Well psn was up last night for me. Played destiny till about 3 am and went to sleep after logging off.

Woke up in the morning due to family a few hours later. Psn back down. Wtf happened?

Agreed. From my admittedly limited knowledge of DDOS attacks it seems like there isn't much you can do about them. Sure you can mitigate some of the damage but there does not seem to be anything you can do to completely prevent them.

But hopefully its over.
 
I was finally able to log in this morning (Netherlands), I could download the LBP3 game I bought with my US account and I've played D3 online for quite some time without any problems (PAL account), seems to be resolved for me.

It was strange though that earlier today I could not see friends online who were signed in.
This seems resolved now also.

I don't see it that way. This doesn't happen if these antisocial assholes don't make it happen. My rage is directed at them.

I don't doubt that Sony is doing everything it can to get things back up and running... this attack is seriously hurting their bottom line and their brand.

Let's try a less inflammatory analogy: Say someone walks into your mother's house and trashes her kitchen, leaving smashed dishes everywhere, then pushes her down and takes off. You show up for dinner a few hours later. Do you yell at her for not being able to serve you food?

Microsoft was able to waste 2.5 billion on mojang just because they were bored of the daily grind of hookers and blow, Sony is struggling immensely with it's finances and as others have pointed out may have been subjected to the majority of the script kiddy attack.
 
I don't think fighting amongst ourselves and jumping on other people for apt yet slightly tasteless analogies is going to help anything...

I dont think "calm down" necessarily means that people shouldnt feel angry, at least in my opinion. To me, its more of a way to say that anger wont make any difference, then its up to the individuals to take that into account or not. But sure, its possible to ignore those posts as well and not quote them. That is also an option, indeed. By the way, i'm only referring to the calm down post, i dont know about the other posts.
 
Now I can't connect to the EA servers from my PS4.

All I wanted this holiday season gaming-wise was to play lots of BF4. I'm starting to feel that's simply not going to happen till after new years.

Blame? I don't blame them the attacks happened. I don't even blame them that they were down for a day.

But, two days? It's hard to not start raising an eyebrow. You're full of shit if you think there's nothing they can do about it for two full days other than pray to god that the cops find them or some such pipe dream.
 
The better analogy is two houses with families. House #1 and House #2. Professional burglars attempt to rob both houses and succeed. House #1 has better insurance. House #1's kids get their toys back quicker.
 
Regarding the rape analogy, it's obviously offensive because it is about rape and hackles are raised whenever the topic is mentioned, but it says nothing offensive about that act (on top of it just being offensive by itself). I don't get why people are freaking out about the analogy. Generally, it is right - A has been attacked by B and some people are losing their minds at A. Okay.

But, it misses the paid service aspect of the relationship. We paid the harmed party for services. We are A. We have paid B, the staff at a pizza counter (I bet you thought it was going to be prostitutes) for our slice of tasty 'zza. Suddenly C breaks into the kitchen and smashes up the joint and takes the cooked pizza and runs out. Obviously C is to blame.

However, if B is standing around looking at the wreckage and there is fresh pizza in the oven, they should get it for A. We have paid for it. That's the only interesting part of the story as far as I am concerned. Could Sony have done more for their customers following the event? If anyone has good information to that effect, that would be good to hear.

I would never yell at my mom. But if it was a 24 hour restaurant that I paid a yearly subscription to and they should reasonably expect to get robbed once in a while, especially when they were told a month in advance and their main competition had the same thing happen and re opened faster, yes I would be upset. Probably still wouldn't yell though
 
I guess my only question is the following; If these attacks are so easy to pull off, so difficult to defend against and are being done by people who's only motivation is to piss people off, why do they only occur once every couple months? If they truly get their jollies from fucking shit up, why don't they attack every day and keep things offline permanently?

Offline gaming seems fine certain games take longer to load if they are searching for a server... ie lbp3.

I think I read somewhere in this thread that they might've been renting the botnet they used for the attack, that's probably the limiting factor.

If every kid in his moms basement could bring down a whole billion dollar industry with a few clicks we'd be doomed and the gaming world would have died years ago. This is a major fuckup, Im pretty sure PS4/X1 were major gifts this year, and they simply dont work properly on christmas day and a few days after. Specially when most consoles come with a downloadable game, its essencially a 400$ paperweight.

Last years attack was a big fuckup, but I actually think this is far worse, this is probably the most important season for these industries.

My analogy (evidently lots of people here don't understand analogies) is about where the rage is directed. Should the kids in House #2 be pissed at their parents for having crappy insurance, or at the burglars?
