Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

Kinda sad that Patrick glosses over Danganronpa 2 as just a "parallel side story." The brilliance of DR2 is that it plays on your expectations coming from the first game and flips it all upside down.

But hey, I'm happy the series was brought up at all. Now I need to buy some hotdogs.

Still working through the first day's cast, but did they not even mention Infamous: Second Son? I remember all of them being really impressed with the graphics earlier this year. I can understand forgetting about the game because it was kind of boring and not noteworthy aside from its visuals, but to not even get a mention? Did I miss something?

You did. inFamous: Second Son was brought up for best graphics and best story.

why do people keep going to this trash website

Driveclub fans everywhere demand satisfaction.

Also (and I can't believe you didn't notice it before you posted) stuff like this:

At the part where Patrick is about to explain Danganronpa and I'm getting a sense of wahjah right now. I don't think explaining Danganronpa's story works for people without actually experiencing it. Without its proper context, aesthetic, music and everything, it probably just sounds like dumb, throw-away anime nonsense when the DR games have great stories. Weird comparison, but I'm actually reminded of when Guilty Gear was brought up yesterday, and it was dismissed until they actually experienced it through videos.

The premise (and promise) of DR1's story is great, the execution is near abysmal at spots. I'm surprised you, as an AA fan, weren't taken aback by the poor writing, aggravating characters and terrible pacing. If only the mystery of the investigations had made up for all that but they're so simplistic, a 6-year old could figure them out an hour before the actual resolution occured.

The only categories the game should ever be considered in is Best Looking Game and Best Soundtrack, imo.

Most disappointing discussion is so therapeutic. Man this year has had an unreasonable amount of disappointment.

Oh, there were definitely moments in the story that were lacking and, in the end, I think Ace Attorney is a superior series in terms of writing (and most else). However, I think I gave a pass to a lot of DR1's faults because of its novelty. It's a game that appeals to my tastes in all sorts of ways, and I think what the story nails shines brighter than what it fails at. Also, being an AA fan, the spin that DR has on investigations and the "courtroom" due to its setting were also engaging, and that lasted until the end.

I didn't really have a problem with its pacing, either. I can agree that, compared to Ace Attorney, resolving the murder mysteries was simpler because you're given essentially all of the tools and evidence you need before the trials, but that also gave it a different dynamic from Ace Attorney that I appreciated (since, in AA, moments when the protagonist is stuck are usually resolved through a new breakthrough rather than a new way of thinking). There were several twists that I didn't see coming, too.

Ha, and there was something appealing about the aggravating characters, in a weird way. They're a group that really doesn't get along with each other, and that raised the tension, suspicion and paranoia of the game's mood in appropriate ways.

Brad trying to argue for destiny is so cute.

Just saw that it was only a runner-up for most disappointing. I'm sure it's entirely on Brad that it didn't take it (as it should have). Looking forward to hearing the discussion that lead to Watch Dogs somehow trumping it.

Get ready to feel pretty silly in two hours then.

Could someone please tell me when the 'best story' category on the bombcast ends? Sorry if this question has been asked multiple times before, I don't want to read the thread and get spoiled on who the winners are.

I'm always ready to feel silly (as I just showed a few posts above)!

Now I'm really looking forward to hearing the discussion!

I wish I had gotten those things out of it. I found the trials to, again, be very interesting in concept but then you actually get to play them and have to deal with the stupidity of the characters (let me explain ten super simple things about the case to you before we get to the important questions, sure why not), with the hilariously ill-conceived minigames, as well as with some of the worst writing the game has to offer (ambiguities and poor wording left and right; maybe a flawed translation?).

Anyway, thanks for explaining your position. I still enjoyed the game on a moment-to-moment basis but I can't say I found it to be a good game overall.

Hey guys, I'm trying to figure out what games get spoiled in today's GOTY cast, and I don't feel safe combing through the thread yet.

Is there a list of what games get spoiled during the best story discussion? Would be much appreciated!

Good lord they outright hate DKTF's soundtrack. The fuck, man. :|

The Fall gets spoiled like completely. Valiant Hearts too, I think.

Those and Ground Zeroes are the only ones I can remember getting full-on spoiled. Saw Far Cry 4 mentioned somewhere, but we didn't get into any specifics with that at all.

Who is that BAKOON person that will have a top 10 on the site? I found the twitter account, but that didn't help.

I had no idea The Fall existed. And yet, I check my library and I own The Fall.

Installed now. Gotta give it a playthrough.

You sure you're sure?

The discussion justifies it well IMO. Wish people would listen to the podcast than just watching the recap.

Jeff "Crossy Road is better than Threes or Hearthstone".

Possibly the most ridiculous thing said in this GOTY deliberations.

What was the solitaire game that they mentioned during the best short time game category? I wasn't able to hear what they said clearly.

Guys. We could have had 5 quick looks of new games with Jeff and Vinny commentating and you guys vote for smash and D4 :(

Haven't watched the video yet, but learning, through this thread, that Smash was picked is disheartening. These seem like terrible choices, but I guess because of the nature of popular votes, only high profile games that the staff have likely looked at already will be chosen.
