LIZARD SQUAD is Back. Planning XBL Attack. "Biggest attack yet". [UP: XBL/PSN Down]

Calling for violence is baseline tough guy bullshit, dude, which you did. Don't put your schoolyard fight logic on me.

I'm not, I'm calling you what you are. If you are going to accuse someone of being in the muck by going in yourself, you are by definition a hypocrite. Someone being put on display to be an example is a fine way to put fear into others to help prevent future issues. This is why in China they have the death penalty for police corruption. If you don't understand any of these concepts you are more childish than anyone you are claiming to argue against.

It's madness that modern software cannot detect frequent calls that an IP address or whatever is making it and just block it.

The server has to inspect packets to get the IP address of the caller. That is a DDoS attack. Checking for that IP address isn't a 'free' operation for the server and they simply overwhelm the server.

Were they worth paying for before the DDoS attack? How does something they can't fend off change your opinion on the service itself?

I reluctantly do so because I want to enjoy the systems. That does not mean I think that Gold and PS+ are justified in any way. Like I just said, I actually think both services are complete hose jobs.

Have you seen the hyperbolic anger in here? People who go to banking sites don't do that. People who play games are happy to provide laughable vitriol, though.

You obviously have never worked in Banking in any capacity. You are dead wrong, they are much worse than what I've seen here.

It's a stupid diversion in this conversation because banking organizations can afford better networking and engineers than game companies and publishers.

Just ignore the fact that DDOS vulnerability has nothing to do with the quality or cost of your networking and engineers.

But they are hose jobs. I already pay for my internet, but have to pay again in order to use it on their devices.

Anyway, I don't want to argue anymore. I just want this shit to stop, so we can move on. We are going to have to agree to disagree.
This could have happened to Netflix, Amazon Prime, insert service here. Are you really going to sit here and say none if those services are worth it anymore because they can get DDOS'D?

the irony of your antagonistic posts is lost on you i guess? or are you a harsh mirror showing us the error of approaching the conversation with angry confidence of our own world view?

Their participation in a DDOS puts them at risk to a system that is more abusive and harsh than any chest-pounding Gaffer can ever be. I'm not sure what else the tough guys want, other than some petty self-satisfaction.

Sure a website, but huge online services? It's crazy that is not preventable.

Why don't they take down banks and shit? :-D

Not worth it. Governments would fuck them up for life, this is just an entertainment platform and these kinds of attacks don't generate benefits. This is not a data mining attack, these are kids being punks.

If someone walked in to papa johns with a gun and shot up the place, you would seriously expect free pizza because of "poor you"?
That's a bit of a tough analogy.

Something like. You were thinking of going to get a pizza but a group of anti-meat protestors clogged up the shop and wouldn't let anyone pass to order a pizza. So now you feel like you should be compensated with a free pizza because you couldnt get in to pay for one yourself.

I reluctantly do so because I want to enjoy the systems. That does not mean I think that Gold and PS+ are justified in any way. Like I just said, I actually think both services are complete hose jobs.

Then you shouldn't be paying for them. Vote with your wallet. Seek alternatives (PC and WiiU).

This could have happened to Netflix, Amazon Prime, insert service here. Are you really going to sit here and say none if those services are worth it anymore because they can get DDOS'D?

No, just these two. Because they effectively hold the internet I already pay for hostage behind a paywall.

Were they worth paying for before the DDoS attack? How does something they can't fend off change your opinion on the service itself?
Why cant a billion dollar company stop something my 12 year old nephew can do from his bedroom? I am not being sarcastic or anything i really want to know why these companies cant stop this shit because from a outsider perspective it seems kind of silly that a group of people can bring down multi million dollar infrastructure like it's fucking nothing but i don't know anything about this kind of stuff.

The only thing i know about DDOS attacks is that people get very angry if you call it hacking because it's scripting. And no, the service isn't worth it if i can't use it.

The difference being that for a lot of people the PSN and XBL pizza's have already been paid for.

Aren't there counter-hackers trying to stave off Lizard Squad? Perhaps there are ways to support them. Being keyboard tough guys yelling into the air seems counterproductive.
And what the fuck are you doing to help?

You're doing exactly the same thing: nothing. Why act high and mighty about it?

Then you shouldn't be paying for them. Vote with your wallet. Seek alternatives (PC and WiiU).

