LIZARD SQUAD is Back. Planning XBL Attack. "Biggest attack yet". [UP: XBL/PSN Down]

I'm assuming XBL is still getting hammered, as I've been at "Loading... please wait" on FH2 for about 20 minutes :(

Oddly, XBL claims to be perfectly fine, no issues, and was the first to come back up after the DDoS two days ago. Though I have seen people saying they're having problems, but Xbox Support isn't indicating if there is a major issue.

Best as I can tell XBL is still getting hammered but Microsoft seems to either have a better method of dealing with DDoS attacks or simply have the ability to move certain aspects of XBL functionality from one place to another to mitigate the hit on all services as their network doesn't seem to be up, per se, but is hobbling along after a few retries. Login works but the store is godawful slow and various things I've tried to use (EA Access for example) simply don't seem to want to function.

PSN, though, is dead a doornail. No login, no store access, no nothin'. For half my games to launch I actually have to go turn off network access since it thinks it's "online" but it never hears back from the PSN server and just keeps trying and trying and trying and never loads the game (Disney Infinity, for example, is doing this, and the Jackbox games set obviously won't work without a networked login).

I'm about to try a hard reboot and see if that helps.

Whoa just saw this over on the Bungie forums. Not certain of the validity but here it is. http://www.brashgames.co.uk/2014/12/26/sony-to-offer-free-games-and-services-for-psn-outage/
Yessssss, hope this is true. I renewed my PS+ sub an hour or two ago. Hopefully they do the credit thing by who is a member at the end of all this, not just who was at the beginning. That vague "customer service" source doesn't exactly instill confidence though.

Fake and already posted.
Welp.

So these attacks come mostly from China and Russia, right? because they don't care about botnets and so won't stop them.
Would they care if those same botnets were turned against them? would the Chinese and Russian governments do something about them if they were the ones shut down from DDos?

I don't need a freebie for this. I'd rather the dick heads doing the attacking be punished.

They claim they are teaching MS and Sony a lesson. Lessons goes the other way too. If they don't get hunted and serve some time then this all continues. There will always be a hole for someone to attack. Only thing you got is not give them reason or make the penalty way to harsh for the crime. In the interviews they are supposedly given are true it sound like they are trying to get jobs out of this by showing their skills. Crazy.

All those parents who worked hard to give their kids some joy and let them have some time together messed up by these guys. Somehow I think they believe these people will have sympathy for their criminal act. I will be very surprised it that works out for them.

China and Russia have been the source of things like this for more than a decade now.

It's cheap and they don't get caught.

This is the second time that article has come up - it has no sources, no confirmation from an actual Sony rep, Sony has released no official press statement. So for now, I'm thinking it's just wishful thinking and tabloid reporting, until Sony releases an actual statement.

I hadn't seen it posted or reported so I thought I'd share. Huge grain of salt should be taken with this though and I would like to know where it originated but with the way the circus has been today it could all be fabricated for all I know. I thought it'd be an interesting read at the least.

IF that is legit, the free games will most likely be games that have already been given away prior as PS+ games, which would most likely be new to PS4 owners who got one for Christmas (unless they were aware you can claim PS+ games for systems you don't own to build a library once/if you get that system).

The US, Europe, China and Russia all have zombie botnets. China just happens to have a much large portion of the various botnets, because of the sheer volume of infected PCs that exist there.

There isn't much a government could actually do in this case I think, other than institute a national mandatory "run an anti-malware on your machines" day or something like it. Perhaps laws that require companies and cyber cafes to comply with malware checks - but I'm not sure if that would make a real difference. It's an intriguing proposal though.

suppose it were true - why should they owe anything besides 2 days worth of the psn+ sub fee?

the free games they gave years ago for the hack, sure, that was cool. they don't owe anyone anything this time around.

I wouldn't call it accurate since it is not tracking everything just a limited number of sources.

What is slightly disturbing though is the random blimps you see coming out of the Atlantic Ocean.

Yeah I don't get that. What the hell is in the middle of the Atlantic that the military are using?! I looked on Google maps and all I could find in that area is a tiny tiny island I've never heard of.

There might not be anything actually there, it's just a geolocation used when identifying certain types of traffic as being military, or traffic self-identifying as such.

I haven't had a single issue with xbl all day.

Mileage varies. Multiple people have reported having problems here on GAF, and on Twitter there are still thousands of reports of issues with XBL.

Is Live ok now? I'm opening an X1 and need to be online to do the initial setup

There is no way of knowing unless you try, unfortunately. People report varying degrees of success.

Give us a free game or extend our PSN+ membership for the time the PSN was down Sony. Choose one.

I'd take the latter, since most likely I'd already own whatever game would be given away. Now, if they could only offer one and not give us a choice of one or another, I'd want the former..

Ah ok gotcha

That would seriously be one of the worst things to happen on a military vessel...

Made for a decent* movie though:

*bad but watchable.

You'd take a trial's worth of a PS+ sub over a free game?

Yep, I would rather have nothing given away. Call me cynical but I think if companies start giving away shit every time a ddos happens it adds an incentive for these dorks to keep doing it.

I don't think they do owe us anything more than 2 PS+ days, but if they're offering then I'll gladly accept.

Thought about this earlier, definitely a possibility.

Still can't sign in on my PS4 but I did manage to access my SEN account on my PC and verify my email address.

This time yesterday it was the opposite situation.

Guess the hard reboot fixed my issue, able to get into XBL and onto FH2 now. Hooray! Now I can play for 20 minutes before I pass out, lol.

Now I'm signed out of the PSN app and can't get back in. And the maintenance message is replaced with connection to the server has been lost. I just want to make it online before Xur leaves the tower on Destiny damnit.

If drones in the battlefield and in the US can be infected with malware, you can bet there are some infected computers on those vessels.

Oh God can you picture hackers infecting drones just to disrupt people playing like CoD, just picturing it in my head is hilarious but that would still be one messed up thing to do. Literally doing a drone strike to cut off someone's connection
