Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

I could understand the argument for Neverending Nightmares and Guilty Gear both being in there. Just the combination plus Destiny on top makes it seem ultra weird.

I actually don't understand Never-ending Nightmares being in there. We've seen the black/white sketch thing done plenty of times before and the art itself is not well drawn or animated. Something like Child of Light is a much better "artsy" pick, imo.

So much of Destiny is just the most generic shit. It's the most high-res version yet of the same artistic concepts every uninspired science fiction piece draws upon.

I think it's the same reason DriveClub didn't get brought up. A shinier version of the same thing isn't as memorable as a moderately less shiny version of a new idea.

I could say the same about Guilty Gear Xrd and anime, but that doesn't take away how well that game works visually.

Not sure what makes people so insecure about Destiny that the very mention of it has to turn into these kind of discussions every single time. I can understand if it ends up in GB top 10 (it won't; anyone who listened to the podcast would know this given how they all initially reacted to the nomination), but visual department Destiny has plenty of highs to go on. As did a few games that were, IMO, quickly and unfairly snubbed.

I feel like the others could've torn down Guilty Gear pretty easily. The graphics tech is impressive but... One could easily make an argument against the overdesigned, anime-as-hell character designs, which is definitely a big factor in judging how the game looks.

...but the truth is that everyone at Giant Bomb are secret anime editors. They all love anime. Crunchy Roll, Polar Bear Cafe, and Akira have changed them forever.

It has a swimming mission. An escort mission. And a SWIMMING ESCORT MISSION!

You're also backtracking the whole time you're with Emma. It's the holy trinity of shitty game design in one single segment.

And yet you're still wrong, MGS2 is amazing. :)

Unity is spectacular in scope and in detail. I understand they instantly eliminated it for the unfortunate console performance, but on PC it is hands down one of the best looking games ever made.

Those screens are gorgeous, but I'm curious if anyone in the world is even playing the game at these downsampled resolutions cause that IQ is muh gawd.

To be fair, not much science fiction draws upon generic fantasy tropes. So, I guess putting demonic knights on the moon does make it sort of original.

A prototype version of Mario Party causing the apocalypse is probably on the top five for greatest/dumbest ideas Giant Bomb has ever done.

Well, the man's own words prove you wrong. I think he definitely has no interest in modern anime (except maybe Polar Bear Café) but he's stated before that there's some '80s and '90s he's into whenever that topic came up (don't remember the titles off-hand since Brad is also into shows of that era and I get them conflated).

I'm pretty sure Jeff legitimately hates anime.

Jeff also really likes some anime inspired video games such as Persona 4, Revengence, Money Puzzle Exchanger, etc..

For Maximum Vinny days

I kind of think his clonded versions are acting like placeholders for who were sitting in the spots. Jeff Wave, Brad sleepy, Dan Excited, Patrick alert/surprised by Dan's Excitement.

I don't want to get all mean and shit...but I and anyone with After Effects could have done a better job masking in DanVinny's arm in like three minutes.

Still, I never noticed at the time he was being each other person. That's awesome.

Jason's Guilty Gear mention definitely has the best effort/success ratio of any GOTYcast argument ever. Gotta admire that smoothness.

Eh, it goes by so quickly that they probably didn't bother.

Mario kart should have been on the list cause good god does it look and destiny look good but compared to other games looks alright.

Too true. Just seeing it GIF form irks me a bit. Nonetheless, I'm hella excited for tomorrow.

Also, it is very brief but those few frames of his Dan impression are really good.

I see Patricks list is up, but will the main guys have videos like years gone by? Does anyone know? I always like watching those.

Patrick is a main guy, but anyway, they did away with the video top 10s last year and they're not bringing them back for this year. Too much work.

Yeah, check the recap eps. Alex's pick was in recap 1.

Incorrect. The games looked at in the recap videos are the ones the community voted on (the voting took place on this page). Has nothing to do with the crew.

I think they said they weren't doing top 10 videos this year, because it took way too long to produce and dig up/film footage and put it all together.

the recap video was excellent, good work

what UPF was the Mount Your Friends video taken from?

I can't believe that they didn't even mention Drivecult for best looking game.

Jeff seems to be the only one who played it and he hates the physics for some reason. The more I play it the better they seem to me.

On top of that, Driveclub is definitely the best looking game I've ever played, period. I was blown away when it first came out but the weather update made my jaw drop like no other game has before. Photo-realism comes to mind.

Yep. The subject matter of Guilty Gear is average, but it's got a new idea in how they present it. The 3D models disguised as 2D drawings is an incredible trick.

I don't understand how a pool ball summoning assassin or blind man who fights with his shadow or woman with monster hair are average even in anime...gg is a unique and always has been

Question regarding Patrick's list - can Kentucky Route Zero really be considered as a top game of the year when out of the three acts released, only one of them came out in 2014?

Lots of publications put it on their list (specifically Act III, that is) despite including and prominently featuring the first two acts in their lists the year before.

I think in light of the unique quality of the three acts released thus far as well as the fact that GB did not consider it, at all, last year (and probably will continue to do so this year since it's technically not "complete", yet - bit of an archaic concept, mind) its inclusion on Patrick's list seens more than justified.

You could also put it like this: Act III is one of the best gaming experiences to be had this year and it's a new release.

I really liked the skit they have for the day 1 recap video. Anyone know any more good GB skits? I only been listening to the podcast and watching QLs for a while now.

That D4 game looks fucking bonkers.

Also, the name of the character .. isn't that the name they had for York before they changed how he looks etc ?

In terms of production value I think this is probably the best skit I've seen

but The Workplace is still my favourite skit

I can't remember if Drew heard the Colonel say "I need scissors" during his playthrough. He didn't understand the reference. :( I definitely heard it on mine so I got a kick out of that when Jeff mentioned it.

Shadow of Mordor will get GOTY, Destiny runner-up.

The main thing I've got out of the first podcast is that it's been a pretty bad year for games.

they recorded that MGS episode after the GOTY podcasts.

Podcast was recorded before the end of Metal Gear Scanlon 2 was recorded

That's right...

Also, I would kill for a MGS Retrospective with Dan, Drew, Brad, Jeff, and Patrick after they play through Phantom Pain. I have a newfound appreciation for the games and I would love to hear them expand on their feelings of the series as a whole.

How did Horizon 2 or DriveClub not even get mentioned? They put so much emphasis on art style and then Dragon Age is dismissed in two seconds. Destiny top 3 just tops it off. Utterly painful discussion.

I'm really glad Drew brought up how MGS2 has so much attention to detail in its gameplay systems and even in inconsequential easter eggs. MGS is known for its cutscenes but that's really the least interesting part of the game. Few devs put that much thought into player agency. It was pretty disappointing how they basically brushed it off as a waste of time.