I own a Wii U. But anyway, I reluctantly pay because the systems have games that I want to fully enjoy. But if this shit becomes a regular thing, then I absolutely will stop subbing.

That's a bit of a tough analogy.

Might need to add the fact that you already pre-paid a monthly fee for pizza to be available to you when you are hungry and you couldn't get one because of above situation. It is still the responsibility of the service provider to be able deliver what customers are paying for.

Have you seen the hyperbolic anger in here? People who go to banking sites don't do that. People who play games are happy to provide laughable vitriol, though.

What? I worked as an IT tech, the second a baking page failed to load I got tickets opened in less than a minute. When I moved to a multinational corporation to work as SA on virtual servers after 5 seconds of a server not responding we got massive critical tickets opened to resolve the issue in less than 30 minutes.

The fact that PSN is still down it is a clear show that Sony doesn't takes seriously the availability of PSN as a service otherwise they would push for a 99.9% availability. So far PSN doesn't even qualify for a Two nines (99% availability = 3.65 days down per year) and if I get pushed I would say that so far PSN should be between 96 to 97% availability which is a pretty crappy service.

WE WANT SONY TO GET OFF THEIR ASS AND FIX IT!
WHEN MY INTERNET GOES DOWN I RESET MY MODEM AND IT WORKS!

WHY CANT THEY GOT OFF THEIR ASSES AND JUST RESET THEIR MODEMS?!

I just wish I could play my digital games. It's sad to know that if I don't have Internet my digital library is worthless.

You obviously have never worked in Banking in any capacity. You are dead wrong, they are much worse than what I've seen here.

So much this. Seems like zero actual experience about that sector, yet he's using it in an argument with such confidence. Please STAHP for your own sake.

Punitive justice system does not really work. This has been established and there really are only emotional justifications. I understand the frustration, these actions cause a lot of damage and frustration, but if the perpetrators are young then there really is no need for public floggings or long prison sentences. Kids go through phases, I might have done something similar back in the day when I was going through anxiety and lashed out. I just did not have the tools available nor the knowledge to pull off something like this. I have a hard time believing these Lizard Squad members are adults as they want followers and use terminology one hears in CS 1.6 matches. Then again, I might be wrong as people are loons. The best thing that can come out of this is flushing this whole "you must be connected to our service in order to XYZ" - idea down the toilet. We all knew it was bad from the get-go. You can't expect reptilian humanoids to act properly, and maybe they can not be tracked (hopefully they slip up at some point) but as customers you have power.

While it's hard to prevent them, it's not hard to hardening your network to help mitigate the damage. I typically recommend the following services to my clients;

https://www.blacklotus.net/
http://www.prolexic.com/

These guys rock when it comes to mitigating DDoS attacks and I've seen them in action several times. Perhaps it's time for both networks, hell, everyone conduct an audit and then hit these guys up.
Blacklotus sucks. I don't have experience with prolexic but an old clan of mine was under some heavy ddos attacks, nowhere near the size lizardsquad will be sending out mind you and our site was down for a week straight and Blacklotus basically said "the attack is too powerful take your business elsewhere we're not wasting resources dealing with an attack of that size" and cancelled it.

Keep in mind this was a few years ago now before ddos attacks got as popular as they are today, so protection probably wasn't anywhere near as good as it is today, but man fuck blacklotus.

It's been explained countless of times. Check this thread for an explanation. Or simply google it. I didn't know till yesterday admittedly, but it makes sense why they can't do anything about it. It's one of those loopholes that's in the nature of how the internet works.

Damn, one full day.

There had better be $0.137 credit per day of unavailable service in my PSN wallet after this is over.

It's a stupid diversion in this conversation because banking organizations can afford better networking and engineers than game companies and publishers.

So you're intentionally using a "stupid diversion?" And banking organizations having better networks or engineers still doesn't make them exempt from this kind of attack. The only thing that makes criminals hesitate to attack Banks and other major institutions is that Law Enforcement would jump on it even faster and be even more determined to catch the perpetrators.

But I already payed for the pizza. I had a year subscription with them.

If you set your PS4 as your primary console you can play them offline.

Not true. My PS4 has been my primary console since day 1 and a couple weeks ago my internet was offline for two days and all my digital games were inaccessible.
