LIZARD SQUAD is Back. Planning XBL Attack. "Biggest attack yet". [UP: XBL/PSN Down]

So I'm confused. I see people saying its up for them but it's definitely down for me. Is it sporadic outages? U.S. PSN Network here

The misinformation is spreading fast thanks to the media... One of my mates has just picked up a PS4 and has said "I don't want to put my card details in cos it's been hacked again, hasn't it?"

>_<

I for one think it is a reasonable decision not to add a credit card to any of Sony's services. Not because of this attack, but because Sony's behaviour when it was hacked back in 2011. They apologised, but it is way safer just to buy a PS Network card and add credit manually. That is what I have been doing since.

Meanwhile, somewhere in Kyoto.

Nobody did that joke before, congrats. /s

So PS4 PSN is still down?

There must be something going on at Sony or they are slowly rolling out the login server. This is getting ridiculous.

The attacks have stopped for 12 hours now.

Sony should outsource their servers to Microsoft. At least they have their Sh!t together. They both get DDoS-ed and M$ is back up that day. Epic Fail Sony!

This entire experience has basically shown me how freaking fragile the entire internet is.

If some script kiddies in a basement somewhere can bring down two entertainment networks almost on a whim thanks to a botnet, wtf can a capable country or terrorist action do to the economy by virtue of banging out a DDOS attack in greater scale?

Seriously.

They apologized, gave everyone some free games, and it cost no one a single penny.

I'll never understand why people are so paranoid about their CC info getting hacked. You're not liable for anything.

I can't speak for the attackers obviously but it seems like something they enjoy doing because it is making some people suffer implicitly. Whether or not they can gloat on Twitter seems like icing on the cake.

You're probably right. Taking away the icing would take away the (mainstream) gloating, at least.

Xbox live for both Xbox 360 and Xbox one is fine and running, PSN for PS3 and Vita is fine and running, but PSN for PS4 is still having a lot of traffic.

Edit:
I'm using bf4stats as measurements:

Anyone seen this anywhere else? Legit?

Sony will be offering two free games from an unspecified list for Playstation 4, Playstation 3 or Playstation Vita titles to PlayStation Network members as part of its apology for the Playstation Network Outage over the Christmas Period.

Playstation Plus members will receive a small credit to their Playstation Plus accounts plus free access to its premium service Music Unlimited for a month

It's just a big hassle. I never carry cash with me , just my debit card. So when it happens we have to wait a couple of weeks for a new card.

But it is something I rather not have to deal with.

Just the fact that they would rather lie and pretend the leak had not happened instead of communicating their clients their information could be at risk is enough for me not to trust them with my credit card's details. And it is so easy to buy the credit online with someone else that it doesn't really affect me at the slightest.

Oh of course. It obviously gets blood boiling but the reports would still stream in and people would be getting mad at something else rather than Twitter. This is a structural issue within a connected society that will not be solved by suspending an account on a social network. Not saying it shouldn't be done but some people overestimate the actual damage it will do.

It has been told multiple times, but if PSN/XBL isn't time-critical service (that requires tens of milliseconds response time) there are much more ways to apply filtering, make the infrastructure more robust, and such. However that's not the case.

There are network services other than games that requires some response time too. And guess what? Those are usually not connected to internet directly.

Remember the days when you could play your game the minute you installed it on Christmas morn? Or even further back with cartridges when you could play it the minute you took it out of the box?

You can't see the difference between Twitter and CNN? Well, ok then.
Have you seen he quality of CNN lately? It's basically on par with a drunk teenager on Twitter ranting about their parents not letting them borrow the car.

Twitter shouldn't boot these guys.

If they are taken to court, this sort of stuff lends for great evidence.
They have called out the FBI multiple times and have admitted their wrongdoing. That sort of evidence tells us they know and understand the severity of their actions.

Except when you decide to talk to your bank about it and they do a chargeback on a bunch of charges on your account to be safe, and the banker includes your PSN account since it was Sony and was compromised, and because of Sony's chargeback policies, you've now lost everything forever. Maybe you can get your stuff back if you call them. There you might be liable for losing days and days of time on the phone trying to convince Sony customer service that you were hacked. I know how difficult that can be from personal experience with Sony and trying to get random FIFA charges on my account reversed that were very obviously not mine.

Eh. I'd rather have better performance by streaming from a harddrive over a disc.

And honestly, games install lightning fast on the PS4. Driveclub was installed within 2 minutes for me.

ip viking is still showing significant attacks being conducted right now.

the door knocking example is perfect, and exactly why you cannot necessarily defend against this type of attack.

i want to know if the FBI is involved. that youtube video posted earlier in this thread from the radio show helped provide some details around their profiles.

I'm sure Twitter would be able to access an archive of their tweets regardless of whether or not the account is suspended.

Sony needs to pony up for good DDoS mitigation services from one or more CDNs and offload their primary authentication there.

At the gate, they can whitelist all the IPs of PS4s previously connected to PSN and deal with filtering the rest later since it is statistically certain that the vast majority of the malicious traffic will come from IP addresses that do not have a PS4 system associated with them.

this just shows the Internet needs to be more regulated.

Regulation is unlikely to alleviate issues of this specific nature, because it doesn't address the reason these kinds of attacks are possible.

I'm super-skeptical. Until we see an actual official PR statement from Sony, take it with a grain of salt.

So is this one of those things that if we ignore them they go away? I can't imagine spending my time and money just to be a dick to millions of people.

Ignoring these kinds of things is unlikely to change anything, except cause escalation. Someone who *would* spend time and (likely someone else's) money to be mean to millions of people, wouldn't give up just because nobody tweets about them.

Can anyone explain why I'm able to get online with my PS3 and can view the mobile app but cannot get online be with my PS4?

PSN doesn't exist on a single server in a single datacenter, it is a massive distributed infrastructure that exists across multiple servers in multiple regions, and likely split between older systems (like PS3 PSN) and the newer PSNs. It may have one name in the mind of the consumer, PSN, but behind the scenes we're likely looking at PSN-Vita-EU1, PSN-Vita-EU2, PSN-Vita-NA1, PSN-PS3-NA1, PSN-PS3-NA2, etc. Lots of systems, all presenting a unified front, but are actually very discreet and disparate structures that communicate with each other (badly, sometimes).

CURRENT STATUS:

PSN-EU: Unstable
PSN-NA: Unstable

XBL-EU: Unstable?
XBL-NA: Unstable

Reasons: While the initial DDoS group claims they're no longer attacking, there's a good chance smaller no-name groups are using this as cover to poke a few things, which in conjunction with the existing Christmas flood of new users, is crippling services. It'll work for some, and not for others, randomly, depending on a variety of factors. There may still be lasting damage from yesterday's attack too, which compounds the problem. Also, just because a botnet was given the stop command, doesn't mean every single one of the millions of infected PCs has reacted yet, so there might still be additional fake traffic adding yet more issues.

It's ridiculous this problem hasn't been resolved already, it's down for me once again after being up before I went to be in the wee hours of the morning.

Remember the days when you could play your game the minute you installed it on Christmas morn? Or even further back with cartridges when you could play it the minute you took it out of the box?

yeah, literally seconds after opening the box i was already playing. we've gone so far backwards from that convenience it's quite unbelievable. nowadays it can take a goddamn hour to start playing if PSN decides to be particularly slow for me with updates and patches.

oh well, at least i have the memories.
