Dark Souls 2 Director on future of series: Stuff planned that will blow your head off

What if Dark Souls turns out to be just like the Zelda series, where they try to top the one game (Dark Souls 1 vs. Ocarina of Time) that became a critically-acclaimed masterpiece? I'd be okay with that!

In that context, Dks 2 would be a Majora's Mask equivalent: highly polarizing at launch, but in the following years gaining more and more goodwill until it's seen as the actual masterpiece?

And Dark Souls 3 would be something fresh à la Wind Waker, which would make sense given Tanimura's words: "What we have on paper right now will blow your minds".

Dear god just let the Dark Souls IP die in peace :( It doesnt need a third game. It really doesnt. (if that's what they are talking about)

I think there is some potential for a 3rd DS game. For instance, if DS2 is set in a world where the player
prolonged the Age of Fire then DS3 could be set in a world where the player ushered in the Age of Dark

People act as if developers/directors are somehow incapable from improving from their past games.

Nobody does? People are just rightfully not super excited for another Tanimura Souls. The potential for improvement is certainly there, but at the end of the day it's still just potential.

Since Miyazaki won't come back to Dark Souls I hope the team behind DS2 improves on themselves and makes it better this time. And no downgrades please. Move on from last-gen hardware.

I find the term B-Team highly insulting especially given that DS2 wasn't a bad game or IMO even a bad souls game....

But oh well given that DS2 was a great game for me and most likely GOTY, I'm excited about what comes next.

Dark Souls 2 is great, it's not at the same level of the first one but still is one of the best games this year/gen. Can't wait for the third installment of the series and i don't care if the so called "B-team" (insulting term IMO) is behind it.

I agree. I like the series, but I would like From to try something different (more different than what Bloodborne is and multi platform preferably) . The series doesn't need to die (why should it?), but I'd rather not get Dark Souls III anytime soon. We got three Souls games in the past generation, after all.

That said, it is obvious they are gonna to release Dark Souls III and maybe even IV and V, after all, the Souls games sell well. Also, yeah, the "B-team" thing is insulting and should definitely be dropped. Dark Souls II is a tad inferior to Dark Souls, but offending the team who developed the game is extremely childish.

Dudes, that term isn't in any way insulting. I heard it being used for many other studios. That's the way it is.
It's not the original team. It's the second theam that attempted a Souls game, hence B-Team.

A-Team and B-Team is being used for Naughty Dog, it's being used for Insomniac and I never heard anyone complain about that.
You guys get way too offended by this trivial name choice.

If there's a third game I hope to god they return to coherent world design and no universal fast travel. those things pretty much nearly ruined the game.

Problem is people have the mindset that A > B. And some people do use "B-Team" as a way to say the team is inferior.

The problem is dismissing the idea of a Dark Souls III if it is made by the B-Team instead of the A-Team.

Some people here act like Dark Souls II was bad (being inferior than Demon's and Dark doesn't equal bad) and the team behind it shouldn't touch the series again.
This. A sci-fi horror Dark Souls?
Oh man, that is my dream. Sci-fi settings are totally my thing.

Although it's still viewed as a good game it's generally regarded as not living quite up to the original. So I can see why people use it that way.

Nothing wrong about it.

The return of Kings Field but with the Dark Souls mythos? Not sure how i feel about this. I liked more of the somber feel of Kings Field where Dark Souls scews on the side of horror.

We can finally have the liquid monsters they always wanted. Getting devoured by a giant slime filled with blood death and filth would fit right in with the souls games.

Majority of the people who refers to them as the B-team are doing it as a mockery so what do you expect the response would be?

Doesn't change the fact that the term in is now use with the intent to mock.

There are a lot of people who still push the idea that Dark Souls 2's Team is inferior. I believe staying on PS3 and 360 really limited what they could do with the game, at the very least they couldn't get away with showing off higher spec visuals that wasn't optimized for the last gen systems. The DLC showed of they can put grandeur on display if they get the idea and have the time for it.

Oh God the humanity! They made a game that was only great and not a masterpiece like the previous two! Please don't touch the series ever again!

The three DLCs were DkS1-level good, btw, so i'd say we're for a treat for the future entries.

People hating on Dark Souls 2 still is just funny at this point. You'd think From Software made a Assassin's Creed sequel-tier game or something.

They is like people hating on Skyward Sword too me. I just write off the hyperbolic complaints.
Sounds great, really liked Dark Souls 2.

lol@hitbox complaints, played on PC never ran into any problem like that. Sounds horrible?
I am not a Dark Souls II hater by any means, but the game definitely had some hit box issues, at least with the bosses. That Rat Authority boss is a good example, I think.

And yeah, I played it on PC as well.

Well, I can't wait. Hopefully DS3 supports >60 FPS on PC :P

Yeah, you can discuss whether DS2 or DS1 is better (I prefer DS2), but the hyperbolic hate on DS2 (on GAF especially), which is widely considered one of the best games of the year, is just ridiculous.

Preach it brother.

Just give us back the old lighting and geometry in scholar of the first sin and I'll happily buy whatever Dark Souls 3 is.

But no seriously, I'm very excited. The Dark Souls 2 team showed some real improvement with the DLC and I can't wait to see them put the lessons they learned to another game. Virtual reality will work great with From's talented art direction.

I have absolutely zero interest in VR, so that aspect doesn't excite me, but I would accept another Dark Souls game with wide open arms.

Also, the hate on DS2 is hilarious. The game was great. All the souls games are excellent.

DS2 ending implied to me that story wise it wouldn't make sense to do a DS3.
The player is not even given a choice like he/she was in DS1.

I wouldn't mind to do another cycle though :)

I think DS2 is inferior to the first game and its plot (while fine on its own) ruins the ambiguity of the original game's ending.

Since the first game is one of my favorite games of all time, that makes DS2 merely excellent and one of my favorite games of 2014.

I've read speculation on Japanese forums that DS2 development was a disaster and From had to bring in Tanimura to salvage it. No idea if this is true but there were definitely issues with the engine that Shibuya created. It's pretty clear that the game came out 6 months after they initially wanted it to and it was still rushed. Seems they had to scrap a lot of stuff. With this in mind and the quality of the DLC, I think Tanimura can do a good job. Plus he can learn from the successes/failures of Bloodborne. I just hope we get more interesting NPCs in DS3...

Eh, I'll take DS3 over no DS3, I enjoyed DS2, probably my goty if I had to pick one, but it was no DS1 imo.

No I played it on PC and some of the hitboxes were fucked up.

I never noticed that problem in DS1, but that might have just been ignorance. But the gap between me playing 1 and 2 was very small (2 was gifted to on release and I played and completed 1 this january) and I still noticed how much worse they were on 2.

Dark Souls 2.75

Enhanced re-re-release of DS2

Bonus bosses: Fight 3 Velstadts at once. Final boss is an endless series of exploding mummies on a narrow bridge.

New "Mysterious" alternate ending: Player crosses legs on Throne of Want, laces fingers, and laughs evilly as camera fades to black

It was Myazaki who first talked about making Dark Souls "acessible", i don't think people should worship him as if he had nothing to do with the production of DSII.

Wouldnt surprise me if its true. Game feels really rushed
