LIZARD SQUAD is Back. Planning XBL Attack. "Biggest attack yet". [UP: XBL/PSN Down]

Ok that makes sense. It's not that they didn't protect, it's just that they didn't predict the degree to which an attack like this might have happened.

well the underlying issue is that the attack is much more scale-able than its mitigation, from an infrastructure and cost perspective.

PSN is still fried for me.

Got to play online on the xbox last night though, what bothers me is my homie that lives literally around the corner from me couldn't get online on either one.

Welp, can't access PSN anymore. At least I got to log on last night and cop that good good from my boy Xur.

I am playing far cry 4 more than I otherwise would be. That game....good lord that game.

The way I see it, LizardSuckwads or MS owes me money. Specifically a day's worth of XBL Gold and counting. Sure it's like a buck fifty but fuck it. It's the principle of the matter.

Playing with my money is like playing with my emotions
A buck fifty for a day? Do you pay like $500 a year for live?

Exactly. Also, you need to always have your defense structures on, but for an attack, an asshole, or a group of assholes only need to rent bots for a day.

Can anyone explain what these botnets are ?

Are these just infected computers and "hackers" can use all of them at once to start an attack ?

And if yes => How gets one hacker access to millions of PCs ?

This has most likely been posted a hundred time already but what is the point of doing this? there is nothing that you can achieve with this other then destroying for a lot of people in the holidays. There is so many ugly thing i want to say to them that i most likely would have gotten a ban from this site if i said it. Sony and Microsoft must be tired of these attacks.

PSN works for me. I tried for the first time now, i got to the Store and played a BF4 game (Europe)
You are a lucky person. According to bf4stats, there are only 1,500 users playing bf4 on ps4 right now.
To put some context, there are 20,000 users playing xbox one version, and usually there are more people playing the ps4 version, so I think it's reasonable to assume there are 20,000+ people who would like to play bf4 on PS4 right now and can't access the servers.

I am in Europe (Spain) and I can't play right now.

I was able to play 2am-5am EST on PSN this morning. And it goes down again early in the morning when people started to wake up. Which makes me believe a lot of these network issues are primarily driven by a rush of new Christmas users with the problem being exacerbated by DDoS attacks.

I also have an issue of the purchases of games I made several days ago, still haven't been registered as being purchased. Its in my Library but when I try to DL it tells me I have to purchase them- and gives me an error.

Regardless, this is an opportune time to convert these new (Christmas gift) users into paying subscribers to the Plus service, and continued unreliability makes a poor first impression and a less than convincing argument for them to pony up for any premium service.

There is no point. People have found a shiny button they can press to make the internet squeak, and so they press it. That they do so without reservations, is what makes me label them as sociopaths.

Botnets are computers infected with malware. The malware is invisible, and doesn't harm the computer or make it stop working in any way, so the owners of infected PCs rarely realize they're part of the botnet. The malware phones home to a nondescript IRC channel to see if there are any commands for it. If someone has the password to get in to the IRC channel, they can tell the millions of PCs to all attack a target. No "hackers" involved. It's cheap, costing as low as $40 to get access for an hour to a largeish botnet.

I thought Kim dotcom made a deal with these guys so they'd stop? But both xbl and psn are still having problems. What gives?

The group claims they've stopped. It's up to you if you want to believe them or not. If they have, there is likely still a lot of DDoS activity bouncing around (just because you tell a botnet to stop, doesn't erase all the damage done along the way, or make them stop immediately).

LizSquad are just Anonymous wannabees. I hope they all die or better yet get rapped in prison everyday for the rest of their lives.

Hey Junior, just a quick tip because I feel like being nice. You aren't going to last long around here posting shit like that.

This is just completely unacceptable now! Both Sony and Microsoft get taken down, no surprise that XBL is getting going again much faster than Sony. I do not own an XBone, but I do a 360, and I never experienced anything yesterday. Unlike PSN on my PS4. I own a PS3 and it's core service was back up late last night. The PSN Store isn't though. And here is south Missouri I still have nothing on my PS4. I could play something offline, but my experience is that when I earn a trophy offline it doesn't register even when online services are running and I get logged on. So I'm not wasting my time. I'll play some backlogged games on my 360. Sony needs to take a hard look at ways to prevent this sh!t from happening again. It happens every month or so. PSN should be CPSN (Can't Play Sh!t Network)!

Also the rumor that Sony is giving a "Welcome Back" package, 2 free games, better be true. And M$ should do the same. We deserve, NO! WE ARE ENTITLED TO THEM because of their incompetence to keep networks up through attacks. I used to work for an ISP and DDoS attacks went through are networks all the time. It is NOTHING to stop them even before they go through to their intended destination.

Its probably time to stop posting. This shit is pathetic.

So the problem is that there are millions of users who do not use proper AntiVirus-software and therefore botnets are even possible ?

Man, this is still going on? Now I'm really glad that 24 hour online check-in thing was rejected. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to play any ga!es at all on my day off.

Anyways, I've been fortunate enough to still be able to log on to PSN and play online without any problems whatsoever. Haven't been able to access the Store though. At least not this morning.

Wow. I'll never understand how these people can just gloat about cyber terrorism like this and just get away with it. Surely we have people that can track them, right? ....right?

The problem is that participants can be from around the globe and hell they dont even have to act directly

Is it true that some of them utilize botnets of infected computers to participate in attacks?

Your PC could be a part of it and you might not even know it

Yup. China is currently the largest culprit here, having millions of infected PCs. South Korea comes in a close second, due to their superfast internet and "cyber cafe" culture where cheap PCs are set up to be rented out to play games on, and they're usually quite infected.

time to check your router outbound settings and see if you have certain devices pinging IP's that are not supposed to be doing anything unexpected.

Your PC would have to have no antivirus, firewall, or basic safeguards against infection. That's probably a tall order for an internet-aware poster on GAF.
