LIZARD SQUAD is Back. Planning XBL Attack. "Biggest attack yet". [UP: XBL/PSN Down]

I think it's not a matter of Twitter "allowing them" so much as Twitter Support is fucking terrible and slow. See also the abusive voices of the Gamergate "movement".
Twitter suspensions, when they do happen and are not temporary (unless tweets are specific death threats, people usually seem to get suspended for a day, often less) are pointless, as the person can and will just create a new account in two minutes, ad infinitum.

Assholes can also tweet abusive shit and then lock down their accounts, preventing people from seeing/reporting said tweets. Only those following the account and the person the tweet was sent to will see it, until the account is unlocked.

Also, in cases of illegal activity like this it's possible accounts are left open to log data/gather evidence. I don't know how true that really is though.

I can currently login to PSN on the Vita and the Android app just fine.

They're mostly attacking just one of the main gateways to the SEN network.

Yep. As you stated, suspending or banning the account may have the reverse effect and just embolden the offender to continue registering alts. It's a real messy business.

So Live is back up long before PSN, really makes me want to sell my PS4 and get an Xbox. Its hard to have faith in sony being able to protect themselves and serve their customers.

I'm sure you won't regret this decision, no chance. Never seizes to amaze me how dumb people can be with their money.

I had a thought earlier about this;

I suspect these kids/fucktrumpets think they're internet heroes or something. One of these days, one of them is going to announce proudly to someone in the local pub "Haha! I was one of the Lizard Squad!" expecting some sort of awed kudos, and be totally baffled when they receive a punch in the mouth.

I think MS was simply well equipped before the attack due to the amount of servers they have. I don't think you can blame Sony here really.

As people said before, even if they did increase their amount of servers that doesn't stop the culprit from ramping up the attack.

They could use a more robust infrastructure and have better DDOS mitigation. Despite what people say in this thread, it is possible to protect against DDOS attacks.

It is possible to *mitigate* up to a point, depending on how much you want to spend, or overspend in trying to predict the size of the next attack. But you cannot stop a large-scale one from having an effect, and still have customers get in. It's just not possible. The best DDoS mitigation in the world can only react to a threat after it has happened (the speed of how quickly it mitigates can be influenced by past data on that attack type), but you're still looking at an end-user perceivable effect, no matter what.

I'll be glad when this passes, was hoping to play some Far Cry 4 on the PS4 at some point today, but trying to redeem the code for the "4 games, choose 1" deal, I just get this:

Just a game obviously, and I already have it on the PC, still tho.

sad-kid-reaction-gif.gif

I'll gladly take the PS4 version if you already have it for PC. All in the spirit of Christmas of course Mr. Picard. :P

It'll be hard to go to the pub when you're in prison.

Okay, good. I still think the achievements app should be loadable offline. Hopefully that is in their plans.....
Wouldn't count on that. The achievements on Xbox One are totally different than 360. They are server based to allow devs easier and more flexible access to it, provides more stats and tracking, ect. The downside to that is what you are seeing now.

I wish there was a way I could get a notification or something for when PSN comes back online. This is getting really annoying. There is plenty of stuff I can do but I'd really like to play some games. Fuck.

Considering just how much of Microsoft's Infrastructure is based in server hardware and such, I really don't understand how anyone could fault Sony for this.

Have we had any confirmation that the attack on either service is over?

But thing is these lizard guys have done this before even this year, why sony didnt do what you suggested?. Is the problem that they see this as kids trolling them so no need to Invest on that?.

Hope there is some considerable effort put into catching these guys, gotta figure both companies are pretty pissed about their networks being down on one of the busiest days of the year

But then comes Uncharted 4 and you won't be able to play it because you sold your console because of two days not being able to use PSN.

I understand the anger but decisions made out of anger often are regretted down the line.

Because what he suggests isn't exactly easy or even possible in the way he's saying.

The group that claimed responsibility for yesterday's visible DDoS says they're not behind the current issues with XBL and PSN. That's about as much confirmation as you can get, and personally I don't quite believe them.

No its not.

With out proccessing the data coming in there is no way to know who is legit or not. And the only way to stop a dos would be to not even receive the bad data.

It's really as simple as that.

LOL, no thread is safe from the console warz.

I just hope Sony does some sort of public post-mortem in regards to the attack. If they aren't just incompetent, they could use this as an opportunity to flex a bit and talk about how they made a terrible situation better from a security perspective.

It's been mentioned previously, you'd need to filter and check every connection and the nature of online gaming doesn't allow for that kind of lag.

As I understand it.

No its not.

Also this. Thinking about it, a committed DDOS attack would probably bring down the technology put in place to protect against DDOS attacks...

Easy, you should have bought driveclub and get the PSN app on your mobile. When its comes online its ding ding, ding ding fucking game alerts.

What? I do have Driveclub digital version. Are you being serious about getting alert when it's back online or was that just sarcasm. Sorry I have a hard time telling anymore. And driveclub hasn't worked right since I got it on release day. Not sure about lately though because I haven't started it in weeks.

What exactly should they do?

If Microsoft and Sony up their capacity the group would just have to do the same

How are you supposed to filter fake logins from legitimate ones without making everything incredibly slow in the process?

Just because it's possible doesn't mean it is feasible. At some point, there's very little you can do to defend against a large-scale DDoS attack when you have limited funds and (more importantly) time. Things like server load balancing, cloud service mitigation or external mitigation take a very long time to integrate.

Did some research on DDoS attacks and the Law.

There was one case where a man was fined $183k for a one minute attack:

Wisconsin Man Fined $183k For Minute-long DDoS Attack Participation

The Department of Justice recently fined Eric Rosol of Wisconsin $183,000, or $3,050 per second, for his one-minute involvement in an attack on Koch Industries. Aaron Swartz was threatened with 35 years in prison over a terms-of-service violation. Swartz was not a hacker, and did not do anything wrong in many peoples’ minds. So what was Swartz indicted for? Downloading too many academic articles as an authorized guest user on the M.I.T. network.

Here is quote from an article on the "Legality of DDoS: Criminal Deed vs. Act of Civil Disobedience."

link

In the United States, the people that take part in DDoS attacks run the risk of being charged with legal offenses at the federal level, both criminally and civilly. The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) is the applicable law (18 U.S.C. §1030). For a person to violate the CFAA, he has to intentionally cause damages to a computer system part of interstate or foreign commerce (18 U.S.C. § 1030(a)(5)(A)) (http://www.technicallylegal.org/the-legality-of-denial-of-service-attacks/, 2010). Attempted DDoS attacks may also be prosecuted (http://users.atw.hu/denialofservice/ch08lev1sec2.html).
