Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

I didn't expect much out of Jason but man did he sneak that one in.
Also goty cast is the only place I like Alex in, he always fights for the right games.
I can't believe that they didn't even mention Drivecult for best looking game.
Jeff said more than once that it looks uneven in spots.
but The Workplace is still my favourite skit

That D4 play after recap is totally unnecessary. That looks just like the quicklook they did back then.
Yeah, weird decission to play the exact same part that was in the Quick Look.

He has also said that the time when car games were the best looking ones is over. Something along the lines of "cars just look real now".

Did any of the guys outside of Alex and Patrick play D4? And did anyone see the first quick look outside of Vinny? It sure didn't seem like it. It almost felt like Alex was mainly showing it off for them.

I know Guilty Gear ended up winning the best looking vote, but does anyone else think it probably would of done so without any hassle if that game was a Street Fighter game that looked that good?

It'd be on the list from the get go but other than that I don't think it would make that much of a difference.

Definitely. SF is big enough that the likelyhood of them playing it or seeing someone playing it shoots through the roof compared with GG, where it sounds like some of them had to google it to even remember what it looked like.

How did Horizon 2 or DriveClub not even get mentioned? They put so much emphasis on art style and then Dragon Age is dismissed in two seconds. Destiny top 3 just tops it off. Utterly painful discussion.

I could swear they mentioned Horizon? I also don't get all the hate for Destiny's graphics. Its not the best in any particular area, but I do think that one of its strengths is that it manages to do everything well. That's not something I could say for Dragon Age, which has a lot of sloppy animations and graphical glitches.

I must have missed it, I skipped a few tidbits due to spoilers.

Is there just a big archive of Giant Bomb gifs somewhere?

Also, is there a music playlist of stuff like Lockdown or the Theme From Black Knight or other stuff that is kinda musically associated with GB?

'cop show' and 'hunked for life' had little to do with video games. I WONDER WHY THEY EVEN DID THEM.

those two are funny though. the workplace was the only one i didn't like, because although they managed to get the style down, there weren't good jokes within that. that i remember.

I love the art in Destiny. I'm not a fan of the game, but think it deserves a nod for that.

I actually thought that one worked the best, because it played off the existing office atmosphere and personalities

I miss that twitter account that was endlessly tweeting out GB sitcom episodes based on whatever had happened that week

Very cool seeing Guilty Gear get that recognition even without initially being on the short list.

A well deserved win for sure.

I don't get why Destiny being a runner up for VotY is so controversial here. If Destiny did anything right for me, the vistas were freaking beautiful. Looking out over the city with the traveler in the distance had me thinking I was going to really enjoy this game. I was wrong and ended up not liking the game at all, but it was good looking.

I would have probably put Driveclub in over it, but with Jeff poisoning the entire staff with his hate, it was NEVER going to happen.

So much of Destiny is just the most generic shit. It's the most high-res version yet of the same artistic concepts every uninspired science fiction piece draws upon.

I think it's the same reason DriveClub didn't get brought up. A shinier version of the same thing isn't as memorable as a moderately less shiny version of a new idea.

Exactly. Dan was trying to argue for best graphics technical. Destiny is not that at all or arty. The game looks great but its not anyhting more than whats come before.

They literally said like 5 times during deliberations that the category is not best graphics.

I don't like fighting games (only because I suck at them) and I don't like anime but I think they made a great choice. GG looks like the modern evolution of the great fighting games on the Neo Geo like Samurai Shodown II or Garou: MotW.

Having watched the GG QL sure the game is gorgeous but mm, I dunno. I actually don't know what my answer for this category is.

Destiny is such a boring looking world, and I don't understand how brad got away with getting that on the list.

It is the most boring-possible sci-fi world. The races are "humans", "humans with blue-skin and anime hair" and "humanoid robots".that's, like, a cardinal sin in and of itself as far as interesting world design goes.

Really? The art design is one of the best things going for the game as far as the world itself goes. The first time I landed on any new planet I was blown away by how beautiful everything looked. Some of the interiors look amazing. Now as far as races go, yeah not that interesting. And unlike Jeff I actually don't think the endgame gear looks that cool or impressive. The game certainly has a distinctive overall design though and is really high quality, personal taste aside.

Discussing literally anything else about Destiny besides gunplay I think anyone would be more than justified for straight up tearing that game apart. But on the whole I think it is definitely one of the most impressive looking games to date.

So far people aren't quite freaking out over DriveClub not getting mentioned for best looking as much as they did in 2010 when God of War III didn't get mentioned for that category.

I think we're used to them having alarmingly large gaps in their videogame knowledge by now, even though there's more people on the staff than ever.

So Driveclub wasn't listed because of a lack of videogame knowledge by the staff of Giant Bomb. That's what you are saying? Amazing.

OR they don't think a better looking car game is anything to hoot and holler about.

Even tho that weather system is quite awesome.

DriveClub objectively deserves to be mentioned when it comes to best looking games of the year, just like GoW3 in 2010. No one else played it but Jeff so as a group they lack knowledge about it.

The only thing amazing here is how passive aggressive you're being.

Nothing has to objectively be mentioned, what the hell. It's Giant Bomb's GOTY awards. They pick what they want.

Yes, but that doesn't prevent them from potentially forgetting some things that could/should be mentioned. If Jason wasn't there, for example, Guilty Gear Xrd probably would not have made it into the conversation at all. The game that ended up taking the whole category wouldn't have even been discussed, because either they would have forgotten about it or most of them wouldn't have cared (just like reactions when it was initially brought up).
