LIZARD SQUAD is Back. Planning XBL Attack. "Biggest attack yet". [UP: XBL/PSN Down]

Given the holidays and the relative ease with which people can return things, I wonder whether these attacks will have an impact on Dec NPD and if so, what that may look like.

There's probably a fair share of people returning / swapping PS4 and X1's, potentially PC gaining the most from these events.

On the whole, probably not a material impact given the probable short-term nature, but still interesting to think about.

I don't think NPD tracks refunds and even if they did a few thousand people making returns isn't going affect a month where each console will move around a million units

ddos is not hacking. This is not the first time Sony has been ddosed. Blizzard and Steam have as well. Stop it with the false equivalence. If it comes out that there's more to this than what we know then we talk about consequences. Until then, it's pointless.

I understand the differences thank you. But I wasn't responding to you anyway so telling me what to do is pointless for you.

IIRC the first january after the Wii U came out there were a ton of returns that dropped the number of systems sold (lots of scalpers got burned).

Will there be return? Yeah, of course. Consumers return stuff all the time for all sorts of reasons. I don't think it will be like the Wii U returns though.

I can't imagine too many people swapping out a PS4 or an X1 for a PC over this. Not enough that it would make a noticable difference anyway.

Posted a bit about this in the Alien Isolation OT but the fact that my harddrive/save data has been corrupted as a result of these network outtages means these guys are more than just a nuisance and inconvenience, they can potentially damage these consoles.

PSN was not down last few days i was on played Destiny with friends, i think there was only issues getting logged in onto PSN but once you get on it works fine.

No. A currency only has a communal value. That's the way economics work. You can't "lie" with a currency. As such, the veracity of the currency DEPENDS on its decentralization. A service works conversely, where a product and service is developed, centralized, and presented for a value, not decentralized. There's no redundancy with authenticity or authorization as you have with a currency. It's kind of like the "you wouldn't STEAL a car"-commercial, where it should really say "you wouldn't DOWNLOAD a car". In currency standards, there is a communal need to uphold the veracity of the currency holders. In a service system, why not just give the product to everyone? Your product won't be worth less because of it.
I'm referring to EFT. Electronic funds transfer. It is a service.

blog update posted?

The video game industry has been experiencing high levels of traffic designed to disrupt connectivity and online gameplay. Multiple networks, including PSN, have been affected over the last 48 hours. PSN engineers are working hard to restore full network access and online gameplay as quickly as possible.
From time to time there may be disruptions in service due to surges in traffic, but our engineers will be working to restore service as quickly as possible.
If you received a PlayStation console over the holidays and have been unable to log onto the network, know that this problem is temporary and is not caused by your game console. We’ll continue to keep you posted on Twitter at @AskPlayStation and we’ll update this post once the problems subside.
Thanks again for your patience.

yup

"My anecdotal experience has convinced me, against all evidence to the contrary, that the world is, indeed, flat."

Ahh... I see the error of my ways now.

That's insane. Guess they can't really do anything to stop these attacks?

Nope its an inherent weakness in the TCP/IP protocol which was designed in the 70's when DDoS did not exist.

You can try to mitigate its affects but with the sheer size of some of the Botnets out there its always going to be a losing battle.

To those hoping for bodily harm to come to those responsible for this DDoS attack, seriously, how unimaginative...

A more fitting ending would be when these asshats get caught, they should be sent to work with the Amish for 10 years hard labor, no cell phones, no internet, no TV. And every week/month be made to write an apology letter to all, (individually) the Xbox Live and PSN engineers/tech service people who had their Christmas with there families taken from them, to try and fix the mess that they made.

honestly that would be nice but chances are that they are going to be offered a nice job by a nice big company and may face minor infractions for this

seriously though sony... its saturday... SATURDAY ... the one of the week right after christmas. its unreal that sony has such an incompetent team. Granted microsoft probably has the best team money can by but man MS dusted sony in this scenario

It was hit or miss for me. Managed to get online Thursday evening but Friday it was completely down on my end.

Lol Live is down right now.
None of these companies are immune to this.

Live is down for some mate.

This thing has done some damage for everyone, it also proves the for MS it simply isn't a case of "spinning up" more servers as they would have you believe.

Not sure if repost, this is a HUGE RUMOUR !

And at the same time the argument goes the other way. It's a two way street and the fact is when Sony was hacked years ago it felt a lot like this and nobody knew for days what happened. And here we are while there's no proof they were negligent there's also no proof that they weren't either the absence of proof isn't proof of absence. Copy and paste Twitter updates are a poor excuse for customer service and keeping your customers apprised of the situation. The longer it drags on without an official response from Sony the worse it looks even you know that. And I have no doubt Sony is checking and investigating if anything was taken or compromised but if it has and we find out again days later well that changes the complexion of this argument significantly. Thanks for your opinion.

Sorry but "the absence of proof isn't proof of absence" does not justify jumping to the conclusion that there has been negligence on the part of Sony. Even if it's discovered that there was an intrusion alongside the DDoS, that doesn't necessitate that the intrusion was the result of negligence. Lots of companies get DDoS'd and there's no intrusion. The same group that is claiming responsibility for this attack has also attack multiple game services previously including Arena Net and Blizzard amongst others and there has been no security compromise in those events.

The only thing that could result in compensation is negligence and there's no evidence of negligence. Demanding compensation without even knowing if there was negligence involved is not at all reasonable.

Managed to get the store to work (both UK web and console) and managed to start Battlefield downloading. Nothing seems to be wrong with the speed either.

Bullshit. They ain't giving anyone free anything for just a DDoS attack. The PSN Outage was a security issue, this ain't.

Has been posted before. Pretty sure the general consensus is that it's fake.
