Halo 5: Guardians Beta Thread | Hot Red on Blue Action

On second thought, can we campaign for a new rocket launcher design?

It just looks so out of place for a Halo game.

That rocket launcher is going to be the go-to weapon for many I'd think - it's two second lock on, right? Doesn't matter how far away you are?

You know exactly what. Unless 343 really do want to get as far away as possible from Classic Halo, this RL downgrade is just for "immersion" or "feeling badass" for any migrating CoD players.

I mean look at this

and compare it to the new RL.

That's such a stretch. I don't know why everyone is so quick to pin every little change on "catering the CoD players". I'm sure they're going to flock to Halo 5 when they find out the rocket launcher looks different.

It definitely looks more based in 20th century weapon design than the old one.

Also, magazine.. not clip people.

Can't believe people get so tore up over a weapon model.

Agreed. It just looks like a brown incineration cannon to me. And there's four different rifles why not have another variant of a rocket? I'm stoked about prophets bane, and as long as the originals don't go away I'm happy to see the new stuff.

I don't think it's chasing the cod crowd that's bugging me. It's that this isn't the iconic Rocket Lawn Chair I've come to love since Halo CE.

No more SPNKr. No more rotating dual tube action. Just a generic looking green pipe. It's like taking the AR and making it look like an M16 or turning the BR into a FAMAS. Just change for the sake of change I guess.

Rocket is nowhere near AR or BR tier, in terms of iconic look.
I would say just as iconic as either

It's just one of those things that has no effect on gameplay really, so it's whatever to me. Certainly not going to lose my shit over it.

Yeah not getting the big deal over what it looks like. It's a rocket launcher, it blows shit up. The end. (Though i must admit the Hydra looks cool as fuck.) Wish they'd bring back the "pro pipe".

Hey, I'm just kinda disappointed that the concept artists weren't creative enough and settled on something generic. The SPNKr is awesome, and it's kind of a bummer to see it change, for what I feel, is for the worse.

I have little doubt it was designed to accommodate ADS, the old one was way too big, and would have looked dumber than the AR in ADS mode.

Gonna have to go with Rammy on this one.

Also:

Didn't they state that even the BR horns are mostly half/half in the office in terms of liking the design (hence they can change)? I'm sure not all of the aesthetics are final.

I'm not a fan of the horns, but I think visually, it's better to have that space in the middle for gameplay purposes.

God you guys have the biggest hard-on for COD. Everything remotely different from Halo is COD.

Well it sure doesnt look like the doom rocket launcher, the halo rocket launcher, the UT rocket launcher, the Quake Rocket launcher or the half life rocket launcher.

Any other series I should mention?

When a game is as large and ubiquitous as COD, it is hard not to draw comparison to its when game design and aesthetic elements end up being similar.

Hmm? Are you kidding me? Does that Rocket look anything like the classic Halo Rocket? No.

Unless I should point the blame to 343's terribly bland art direction, this is change for the sake of making other players (CoD, or you know, just "modern" players) feel right at home.

If they want this to be a "new" launcher, so be it. But don't say it's classic, and they could at least change how the gun behaves.

Personally, I disagree. The Rocket Launcher's design didn't change as radically in-between games, even compared to the BR from H3-H4. Why the sudden need to change it now?
Yep. I'd say the classic RL is more iconic than the BR for example. The RL has been in every Halo game, while the BR wan't in H1, ODST or Reach. And, as you said, the design itself has been pretty consistent throughout the years, unlike the BR.

But hey, the classic design wasn't generic enough, and the modern shooter crowd didn't respond well to it in the playtests, so obviously it had to go, just like the classic scopes (too elegant and unobtrusive)

Halo exists in the future where you could create/design whatever you wanted, unbound by realistic need. Instead of creativity, and because "but my immersion" they reverted as hard as they could to ape modern day expectations. It's lazy.

And no, the absurdly reductive argument stating that people will come to Halo 5 over the look of the rocket launcher is completely missing the point. It's this change in tandem with many others that have proven 343i wants Halo to not look like Halo.

Why is this even an argument people are trying to make?

Top to bottom, everything about the Halo franchise's representation of their future Earth marine corp has always been conservative as hell. Their vehicles, their weaponry, their armor.

The rocket launcher redesign looking like a conventional, modern rocket launcher is in line with everything this franchise has ever done when it comes to military equipment, not "suddenly trying to pander to the CoD players"

If you don't like the redesign, that's fine, I don't think it looks particularly great either, but people need to keep some perspective when it comes to this franchise's artsyle.

Lol that does not explain why the Rockets have not changed until now. Only now, in a game that will force gameplay mechanics for "immersion", is the artstyle changing for certain aspects of the universe.

I loved the beta and gameplay, rocket launcher is actually a complaint I have, feels out of place and doesn't look iconic, like the shotgun. Please change it back 343.

Have you even looked at the difference between Bungie made Halo games and Halo 4? Because if you're going to sit there and tell me that the art style in the Bungie games is even remotely close to the "conservative" nature of 4? Or what we've seen of 5? You're flat out mistaken. I'd also make the case that while Halo's artstyle may not have been the advent-garde movement you're attempting to say I'm implying? It certainly has has a lot more style and character than this rocket launcher has.

If you can't see the general drastic shift in design to a vastly more conservative, modern military style in 343i made games? Then I'd debate that you're the one who needs some perspective.

Whilst I agree with the new design being utterly pointless and arguably looking worse this whole ''It's because of COD'' shite that people keep lazily spewing out is borderline moronic.

If anything 343 probably thought they could do a better job modelling a rocket launcher for the Halo series. Sadly for them they haven't.

I definitely agree but I'd also argue that as time went on and Bungie pushed graphical fidelity, their designs also got closer to that as well.

I still hate the "nanosuit" texture the new armor has.
