LIZARD SQUAD is Back. Planning XBL Attack. "Biggest attack yet". [UP: XBL/PSN Down]

This is pretty fucking frustrating, I'm just trying to play Dragon Age but it can't connect to the servers so I can't access Dragon Age Keep.

It is really time for the governments to step in and actually force the internet to grow up. It is unbelievable there is still no real fast way to act on this while people get arrested for the stupidest small thing or fined for something like leaving apple pits on the street. There needs to be more accountability for people's internet presence.

We really should institute a policy for banning posts and threads that mention Lizard Squad.

All they want is attention, and we're feeding it to them.

Lizard Squad isn't looking for '500 replies on NeoGaf'
they are looking for attention on Twitter

the scary thing is, if you look at their page, there are people that condone what they are doing and actually support this crap.

I know! It's like we were all "attacked". They can't even make the story seem like we'll be fine once this all blows over. It's all over the place: MSNBC, FOX, and local news stations.

This is the headline from Fox News: http://www.foxnews.com/

It's either going to help the industry or produce more BS around it.

What I got from this is that Dish blocked Fox News, I should switch to Dish

It's like the murder mystery of the toy maker. Toys were fun, but murder is something serious.

The world is full of so many people, just a shame that a portion of them are idiots (like these guys).

someone says this on every page
go to your settings
go to PSn
and then sign out

have fun playing dragon age

Though now that i'm forced to finally play dragon age, I'm realizing i'm not that into it anyway, and was probably another $60 that I didn't need to spend

That sounds bad as all hell maybe PSN is down for good?

You heard it here first guys, PSN is down for good. They initiated the DDOS Fire attack, makes all the servers and backups catch on fire, and makes Sony legally obligated to not rebuild PSN.

Computers are complicated these days!

That won't happen for another 50 years.

Apparently this was a an NTP amplification (monlist vulnerabilities) type attack on PSN
It's a DNS Amplification attack. It's actually a rather new ddos method, that's extremely powerful (Up to 300gb/s attacks without much effort or actual power). That amount of power is extremely easy to come by with this type of attack and it's why there has been a lot more ddos attacks these past few months. Before this new method came out, 300gb/s attacks were very rare.

Edit: This video kinda explains it https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=xTKjHWkDwP0

(Not saying this to you directly, just quoting you because a bunch of people were asking to explain what it means)

Watching the news right now and there is talk of Sony filing a lawsuit against Twitter for not taking down accounts that are doing this. I hope they do.

Stated earlier in this thread but local news wplg had a story on this last night. They confirmed it was happening to Sony systems but stated Microsoft ones were unconfirmed.

Yet these types of attacks are able to be mitigated...

I looked it up on wikipedia but didn't understand it. Can anyone dumb it down a little?

Please elaborate.

NTP servers synchronize clocks across the net. If you have ever set recent versions of Windows (and OSX, Linux, whatever) to "update automatically with Internet time" it was using a public NTP server.

(the following is my guess at what is going on, if it's true it was NTP amplification)

The 'monlist' command returns the last (I think) 600 or so IPs of computers that had accessed it. This means the reply to that command from the server is MUCH larger than sending the command to it. Repeat that a whole shitload of times and you have the receiving end crapping itself. The people doing this fake their own IP addresses specifically for this, and manipulate it so those replies are flooding the other end.

Wandered afk, this has probably been explained much better by right now when I'm hitting submit reply.

Wildly specific. There's a story here I'm guessing.
Not really, it was the stupidest thing I could think off out of the paper when local law enforcement and administrators got the right to handle a couple of laws themselves.
(And apparantly, a cherry pit, not an apple pit: http://www.hln.be/hln/nl/959/Bizar/...GAS-boete-voor-kersenpit-in-Nieuwstraat.dhtml )

That won't happen for another 50 years.
Indeed. You actually need politicians that know what an internet is to get something done.

Please elaborate.

Its a vulnerability with NTP (network time protocol). A remote computer sends a NTP query to a victims server, which responds with the last 600 queries it had from different IP addresses, but they mask it so it looks like the query came from the victims server itself. Since it is a large request and if done repeatedly it could easily take down a network.

LS was bragging that they had rooted routers connecting transatlantic networks.

Relatively big story in the UK.

BBC News has reported on it about 4-5 times in the last two hours but are hesitant to put any blame on Lizard Squad. They're saying it's affecting both consoles and are explaining what a DDOS attack is clearly.

For the people asking what NTP amplification attack is. It is basically a new form of DDOS which consume far more bandwidth on the affected servers since it use amplifiers to increase the traffic for every package send from destiny by taking advantage of NTP protocols.

I'm confused. Why is Sony blaming Twitter exactly? Are the attacks coming from Twitter hosts?

Twitter is helping give them the attention they want, one of the reasons they're doing this.

I would argue it's breaking Twitter's own rules as they're essentially admitting to breaking the law.

I think CNN is helping with the attention more than Twitter is. Sony should sue CNN too.

They're indirectly promoting this BS by keeping their accounts up. They're feeding off attention and if their Twitter accounts are gone, they'll have less of a reason to keep the attack going.

Why does Twitter allow their accounts to stay up when they're saying they did this? Fear of being DDoSed themselves?
I assume because Twitter can't read the billions of tweets sent every day. Even if they cancel accounts the kids can create another one.

In any case, people must report these accounts and they should be doing something not allowed by the Twitter ToS to make sure Twitter closes them and silently send their location to the police.
