image also looks similar to how it does on a monitor, with the circular border. Running in direct works fine.

This has me stumped because it was literally working fine one night, then the next night this happened, without making any changes. I've tried swapping around USB ports, reinstalling the drivers and firmware, messing with Nvidia control panel settings, everything I can think of. Anyone heard of or experienced this?

Rollback them video drivers son! Well at least that worked for me.

I've seen the same thing. I think it's a bug with the latest WHQL Nvidia drivers.

The thing that's getting me is that Alien Isolation is no longer working for me despite working perfectly a few days ago. Now the game seems to calibrate my Rift so that looking straight ahead gives me a view that's tilted at a 45 angle and looking downward. Centering the view with the shoulder buttons doesn't help unless I compensate by looking up and tilting my head in the opposite direction before doing so.

The Rift works fine in other games. Reinstalling the Rift runtime doesn't help. Not sure what else to try.

Damn, that's disappointing. They just released drivers with better VR support, and not long after break it completely. I'll try rolling back later.

Delivery on mine is expected today (Calgary). Not bad! I ordered it on the 24th. Technically the next business day.

OMFG! Elite looks fantastic!!! Is there a way to boost RIft performance? Does your graphical settings effect the smoothness of your vr experience? I have pretty powerful system but I noticed that Elite doesn't run as smoothly as Alien Isolation in the Rift.

Specs:
i-7 4960
16gb ram
MSI gtx 980 SLI

The settings definitely matter, but I can't get it running perfectly smooth no matter the settings with my 2600k + 980. A bit of a bummer, but it's still pretty playable with the occasional judder.

Turning shadows off, and setting the "Oculus Quality" slider to half gets it smooth for me. Then move that slider up gradually until you can get it as high as possible without a performance hit.
